TimeMachine
Good Afternoon all and a happy new year, For some strange reason I am unable to enter TimeMachine, I can open the disk up and everything is in order and it is backing up as it should but when I select Enter TimeMachine in the menu bar nothing happens, Strangely enough my younger brother rang to tell me he has the same problem. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what the problem could be please? Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
Further update, The solution to the problem was to locate the offending Aperture library double click it while holding down the Option and Command keys this brings up the maintenance options, select Repair Permissions (which signalled "Changing ownership to current owner") then running the Repair Database and finally Rebuild Database and everything was fully restored. Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
What is different with this one file then Adrian … does it have the same permissions on it as the other files? TM stores the permissions for each file separately; and puts those special "deny everybody everything" permissions on the actual backups partly to prevent one user from accessing another user's backups, but also to keep us mere mortals from changing things. The unique and complex structure of TM backups has the enormous advantage that it can do quick "incremental" backups of only the things that changed, but each backup is, in effect, a full backup of your entire system. Any changes to that structure not made by TM can hopelessly corrupt the backups. Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
Up-date on recovery process, The Titanium idea didn't work, it came up with an error (forgot to note it) soon after starting. The file I want is the only one giving me a hard time as I am able to restore any others. I created a new user account and switched to it, I then mounted another external disk and copied the offending Aperture Library from the TimeMachine to it (which is progressing ever so slowly), I expect I will eventually be able to copy it to my normal user account. Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
Sorry Ronni, I thought I had it but not so. So back to your suggestion; TimeMachine has been running since Snow Leopard and 10.6.3 was released. I was trying to get a version back from earlier today due to a stupid mistake of copying 1 picture without realising that every picture in the library was selected and it had made hundreds of copies before I realised what was happening. I will try the Titanium solution next thanks. You could try this: Use Toast Titanium to create a Disc Image of your Aperture Library from within your Time Machine Backup. Then 'Mount' the Disc Image to your Desktop and drag the file to your Pictures folder where Aperture expects to see it. Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
Aperture is NOT running is it Adrian? Apple recommend not to perform a backup or restore with Aperture Open. Had you backed up Aperture Library in OS X 10.5.8 to Time Machine & then continued to backup in Snow Leopard? You definitely have the same Username 'short name' , etc., in the Snow Leopard as you had in Leopard? "To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder. If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both." Re: restoring items from TimeMachine
Adrian Do you have something with the same name in the location that you are restoring to? If so, try moving that to a different location (or renaming it - don't delete it!) and then try the restore again. If you are still having no luck, just manually drag and drop the folder/file you want to restore from the Time Machine drive to the location on you drive where you want it. Also, make sure Aperture isn't running while restoring from backup. Good luck! Patrick Lawrence. It keeps a record (and a physical copy) of every file you've created or modified since you started using it, so naturally it does keep a "backup" copy of your files. Have a look at Tri-Backup, an excellent shareware backup utility which gives a very clear explanation of all the schemes it supports. There are many others. PS My Boss wants to buy Toshiba 160 GB and/or 320 GB USB powered tiny drives for our laptop kids. She's got a very good price on them. The down side is a review I read said they write very slowly. Does anyone actually own one and can comment? I can't comment on the Toshiba, but I can't imagine it would be any different from my 160Gb WD Passport. Being a 2.5" drive, it is relative slow (5400 rpm). Add to this the fact that it does not have Firewire (being USB 2.0 only), and yes, it is slower than it's larger 3.5" cousins. I use it mostly on my Macbook Pro for holding my iTunes and iPhoto libraries so I don't have to clutter up the computer's hard drive any more than it is. As such. it performs very well. I wouldn't use it for movie editing or as a backup for HUGE amounts of data (it shows its limitations with multi-gigabyte files), but for every-day use it performs extremely well. The "mirror" backup, for example is almost the complete opposite of the "incremental" backup scheme used by Time Machine in that only those files which were created or modified since the last backup are copied. The original copies on the backup device are replaced, thereby greatly prolonging the storage life of the drive, but of course this approach is useless from an archiving point of view. Timemachine question
Hi WAMUGers Can TimeMachine keep working when the backup HD is full ie does it overwrite old backups with new backups?
