Hi,

I have a potentially silly question but will an iPhone bought in the US work
happily here in Aus?

Are there any issues getting it connected to the evil Big T's network?

Spare parts machine for grabs

2010-11-30 Thread Aurora74

Hi Guys,

I have a machine that is perfect for spare parts that is free for anyone that
wants it.

It is a 14inch ibook G4 minus HD. It is in a few pieces from getting the HD out
but it is all there in working order. logic card is suss though but battery is
good, screen excellent.

Drop me a line if anyone is interested. It is a take all proposition but i will

Re: MacBook Air vs MacBook pro

2010-11-09 Thread Aurora74

Yep the second ed. Can't see the new one being a radical departure but I am
fully prepared to be pleasantly surprised. I was talking to a guy at Apple a
few months ago and he expected them to be killed off so who knows. Wouldn't
have thought the Servers would be discontinued either.

I expect I will have a couple of the Airs to wrestle with before long :) does
anyone have a firm date of when they are due to be avail in Aus?

I would recommend one for light users. Mail, internet and watching the odd
movie and photos. Heavy or power users I wouldn't like to support.

Still would rather wrestle with an Apple than tangle with a PC.

Re: MacBook Air vs MacBook pro

2010-11-08 Thread Aurora74

Hi,

We have a couple and the revB was not terribly robust. They suffer badly from
heat stress and should not be used as a desktop replacement. Scuff badly.

Motherboard and logic boards replaced on both and there is a lifetime
replacement on the screen hinges which are prone to shattering which I have not
had an issue with so far.

The iPad has replaced them for the hardcore vanilla business travellers in our
group.

Connecting to a 3G card is a pain as the slot requires an extender cable. At
least they have given an extra USB slot on the new one. Remote DVD share has
been disappointingly slow. I have cloned my install discs to USB keys which
works well.

Start up/shut down is great. Super light in luggage. Keyboard is fab. New
trackpad will be awesome with this format.

Overall they are lovely but I would recommend the Pro over them anyday.

Apple Mail and 10.6.4

2010-09-28 Thread Aurora74

Hi,

I have upgraded to 10.6.4 from 10.5.8 to get away from Entourage and it seems
that Apple Mail does not want to play ball.

On the mail startup screen it does not resolve past the "looking for mail
servers" message on the front screen. when you cancel this screen I find that I
cannot quit Apple Mail as that option is greyed out. The only wayto close is
Force Quit.

Repair permissions did not resolve the error.

Any suggestions? I cannot locate a stand alone installer for mail. should I
reapply the 10.6.4 combo update?

It worked without issue on the other machine.

HELP...please?

Re: iPad problem

2010-08-27 Thread Aurora74
There is a small inital update for this when the ipad is first connected to
iTunes with the sims loaded. If not this can be invoked later if required.

I have had this happen on an ipad where Telstra did not process the sim
registration correctly.

It was a happy camper in no time

I suggest connecting it to iTunes and doing a full restore, then just try

Hi All,

My main usb key has corrupted. This is very vexing but i thought i could use it

The weird thing is, I can find lots of PC ones but haven't tripped over any Mac

Can anyone suggest their favourites?

Unfortunately this is not the case. It is a humorously titled document titled

Also the file only appears on the one machine in entourage. It doesn't come

Entourage attachment issue

2010-07-25 Thread Aurora74

Hi,

I have a weird one I am hoping people can help me with.

I have a mysterious attachment appearing in entourage.

A person sent me the attachment some time ago and I had deleted the email. Now
whenever they send me a new email this phantom attaches itself to the email. It
also appears to be a link/placeholder as the attachment won't open.

I have searched the drive and it does not appear anywhere.

Can anyone advise how to get it to disappear? I have checked the email in
Outlook and it does not occur there.

Ipad app help

2010-06-16 Thread Aurora74

Hi,

I have an ipad question for the list please.

I have a number of saved HTML and TXT pages that I would like to transfer
and read on my ipad. What is the best way to go about this? Drop box and
another app?

Also what would people recommend as MUST HAVE apps for the ipad?

Cleaning question

2010-03-06 Thread Aurora74

Hi Guys,

I have a white ibook G4 and the keys and surrounds are quite grubby.

What would you recommend to clean surface without removing the lettering on
the keys or discolouring the surface further?

Re: Entourage fun

2010-03-06 Thread Aurora74

Hi,

Just adding my experiences

I am running a couple of Mac Airs in and Exchange 2007 environment using
Entourage.

Most of the issues have occurred either after an Office Upgrade
(unauthorised by the users Computer Wiz son-in-law) and an Exchange 2007
Service Pack upgrade (evil things to attachment sizes).

