Re: My Card Reader won't read a San Disk
Dear WAMUG'ers, Again, many thanks to all who gave me suggestions. I have tried most of those and finally someone lent me a SanDisk ImageMate reader ($49), and this reader mounted the 512MB SD (SanDisk) card immediately. I was able to download the photos and delete them from the disk. So it looks like somehow the 'Transcend' reader was having problem in reading the 512MB card. Although it has read Sony's chewing-gum Stick, and smaller sized SD cards - 128MB, 32MB without any problems, maybe it was not able to read the larger SD cards. The Transcend card would have been the first or among the 1st generation of USB2 card reader, so maybe the technology has since improved beyond its capabilities. Anyway, problem solved. Just thought you may wish to know the outcome. I will be trying some of them and see if I can get the card reader to mount the SanDisk somehow. Or I may look at a Firewire reader if things get out of hand. Howdy Philippe, On 22/11/2005, at 5:04 AM, you wrote in the WAMUG Mailing List digest: So it looks like I'll have to buy a memory card from another manufacturer, but which one? I regret I've no idea about new stuff. My P&S toy is 6yo with the original 10Meg card. It looks like you will have to approach this by eliminating one component at a time. For my own example with the CF card (SanDisk), while I couldn't mount the card using a SanDisk reader, I had no problem mounting it using an el-cheapo pocket reader. But then I didn't have any possible USB1/USB2 complications, because I plug the reader directly into the Mac's USB2 port. Perhaps your retailer is prepared to let you take a reader and a card on spec for trying out combinations? I used to be able to find pc retailers who'd let me try memory sticks and all kinds of pc cards before I made final decisions. If your problem remains, this is a UK photography forum with Mac users that my nephew recommends. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1017. It's pretty busy, so your question might get looked at soon. I hope your Westnet experience will be as good as mine continues to be. And I don't even get paid to do this ad. amicalement, Nancy M

I have today taken the SanDisk to the shop where I bought the camera, and he tried it in a Win laptop without any problems at all !!! I just could not tell the guy I have a Mac. So it looks like I'll have to buy a memory card from another manufacturer, but which one? Regards, Philippe PS I'm definitely going with Westnet for broadband. Made up my mind this past week-end.

My Card Reader won't read a San Disk
Dear WAMUG'ers, I use a SanDisk 512MB (SD Card) in my Lumix LZ30, which seems to works OK in the camera, however I just cannot read the card when inserted in my Transcend' card reader connected to my G5 1.8Mhz dual, running OS X 3.3.9. The card reader is connected to a USB 2.0 powered hub. I have used Disk Utility to try to mount the SD disk on the desktop, but nothing happened. I also tried to reformat the card but Disk Utility bombed with the dreaded beach-ball. Disk Utility was able to detect the Card, its size etc, but was unable to mount it on the desktop. The strange thing is that the card reader will 'mount' the original Panasonic SD16MB card, provided with the camera, and other SD cards as used in my daughter's Kodak cameras, and recently cards from other cameras - Nikon & Canon. Using the USB cable, I was able to download the photos directly from the camera/SD 512MB card. Is the memory card faulty, although when in the camera it is working perfectly? I am somewhat tempted to return the card to the supplier, but want to be sure of my facts before doing so. Any ideas please? Many thanks, Philippe PS I would strongly recommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ30 to anyone who wants a good digital camera, but not prepared to jump to an SLR. The lenses in the camera are just wonderful.
