Select your language first, then select "Disk Utility" from the Installer MENU
(which is at the top of the screen …).

You didn't followed the 'detailed Instructions' precisely ;-)

You must be very careful not to go too far into the installer application when
you boot from the Install DVD. Note that Ronni pointed out that you must NOT
click the Continue button in the first screen of the Installer (step 2 in her
notes). Keep your eye on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. When the
Installer menu first appears, that's when you will have access to Disk Utility.
If you click Continue again, you'll go too far.

Yes, this process could have been better designed, and if remember correctly it
actually has been improved in the Snow Leopard Installer.

Hi Ronda. Thanks for your very detailed response. I tried the
installer as you suggested but there is no sign of 'Disk Utility' on
the instal disk at the
stage you mention. So I installed 10.5 from the original disk anyway
and archived the existing OS. It has allowed me to upgrade to 10.5.8
so at the

very least the upgrade is working.
But I will try again. Once I have chosen the language, it goes direct
to choose options etc, ie erase and instal, or archive and instal etc,
so there is

no info on Disk Utility?

This is with the two instal disks that came with the MacPro. Am I
missing something?

Thanks again
Kind regards
Jon

3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon
to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

5. Select your Mac OS X volume (sub-entry below the drive entry).
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If Disk Utility reports any errors have been fixed, then re-run
Repair Disk until no errors are reported.

B) Then click on Repair Permissions.

C).Then Download the Combo Update from here:

and try to install.

D) If you can install it, Repair Permissions again, this time from
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

E) Run Software Update and install any updates.

If you cannot install the Combo Update after doing A and B.
Start into Safe Mode.
By holding down the Shift key from the moment you hear the startup
"bong" to the moment the "spinning gear" appears.

Expect this startup to take longer than usual.
Don't be alarmed if the fans whirl loudly during the "spinning gear"
display.

Eventually you will be presented with the Safe Boot login screen.
Log in as the administrator and reattempt the Combo update.

Remember to avoid performing any other processes while the Mac OS X
10.5.8 update is taking place in order to lessen the chances of this
issue.
