Hi Phillippe

Snap!  It was a nearby lightning strike that took out my iMac ethernet port and 
destroyed the netgear modem router in December 2012.   I have underground 
power.  TV and Mac were the only casualties, both with minor injuries. The TV 
aerial was the probable local focus as I had an EyeTV USB device connected to 
the iMac.

 Hope your visit to MacWorx will be satisfactory.

Many thanks for your quick replies and advices. 

I forgot to mentioned that two things happened lately which could explain the 
loss of the Ethernet port:

Due to a lightning strike very close to my house I lost my internet connection, 
which eventually turned out that my Modem/Router (Telstra’s) lost its internet 
function, as confirmed by the NBN Technician who came to investigate. I 
fortunately had a spare modem/router and the internet and home phone were back 
in action. 
There was a Security Update on 16 Nov 2018 to Version 10.13.6, and shortly 
after the update the Ethernet connection stopped working. 
So, I do not know if it was the close lightning strike which did some damage, 
although the computer is connected to a Belkin UPS/Surge protector, or the 
Security Update did upset the Ethernet port somehow. 

I have reset the SMC as suggested by Ronni and Daniel, unfortunately with no 
success. I am now looking closely at Alan’s email to see if I can further 
confirm that the Ethernet port is damaged. 

Many thanks to everyone for the advices. I will be paying a visit to MacWorx 
for a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor and also ask them to check the iMac.

If no success with the SMC reset, then yes it could be a hardware problem with 
the Ethernet port.
Realistically as it’s on the mother board you wouldn’t want to repair it I’m 
afraid, as the board is very expensive. You better option would be a 
Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter if you still needed Ethernet, as it would be 
way cheaper!
MacWorx Joondalup are still great for hardware checks/repairs. And they’d have 
the adapter in stock should you decide to use that option.

Non functioning of the Ethernet port - iMac Mid 2014

Dear WAMUG’ers, 

The Ethernet port of my iMac 21.5”, Mid 2014 , 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 and 9GB 
1600 MHz DDR3 seems to have gone South. The iMac is running High Sierra 
10.13.6. 

I have checked Network Utility which indicates that the Ethernet is ‘Not 
Connected’ and have done the usual checks of swapping cables, using a brand new 
one, swapping the port on my modem/router, reset the NVRAM. All to no avail. 

Does this mean the iMac needs to go to the hospital and see a specialist? And 
which hospital is the recommended one? Can the Ethernet port be replace or is 
this hard-wired to the mother board?

Please note that the Wi-Fi works and I can keep working on the iMac, but 
knowing something is not right is the proverbial thorn in my foot and I need to 
have it fixed. 

Any advice you can give me will be gratefully accepted and tried.
