Motorola - Re: Mobile phone for 10.4?

Anyone like to share experiences with Motorola phones and iSync, or
how they find the user interface?

The Motorola v620 seems to be pretty good ...

Mobile phone for 10.4?

2005-05-30 Thread Toby Oldham

Hi all I'm hunting for a new phone. Had a look at the Apple website,
which gave me a list to look at, and a cool little table at the
bottom which describes which brands offer the best compatibility -
they are:

- Nokia '60' series
- Panasonic '60' series
- Sony Ericsson P800, P900 and P910 series phones

I've been using a Sony Ericsson T68i up until this point (interface
bugs me sometimes) ... anyone have any recommendations and/or
observations on the phones grouped above?

My criteria are that the phone be compatible with OS 10.4, not be too
big, have a functional interface (both the operating system and
physical form) e.g. buttons made for medium sized fingers, have
bluetooth, and have a decent standby time.

Before you say anything Shay, I accept that I'll only get the
proverbial 'two out of three' criteria met in a single product. :)

Never hurts to list them all though - 'gives you options.

Cheers,
Tobes.

Hey Tobes,

I'm on the hunt for a new phone too. I'm leaning towards the k750i
when it comes out, but not too sure of iSync compatibility. I
currently have a Nokia 3650, which syncs well, but doesn't
communicate all that well with Address Book ie loses bluetooth
contact with Address book (still connected to the OS though), when it
is connected, doesn't report incoming calls or SMS messages. I have
tried everything to get it to work propoerly, but to no avail.
Hopefully that has been fixed with later model Nokia's.

Personally I'd steer clear of anything that's not a Nokia,
Sony-Ericsson or Motorola, as they're the ones with the most
experience building mobile phones.

I've found the Sony-Ericsson T610 series to be quite good (BlueTooth
Syncing), aside from an annoying and totally unnecessary tendency to
run out of addressbook/SMS message space.

I'll second that.

The T630 is what I had (lost it on Friday) but when I get a new one I
still have all my calendar, address book and bits and pieces backed up
on my computer. So now I'm the hunt too, unfortunately.

Now I'm really glad I went for it, otherwise I'd have lost everything.
When I checked Nokia weren't compatible with Mac at all. At the time
Sony Ericsson were the only Blue Tooth phones I could find that were
Mac compatible.

However, I'll also agree that it runs out of SMS memory too quickly, I
haven't had a problem with the address book space though.

I'm having a good run with my SE P910. It's the second one I've had. The
first only lasted a day or two. Just wouldn't pair a fault with the phone,
but I received a replacement quick smart.

I can say that it scores 3 out of 3 regarding your requirements. But it
fails most people's 4th, that being price. A bit too pricey (I managed to do
a special deal). Other than that, it's a great phone. The reception is way
better than the P800. Opens pdf's and spreadsheets quite well. The camera
is, well, OK. Good for taking rough pics of equipment at auctions to show
the chef before you start bidding on it the next day, or how the new
cheeseboard looks as a guide to staff, but not much good for anything else.

It doesn't look very cool unless you're the type that's impressed by the
sunglasses they sell in Memphis.

The flip down keyboard is a joke but the HW recognition is OK although not
as good as Newton ‹ nothing is yet (had to put that in :-).

But the main thing is that it works perfectly in 10.4 (downloads a little
program to the phone initially), and you'll be able to easily sync
Addressbook iCal by bluetooth.

From what I have been told by others on this list, the K750i is the
700 on steroids :-) Better camera, battery life and the opportunity
to have up to 2Gig storage space. For me, that could *almost*
eliminate carrying around an iPod Mini and my 2 Megapixel Canon IXUS
camera (although the shots from that camera a great!). If anything,
I can go out and still listen to music or take the odd photo. My
3650 fits that bill now, but it has a VGA standard camera with no
flash. Once I know when the K750i is out (2 weeks according to the
sales chicky at Telstra Booragoon), the 3650 will be up for sale or
on ebay.

On another side note, those who are on contract with Telstra and are
only a month out from finishing, be very aware when Telstra call.
They come across all nice and offer to lower your monthly bill
because you are not spending enough to warrant the higher contract.
I thought, wow, they really are listening to the market. No. When
they lower your monthly bill they also lock you in for another year.
It wasn't a call to be nice, caring company. It was a call to make
sure you don't jump ship to a better deal!

I'd like to throw my 2 cents in.

I've been using a Z1010 from 3 for a while now. The Bluetooth works
perfectly, iSync loves it, I can connect to 3's data services at
insane speeds (for a mobile) using Internet Connect and the Sony
Ericsson 3G modem scripts.

The Z800i is pretty much exactly the phone but tuned up with improved
features.