There have been teething issues and Key Chain is def the cause of lots of
it. Calendar seems to be the most buggy feature resulting in the most
support calls.

Most annoyingly is that the errors haven't happed to all the machines. I
love that uniqueness about Mac's :)

Hopefully the new Outlook Mac client will solve all the issues but who
knows.

PS Thanks for the extra keychain troubleshooting tips :)

Serious White Hat Question

2010-02-26 Thread Aurora74

Hi Guys,

I have a friend who is a professional While Hat needing to look at the
Healthy Option (Apple a day).

They need apps that mimic the following in the Mac

SysTracer, Fiddler, Wireshark, Netmon

systracer takes a system snapshot of the windows registry, files and
folders. you can take multiple snapshots and compare any two that you wish.
and the results are color coded depending on whether something is added,
deleted, or changed

re systracer ... reports can be exported in html and viewed in a web browser

nd the captures can be imported into systracer on another PC for close
examination

Fiddler captures all HTTP and HTTPS traffic (reducing the signal to noise
ratio of products like wireshark) and can decrypt SSL traffic

Wireshark and Netmon capture network traffic

Any suggestions?

Strange Power Behaviour

2010-02-19 Thread Aurora74

Hi Guys,

I have a G4 ibook running 10.5.5 that has started behaving a little oddly in
some power situations.

If I unplug the machine from mains it has started shutting down requiring
the removal of the battery and the power button press before it will turn
back on.

BUT..

If I put it to sleep and then unplug from mains it is happy.

Also if it has woken from sleep it is happy to run on battery.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of this?

I will probably have to buy a new machine before tax time but I was
wondering if the little fella may be on the way out.

I am worried that it will just fritz as I have heard that there are model
shortages in some models plus I am so lazy it takes me about 6 weeks to
transition machines.

Thank you for any assistance.

SOE style backup

2009-07-05 Thread Aurora74

Hi List,

I want to create an SOE style backup of my machine - so not just the OS and
those settings (hopefully all the network settings and locations) but those
of all the applications as well.

So if I have to restore it is all in the one box so to speak.

What do people recommend for this? Do I need to boot from the system CD's to
perform the complete backup or will files be locked and not included?

The last time I did this was under OS9 and the world has changed much since
then.

PDF Writers - tricky request

2009-06-10 Thread Aurora74
Hi Good people,

I have a requirement where I need to setup a pdf writer to output to a
specific folder.

The tricky part is that I need to pair pdf writers to folders. It is my
intent to then automate emailing the resultant pdf's to defined addresses
(one for each folder)

Document A - PDFwriter A - Folder A - Email A
Document B - PDFwriter B - Folder B - Email B

I have the initial document generation and the emailing part all sussed. It
is just the PDFwriter setup and spool file direction that I am having issues
with.

Can anyone suggest an appropriate PDF product for this purpose? This also
needs to occur with no operator input required.

Non routable address help

2009-04-26 Thread Aurora74

Hi to all the network gurus out there

I have another tricky request up my sleeve.

I need to install MSN Messenger for Mac (Corporate Config) on my MBA. Like
everything it works happily on guest networks but not the work network.

I seems the Windows boys had issues as the Corporate Config is based at
another company. It seems they had to install ISA Firewall client locally as
the Messenger is a non-routable network address for us. Using the local
client allowed them to reroute the required addy through the ISA Server.

My question is - how do I do this on the MAC as there is no ISA Firewall
client for MAC.

I know the apples are smart enough to do this but my knowledge doesn't
extend this far.

Can anyone please help as I can't let the windows guys win.

Hi Rob,

Thankyyou for the suggestions.

The weird thing is that it worked fine on 10.5.5 - it was cooked by 10.5.6
but I can't figure out what was cooked.

Network ports are usual - proxy is using 8080 for HTTP so that is normal.
IPv4 is being used. MTU is probably not involved as it is behaving the same
in wired connections (blasted thing).

What I can't make sense of is why Entourage is failing to connect as well.
It makes me think something might have gone wrong with the bind but I can
still connect to the AD network.

For all I know the apparent proxy issues maybe a red herring.

It is looking increasingly like I need to clean install the machine.

I just hate admitting defeat - I usually reserve that for Windows.

Continuing request for help

2009-04-15 Thread Aurora74
Help!

I have managed to take my machine back to 10.5.5 from 10.5.6 via an Archive
and Install (maybe not a good choice) but I still cannot get the internet or
email from the AD network at work.

I can get the internet via external wifi networks BUT I still cannot connect
to the net when I am on the network

I can connect to the network, connect to windows shares and access programs
via green screen.

The network gurus at work can see my proxy authentication (does appear to
drop in and out) but I still can't get to the net.

