Using iPhone Overseas
Dear WAMUGersPlease can you help?I have applied to Telstra have International Roaming switched on.I can see that the call rates are maybe 3 or 4 times higher.What about data?Is data just data - doesn't matter where you are? I have a $10 data pack which i NEVER get close to using up.Will it be the same in Malaysia? Or will that be 4 times as expensive? Or will data not work at all?taBlitto Rod Blitvich-Amy Sam’s Dad. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0409 681 256 rb...@iinet.net.auhttp://web.me.com/blittoI don't have a big ego, I'm way too cool for that. --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: Using iPhone Overseas
Hi Rod,I understand that the rate depends on the service provider you happen to be hooked up to at the time. This can vary. You have the option with the iPhone to lock onto one particular provide or automatically connect to the strongest signal. The data will be charged by the service provider over there, I doubt it will come out of your allocated $10 data pack.I have found that most places you stay at now-a-days has WiFi and you can connect on to these either cheaply or free. Rod, you are most likely better off buying data off your hotel's wireless network - I'm on the 3 network, and it was going to cost a bomb to use that due to the call costs. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
I used mine in the UK last year for calls and data, until Optus phoned me. My data had run up the bill into 4 digits and was $40/Mb. None of it was included in my Aus contract ($49 cap plan). Last time I went to UK I bought a Tesco sim and it worked fine in my iPhone after a call to their support line. Good deals like pay Ten Pounds and get 20 Pounds worth of credit free (I think they said Unlimited Data but they have a fair use policy and the small print says 100Mb max per week) Hope this helps. Check the small print on the Telstra contract or call them for data rates overseas. Andrew On 23/06/2010, at 5:24 PM, Rod Blitvich wrote: Dear WAMUGers Please can you help? Not sure for all countries but I'm currently in New Zealand. Basically just bought a local pre-paid sim with data. I did the same on a US visit. Just need an unlocked phone. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
I highly recommend turning Data Roaming off to avoid the annoying $400 data bill. I just turned it on when I found myself needing to use Maps or look up timetables etc. then turned it straight off again. If you're going to be over there for a while it may be worth sourcing a local data provider's SIM. Have fun, Shay On 23/06/2010 5:24 PM, Rod Blitvich wrote: Dear WAMUGers Please can you help? Re: Using iPhone Overseas
To give you an idea of cost... less than 3 mins in the UK whilst roaming cost $25 (run as a test for work). Best bet is either, as others have suggested, get a local SIM in the country you are traveling to or talk to your mobile provider before you go to see what other options there might be. RE: Using iPhone Overseas
Rod, you mentioned Malaysia specifically, I always turn of data roaming when I am in K.L. and use the multitude of free wi fi spots, they can be found in a lot of cafe's, pub's and hotel lobbys ( you sometimes have to be a bit cheeky and say you are a guest/meeting a guest and just need the password for the free wifi in the lobby!). Malaysia generally is pretty good for internet access in hotels. You will notice you bill go up even for calls as well if you are a heavy user of the phone for standard call and txt with Telstra, as their roaming charges can be quite high on some plans. I have used prepaid sim's in k.l. as well, but gave up as I wanted people to be able to call my number in australia and not give them an new number for each country. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
I'd suggest you do the alternate sim card bit. Just back from the States my provider 3 network screwed it up when I asked them to turn International roaming OFF, they made sure it was turned ON. Thinking it was off I used the phone to look at sites etc ran up a bill of nearly $400, thinking I was in a Wi Fi situation, which i was most of the time. I had a discussion with 3 they have dropped the charges. Buy a Skype unlimited plan call people at home or in the office for free from a Wi Fi area, mobiles are not free but they're a lower rate, I think it cost me about $9 for a 15 - 20 minute conversation. International roaming is Expensive! Best, Ken On 23/06/2010, at 5:48 PM, Andrew wrote: I used mine in the UK last year for calls and data, until Optus phoned me.
