RE: ipad and tethering
Thanks, but it appears from the research that I have done on the web that to use an ipad connected to a phone service for data, you must buy the sim enabled ipad or jailbreak your iphone? There is no way to use the iphone like you can with a laptop? Is this correct? Re: ipad and tethering
Hi Hugh, I would not recommend jail breaking to anyone. Turning your iPhone (or 3G enabled iPad) into a hotspot will be a standard feature of the soon to be released iOS 4.3. See, for instance, the Personal Hotspot section of this article: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/13/first_look_new_sms_alert_settings_multitouch_ipad_gestures_in_apples_ios_4_3.html I will be trying the feature over the next few days and I will let the group know how it goes. Re: ipad and tethering
Hi Hugh, Just a final update on this question. I just completed a quick test on the Personal Hotspot feature of the upcoming iOS 4.3. It turns out that the personal hotspot works via Bluetooth. In the test I connected an iPad and a MacBook Pro to the Internet using a hotspot set up from an iPhone. Here is what I did: 1) Wifi on the iPad and MacBook were turned off to ensure that the connection would be solely via the hotspot. 2) I turned on the Personal Hotspot feature in the Settings app of the iPhone. 3) In the Settings app of the iPad, I turned on Bluetooth and selected the network name of the iPhone. I was prompted to pair to the iPhone and had to confirm on both the iPhone and iPad. 4) I did a similar thing in the Bluetooth settings of the MacBook Pro. And that's it! The iPhone displayed a blue flashing title bar indicating that I was operating the hotspot. Internet performance on the iPad and MacBook Pro was quite slow and web page loading was very ordinary, but this would depend on the signal strength of the iPhone as it does when one is browsing the web on the iPhone itself. I checked my email and ran the iPad weather app to get the forecast just for the fun of it. Overall, I think the feature is most useful. I always have my iPhone with me and have quite a generous data plan. I have always been able to tether my MacBook Pro, but now I will also be able to tether my iPad without the need of a separate 3G data plan. A quick check of my Vodafone account showed no extra charge as yet.
