Doh! Thanks guys. That's it. I forgot that I'd changed this for easier
access to Spaces (F8).

Problem solved.

I've reset the PMU - didn't fix it.

Try it while holding down the "fn" key at the lower left.

If that works, then open System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse
and then uncheck the "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function
keys" option on the Keyboard tab.

Have fun,
Shay

Hello Steven,

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse - Keyboard

Do you have ticked ‘Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys’

If you do, you have to press Fn to get hardware functions (e.g. you
have to press Fn+F1 to decrease brightness, Fn+F2 to increase
brightness).

You could try checking your keyboard shortcuts under the system
preferences and also check to see if there are any applications that
use those hotkeys for some other function.

Hope this helps
Ruben

F1 F2 brightness control - stopped working on MacBook Pro

I have a 17" Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro running latest OS.