Can anyone please offer any suggestions. I am all out of ideas. This machine
has been a nightmare since I got it (a MBA revision 2 that had the mainboard
replaced in the first month)

The other MBA on our network is running 10.5.5 (never touched 10.5.6) and
hasn't missed a beat.

Thanks

Firewall Issues

2009-04-11 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I have a bit of an issue that I was hoping this list may help me solve.

I have a MBA was upgraded to 10.5.6 - there the issue starts.

The machine is connected to an AD network and this is still working
correctly.

The issue is that I can no longer access the network or receive email whilst
connected to the AD network. I can however browse to all of the network
shares and ping my little heart out over the network. This occurring both
wired and unwired.

I have no trouble getting to the internet from various wireless networks
(but not the work one)

I originally upgraded using the combo update but have tried again using the
full update from Apple. I have also repaired permissions.

Looking at the Firewall logs I have noticed that the issue appears to stem
from here. Trying various choices on the Application firewall does not
correct the issue but I have seen mention of the ipfw.

This I know nothing about this and was wondering if anyone could offer any
further suggestions for my troubleshooting and resolution.

Smiles and thanks

Hi,

Oh that does sound nasty. I will keep an eye out for this with the Air's -
personally I have been very unimpressed with the battery charging.

I also found a solution for my networking issue over at the Princeton IT
dept.

Locations How could I forget.

I have set one up for each type of connection and they are working
beautifully. A bit of work for the main user but I am sure he will get use
to this in time. I hold out hope that 10.6 will solve all the wacky
networking issues that clog the lists.

They now have the following locations.
1) Work Ethernet
2) Work Wireless
3) Work Guest Wireless
4) Home Wireless

Hi,

I found this yesterday and it it working a treat. I have a happy CEO now :)

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

The Sierra site was definitely more helpful than the Telstra site as they
refer to a different maker.

MacBook Air - Leopard and an AD network

2008-12-12 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I have two of the brand new MacBook Airs on our internal network. They are
running 10.5.5 and are bounnd via AD to the 2003 network.

What I am having issues with is the machines seemingly not retaining a
default list of network connections and their preferred orders.

They are configured to join both the Ethernet and the Corp Wireless network
- wireless preferred (A). The issue occurs if I flip across to another
wireless network (B). Unless I disconnect from this network and move to a
preferred one before shutting down, it is trying to connect to the B
connection on startup and ignoring the Corp Wireless and ethernet on
restart/relogging in. It is then forcing (popups without the saved info)
reauthentication to the corp wireless even though all the settings appear to
have been saved and have been triple checked by our Networking guru

There is a separate issue where Aiport is constantly scanning and turning
itself off/on - I have applied the latest EFI firmware for the Airport but
this continues.

Can anyone help me please?

Telstra Turbo Series 7 USB Modem

2008-12-12 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I am trying to get this to work with a MacBook Air (super new one) and it is
running 10.5.5. It keeps disconnecting and I get Kernel panics (always
welcome on a machine that the CEO gets on Monday).

Is there some sort of trick to getting this to work?

I am being a ittle lazy but it has been a very big week to make the macs
work happily with our Microsoft or Die network.

I have been having networking issues with the MBA's but I am not sure this
is Leopard or AD but will the subject of my next email.

Cognos and the Mac

2008-12-12 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with Cognos Powerplay/Browser Views and the
Mac? I have seen that it is compatible with Firefox but am a little hazy on
the details as the URL's all end in .exe on the PC.

Can anyone please advise?

Hi,

Thought I would let everyone know that the solution seems to have been
reverting to the previous version of Firefox.

Kernel Panics and Aiport

2008-10-06 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I have started getting Kernel Panics relating to my Airport Card (according
to the log)

I have had a look at the card and it all LOOKS GOOD but who knows.

I have zapped the PRAM to get it backup and running but I have had 5 since
Friday.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I am running OS10.3.9 on a ibook G4
133Mhz. The only software updated/installed is the latest Firefox update.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

October 14th Rumours

2008-09-17 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I have heard that there is going to be a strong possibility that Apple will
announce hardware upgrades on the 14th October.

Can anyone confirm or deny these reports as I need to by a few machines and
don't want to get caught short particularly with the MacBook Air with its
old processor.

Please contact me off list if you feel more comfortable.

10.3.9 upgrade help please

2008-08-05 Thread Aurora74
Hi,

I need to upgrade from my incredibly stable 10.3.9 to a later version due to
my ipod mini finally kicking the bucket.

It is loaded on a iBook G4 133MHz with Max Ram - PowerPC Chip.

It has fairly standard software with the only specials being Entourage and
the MS Suite - that is the only serious backup requirement.

What would people suggest I upgrade to and how to backup my current machine?
Do I need to do a clean install or is a direct upgrade possible?
