Update:

VPC 6.1 has now appeared on the Apple Oz site:

Bare VPC 6.1 - AUD $299
VPC 6.1 + WinXP Home - AUD $449
VPC 6.1 + WinXP Pro- AUD $499

Compared with US price/AUD equiv(@65c/$)/AU%premium

Bare VPC 6.1 - US$129/AUD$198/+50%
VPC 6.1 + WinXP Home - US$219/AUD$337/+33%
VPC 6.1 + WinXP Pro- US$249/AUD$383/+30%

I guess the 30% to 50% premium is what we've come to expect for US/AU price
comparisons. Of more interest at the moment, Peder Kristensen pointed out to
me that:

> Microsoft now have three versions of the
> Office:Mac - Academic, Standard and a Professional version. The Professional
> version includes VPC 6.1

On checking at the MS US Mac site, sure enough:

Office Academic - US$149/AUD$229 equiv
Office Standard - US$399/AUD$613 equiv
Office Std (upgrade)- US$239/AUD$367 equiv
Office Professional - US$499/AUD$767 equiv
Office Pro (upgrade)- US$329/AUD$506 equiv

and Office pro does, indeed include VPC6.1 + WinXP Pro

This seems to be a significant saving
(US$149 on item total of US$(249+399=648)

Unfortunately, I can't see an equivalent on the Apple Oz site and, in fact,
Office OSX alone is listed at AUD $999 ($619 upgrade).

So - to get the equivalent functionality to the new Office pro
(US$499/AUD$767 equiv) here would be $499+$999=$1498 (ie ~ 95% more)

One would hope that the equivalent product would be offered here? Hopefully
at less than AUD$1000 (or 30% above US price equivalent) anybody out there
heard anything confirming/denying this?

Also, is it possible to buy the US product and will it work OK with Oz
systems.

Cheers

Neil

So both the MS & Apple US sites show VPC 6.1 c/w Windows XP Pro now for sale
at US249 (equivalent to AUD$383 at US65c/AUD) - but none of them show how to
buy from Australia (its not shown at the Australia Apple store)

Anybody know:

1) Is this version available here yet
2) What is the local Austalian price
3) Given recent reported imcompatabilities between Oz/US software/systems,
is VPC sold in different US/Oz versions

TIA

From Macintouch 13.8.03

Mark Dickelman forwarded an update on Virtual PC from Connectix Corp.,
as Microsoft completes its takeover:

As part of the Microsoft acquisition of the Virtual PC and Virtual
Server technology and products, Connectix is in the final stages of
transitioning the business to Microsoft, and plans to complete this
transition by August 15, 2003. After August 15, Microsoft will
oversee all future Virtual PC and Virtual Server product
   development, sales and support.

Virtual PC for Windows: August 15th is the last day customers can
purchase Virtual PC for Windows from Connectix. If you are
interested in purchasing additional licenses, please contact your
Connectix Account Manager or visit [Connectix Shop
]. Microsoft is developing a new
version of Virtual PC for Windows, which will be available in Q4
2003. Once this version is available, existing Virtual PC for
Windows customers can upgrade at no cost. Microsoft will be posting
a FAQ that addresses questions about product plans and support at
   [Microsoft Virtual PC ]. This
FAQ will be available as of August 15, 2003.

Virtual PC for Mac: On August 12, 2003 Microsoft will launch Virtual
PC for Mac - 6.1, which will available through most major retailers.
Customers who have Connectix Virtual PC for Mac 6.0 can get a free
update to Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 6.1 at [Microsoft Macintosh
   ]. Customers who have Connectix
Virtual PC for Mac 5.0 are eligible for the upgrade pricing.

Virtual Server: Microsoft is approaching final stages of development
with plans to ship Virtual Server in Q1 2004. If you would like to
participate in the Virtual Server Customer Preview, you can find
