If it is an Ethernet Network that you can't connect the iMac to:

Is the Ethernet LED light Showing on the Port that the iMac is connected

If the LED light is NOT showing when the iMac is connected, but does show

If you're sure all cables are all working, then you can try resetting
 Network.
To do this, you do the following:-

Go to Macintosh HD - Library - Preferences.
FInd a folder called System Preferences.

well first find - its not there...

Drag this off to the desktop (for save keeping incase you need to put it
back if it doesn't work). It will copy it to the Desktop (depending on your
 OSX version).
(Note: If the folder is only copied to the Desktop, then you'll need to
move the one in the Preferences folder into the Trash.)
 Restart.
Then see if Ethernet is showing up in System Preferences. Ensure the cable
 does click into the Port.

You may need to reset other Networking settings by removing the file.

I have found that can fix it on some machines.
 See how that goes.

 Kind regards

If you're sure all cables are all working, then you can try
 resetting
  Network.
To do this, you do the following:-

Go to Macintosh HD - Library - Preferences.
FInd a folder called System Preferences.

well first find - its not there...

Drag this off to the desktop (for save keeping incase you need to
 put
  it

 on
  your
  OSX version).
(Note: If the folder is only copied to the Desktop, then you'll
 need to
move the one in the Preferences folder into the Trash.)
  Restart.
Then see if Ethernet is showing up in System Preferences. Ensure the
  cable
  does click into the Port.

You may need to reset other Networking settings by removing the
 file.

I have found that can fix it on some machines.

Re: Lost connection

2012-05-19 Thread Tom Hogarth
Ronnie , Daniel - *thanks for all your help* - I had been very very
reluctant to jiggle the connection lest i break something

well a few wminutes ago i got a connection green light and all - so
obviousl it was hadware after all - problem is i dont really
want to jam something else in there to hold it for the green light and
connection...

daniel is it expensive to get a new input plug? (or one from a demolished

Had a few jobs where it just wash't sitting right. You can also try
jiggling the cable slightly to see if it makes a connection.

The other thing you can try is it to set Ethernet Network manually adding
in your IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router address.
e.g. if you use a Netgear Router is 192.168.0.1, Subnet is normally
255.255.255.0 and pick a higher IP address that other devices aren't using
 e.g. 192.168.0.50
Click OK and see if it gets a green dot for Ethernet and then internet
 works.

 Could try a PRAM reset anyway,..never hurts,..lol.

And when you moved the folder to the desktop (SystemConfiguration) it
definitely moved it and didn't just make a copy of it (and left it there in
 Library/Preferences folder).

If you're sure all cables are all working, then you can try

To do this, you do the following:-

Go to Macintosh HD - Library - Preferences.

  Restart.
Then see if Ethernet is showing up in System Preferences.
 Ensure

The Ethernet port is generally soldered to the Motherboard/Logicboard, so
not something easily replaced. You'd probably find it cheaper/easier to add
a wireless card to it (depending on which mode), or set up wireless for it,
if you're finding the Ethernet port is flakey,….
Might just be worth trying another cable, slight angle on it, or something
like that to see if it holds on Ethernet.

I am completely stumped why it is refusing to acknowledge - i have

 Hi Juliet,

Firstly, Pages is not the best Application for really large documents.

Are you using Pages’09 (version 4.1)? Are you using Snow Leopard?

 If you are using Pages’09:

A pages document is an archive - unfortunately in the latest version
(iwork09) it is not signed as such anymore, the trick is to rename the file
to.zip and unpack the zip file.
Then it is possible to see if the “index.xml is there, or if it is renamed
to something different such as index-new.xml or “index.xml.gz
(the name of course will appear without quotation marks).

 1. Press the [control] key and click on the ‘bad’ Pages file.

 2. Scroll to ‘Get Info’ and select it
In the ‘Name Extension’ box, delete the .pages extension so that
 myfilename.pages reads “myfilename.zip”
You will receive a message window “Are you sure you want to change the
 extension from “.pages” to “.zip”?
 Select ‘Use .zip”
(Don’t worry we’ll put the extension back to “.pages” when we are done.

