Most new HP Ink Jets have a new contact system which "damages" the cartridge
(the claim the new system gives better print head holder to print head
contact. But this limits the amount of time the cartridge can be taken out
and put back in (not good if you swap between colour and large black and
photo etc)

I have a 5400C and only have one grip (could be my firmware revision) when
running on USB (both in winblows 2k and FreeBSD) the first scan is great,
does not take long once the lamp warms up, but subsiquent scans it sits for
around 2 -4 minutes before proceding to scan. I prefer the older scanners,
but the ones after the 5400C may have fixed this issue.

I loved HP a long time ago, I am just retiring a HP 4L (due to a bad memory
module and old age (it is ~ 10 years old and has done over well over 900,000
pages which is good going by todays laser printers standards))

Unfortunately I have no direct experiance with Epson, I do know that for a
while they beat Canon and HP hands down on photo images (no one else cam
close) but things have probably changed.

Regards,

Kat.

Printers & scanners

2002-07-31 Thread John Currie
G'day all
A friend is seeking my advice on purchasing a printer and scanner
He has looked at the following Budget for two items around $800
he has iMac with 8.6

HP Desksjet 948C Printer
HP Scanjet 5400C

Epsom Printer Photo 810
Epson Scanners 1600 Perfection

Anybody care to advance an opinion on relative merits
I understand the Epson Printer has some potential problem because of
circuitry built into the print head rather than the cartridge . Is this a
real problem?

TIA
John
