Thank you to Douglas Sheerer who sent me a 1Password licence. As a
result I now have one to give away if anyone would like it.

Re: Set Top Box updates

2005-05-05 Thread Keith Feltham
Thanks to everyone for your replies on the STB issue. As usual, what
I'd like to buy and what the budget will allow don't quite coincide!
But you've given me plenty to think about. Thank you.

Set Top Box updates

2005-05-04 Thread Keith Feltham
Our family are considering purchasing a Set Top Box in an attempt to
improve the fringe-signal ghosting and snow that currently
constitutes our TV picture.

Most models advertise that they can be firmware updated for increased
functionality, and they all say the same thing: Just download the
.exe file, connect the RS232 to your computer's COM 1 port ...
[Sigh]

The joys of 2% market share. So how is everyone else dealing with this?

Thanks.

One really cool feature is dictionary as standard, highlight word
then command + control + D and their ya go.

Where ya go? To the New Oxford American Dictionary? Or is Tiger
outside the U.S. fitted with a dictionary that can properly spell?

Dual 2GHz G5 10.3.8

My G5 seems to behave very odd at startup - it boots, loads and the
desktop pictures appear.

I then get the pizza wheel of death for a considerable period of
time (2-3 minutes +) before all the icons appear and I can get down
to business.

Try deleting fontTablesAnnex. I read somewhere that update 10.3.6
introduced a new version of ATS framework (v1.8.5) that fixed some
font bugs and introduced a new one. If you have a heap of PostScript
fonts in your System, they are each scanned at login and it may be
that each scan adds to and bloats the fontTablesAnnex cache. It is
hoped Update 10.3.9, due 'real soon now', will include ATS.framework
1.8.6 which might fix this.

~/System/Library/Caches/fontTablesAnnex

No guarantees. I'm just passing on what I read somewhere.

OK, if that's true, why is the Mac market in Australia smaller than
that of European countries with populations approximately equal to
Australia's?

Overpricing here? Incompetent marketing? Insufficient retailer
margins? All of these things? If so, the blame can be placed squarely
at the door of Apple Australia.

Or are there other factors causing Apple to have so few customers in
Australia that we are marginalised almost to irrelevance in the
general market?

OS X shutdown

2002-08-16 Thread Keith Feltham
When I shutdown the B/W G3 from OS X it makes an unpleasant popping
sound, followed by a whine that lasts for about four seconds. This is
exactly what happens when Western Power treats me to one of their
splendid and frequent power cuts. It is as if (wild guess here) OS X
cuts the power before the HD heads are parked. Doesn't happen from
System 9.

Anyone else get this?