 3. The file will now display as a folder containing multiple files, on your
desktop (if that is where you selected to save the file)

 4. Open the Folder and inside will be all the files contained within the
 Pages document.
Scroll down and see if “index.xml” is there, or one named as I mentioned
 above. (without quotation marks)

 5. If the file is named “index-new.xml” or “index.xml.gz”, change the
 extension to .xml

 6. Then change the Name on the Folder back to the original by adding the
 extension “.pages” (without the quotations)
You will receive the message window: “Are you sure you want to add the
extension “.pages” to the end of the name”
 Select “Add”

 7. Your pages document should now show as your Pages document icon again.

 8. Double click it and see if it opens in Pages Application now.

 Ronni

Your other option is to contact the iTunes Store Support Team at this
 linkhttp://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html?form=videotopic=Video%20Purchasessubtopic=TV%20Showsand
  explain your problem.
Ask them to delete the unwanted shows from your download queue.
It has to be done from their end.
You'll get an automated email at first, but a real person will email you
 within 24 hours.

If you have problem files, locate where they are on your computer and
 delete them from there.
Cmd-Shift-R will pop you right to it in the Finder.
 Older versions used Cmd-R.

 Hi All,

I'm thinking of creating some custom ringtones from my music library -
assume self-imported, non-DRM protected tracks - preferably suitable for
both mp3 AAC, though I have lots of both and can convert (so not a deal
 breaker).

I know there are numerous ways out there to do this but, before embarking
 on
the Google/trial error route, I thought I would ask what methods/software
 WAMUG list members use/prefer - pros/cons reasons would be a bonus ;o)

 Hi Neil,

How I did my Good Old Collingwood Forever Theme Song as a Ringtone for my
iPhone 3G S … if you want a copy of the ringtone I can send to you ;-))

*To create custom ringtones using only iTunes:*
 *
 * 1. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and
 select “Get Info.”

 2. Go to the options tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time”
check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to
 start/stop.
The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you’re done.

 3. Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection
to AAC.” The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times
determined (If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and
reads “Convert Selection to MP3″ (or some other format); go to iTunes
Preferences Advanced Importing and change the “Import Using” drop down
 menu to “AAC Encoder”).

4.After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music
folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on
your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you
iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it
 from iTunes).

 5. Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose
 “Get info.”
Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a
to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop)

 6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add
it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section.
Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!

*Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop
times for the original version of your song.*
 *
 *
 Cheers,
 Ronni

never succesffuly carried out the smc firmware update (862 kb) that
hangs around in the software update page - I'm wondering whether the
two issues might be linked ?
If possible - I might need an offline conversation (with any willing
participant) as there might be other pre-existing conditions inspired
by the initial transfer of some things from the old G3 600 mhz to the
Intel on startup.

thanks in advance to anyone with any ideas - on wamug or offline

Re: Intel rebooting

2006-10-26 Thread Tom Hogarth
Fellow wamuggers - it appears that the fault lies in a faulty install
disk. Interesting time on the phone with the Apple people - because it
is over 90 days etc.

Oh well, nothing like long phonecalls to resolve nothing!

Friday blues in q

2006-06-16 Thread tom hogarth

Greetings weekend wamuggers, I have a new intel imac
with 10.4.6 that does not under any circumstances want
to type a capital q (ie shift q) under any
circumstances. Stumped as to know what to do, as there
are a few items I need a capital q in. (in mail and
browsers)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: National Australia Bank

Yes - NAB does warn about these, and tells you to
ignore and do not respond to them at all, as
no bank would send emails such as that anyway!

  Cheers, Tom

  I dont bank with National.

I do bank with the National and they do not contact
 clients via
email. They will send requests or information via
 their web-site
notice board, once you have logged into their online
 banking site you
 have access to it.

It is a phishing email, simple way to deal with them
 is to mark as
SPAM and hopefully your email client or server will
 filter it
accordingly, preventing others to filter through.
 Also if you feel so
annoyed by such an email you can contact the bank
 via their addresses
on National Bank web site. Not much they can do
 about it except warn
 customers.

 Cheers!

Re: Microsoft updates??? further thoughts for punters

2003-09-20 Thread tom hogarth

Peder, Kevin et al,

Unsolicted patches for a start sounds v fishy.
Having never registered with them for anything,
as with others.

What caught my eye in the text of the message
I did open was (a) singaporean english usage
(b) text with not a logo or brand line that
you would expect

Oh well another one!

Yes, Kevin,

 were deleted ... No harm
 done to the Mac :)
