Re: Will new 8Mb iinet plans work with my netgear?

2005-03-04 Thread Christof S.
Hey all,

I realise that it's not customary to respond to one's own queries, but I
think this will be relevant to many WAMUG users:
My Wireless ADSL Modem Gateway is in fact an ADSL modem (according to
Netgear's Tech Support person it is capable of a maximum speed of 2Mb/s)
with ethernet router and WAP (802.11b). The tech support people at Netgear
and iinet expressed reservations about using this set up with a new
broadband2 plan, they indicated it may be incompatible and would definitely
under-perform. Despite their vague foreboding comments I decided to upgrade
my plan and have consistently achieved speeds well in excess of 3Mb/s when
accessing international material (this is over the 802.11b network) and
downloaded a 461MB file from iinet's ftp at an average of 790KB/s (this was
done through the ethernet network). It seems the only limit to my download
speeds are those artificially imposed by iinet's software (ensuring I don't
get above the 8Mb/s). I live about 2km my local phone exchange.

That doesn't make much sense ... I wouldn't be surprised if the netgear
support person just got it wrong. It should be capped at _either_
1.5Mbit (G.lite support only) or 8Mbit (G.DMT) but I can't really
understand how it could be limited to 2Mbit except by something like a
CPU so slow it could only route 2Mbit/s.

Of course, I'm certainly no expert with this stuff.

Given that for the last 6 weeks WestNet have been having a hard time
keeping the DSL service from going down several times a day, I'm finding
those new iiNet services are looking more and more attractive every
day...

I'm on iiNets broadband 2, my connection is approximately 4mb - I get
downloads of 430kb/s regularly. I'm about 2km from the exchange.

The largest quicktime movie trailers come down faster than real time.

And all this for $39.95 a month :-)

Mind you, that is only from the Akamai server at iiNet or other services
located at iinet. Outside of that, we have to wait for the rest of the
world to catch up ;-) Granted, it makes Software Update run veeerrryyy
quickly! I recently did the 10.3.8 combo update - 100Mb in less than 5
minutes :-)

Has anyone tried out video iChat with a local iiNet user yet?

I've been doing some research for modem.routers that will support
coming adsl2 and 2+

I'm not sure if this is of any help but here goes anyway.

Here's a link for your device. I believe the 824M is not upgradeable I

Billion 74022 yr warranty ADSL speed 8mbps to 30 with
ADSL2+ $190-250

Personally I wouldn't worry about ADSL2+ compatibility.
You have to remember that these speeds are limited by the ability of
your phone line. The ISP can offer the speeds but your phone line may
not be able to support speeds that high.
I know I'm very close to the exchange in my area so my speeds should be
relatively high.
I'm getting 2000k on iinet's 8000k plan so there is no way ADSL2+ is
going to have any benefit to me.

I would suggest there are a lot of issues to be resolved before this
performs

like we would like it to .
The chances of getting a copper circuit that would handle that speed

If it's to work a whole new approach will need to be taken ... Optic
fibre perhaps .
but why should Telstra or anybody else rush out and instal this while
the ACCC are

price fixing the returns .

Already we see that private enterprise does not want to expend much on
any Dslams

at exchanges .
it's much less risky to just let Telstra be the bunny and then complain
like mad

as though they are charging too much.

So by the time this gets OFF THE GROUND a whole new lot of Modems
and connect boxes are likely to be on the market with a lot of new
technolgy .

Unless you have to change , or have money burning a hole in your pocket
I suggest you wait for at least 12 months
and 2 years would be an even better time line.

Well, you could hope that the government sells off what's left of
Telstra but keeps the copper and exchanges and then charges all the
Telcos to run services over the government infrastructure. It seems
to work for roads...

As to whether we'll see that happen...

Have fun,
