That would be Michael Scriven and to my knowledge he is still alive and kicking
working at a university near Los Angeles. :-)

He used to spend 6 months lecturing at UWA and 6 months at UC Berkley every
year and would bring back the latest Mac news and gossip straight from the
famous Berkley Mac Users Group (BMUG) and Silicon Valley. In the days before
the web (and wide email usage) he was a font of info for all of us early Mac
users and if I recall correctly one of the instigators of UWA getting some of
the first Mac 128Ks in 1984.

I was vice president of the University Macintosh User Club at UWA, a
short-lived student guild affiliate of WAMUG at the time and early WAMUG
committee member so his titbits were very much appreciated for our WAMUG and
UMUC newsletters over quarter of a century ago (gasp!)

Ah memories.

Yes lots of us find them very useful and there has been much complaining

2008-02-27 Thread John & Julie Thompson

Hi Stephen,
I would suggest, if you are using only Word and Excel and not
relying heavily on macros, then iWork would be the better choice.
Pages and Numbers files can be directly exported as Word or Excel
files and you would not be cluttering your system with excessive
Microsoft garbage that is built into their software.

And yes, you are right Excel as part of Office 2008 does away with

However, when you install Office 2008 you can choose not to delete
Office

bit of a work around. Then you can run things with Macros into

A bit of a shame they did that, but that's what I've set up for

Hope that helps a little.

Well, for my part, I've had used Excel for more than 10 years now and I'm
familiar & happy with it (except for them killing off macros).

Also it is easy to say it reads/saves back to xls - so does apples Numbers -
however if I open one of my xls files in numbers, work on it and save back
to .xls then open it in excel it will look very different to the original!!

Also, does open office support all the excel macros/functions and how does
it handle the different versions of Excel.

I'm not saying that it WON'T do what I want - I just can't afford the time
to find out!!

Cheers

Re: Comment re Office 2008

2008-02-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Neil

Office 2004 runs under Leopard no problems at all. I run it on a current
iMac and MacBookPro with no issues.
And yes, you are right Excel as part of Office 2008 does away with Macros.
However, when you install Office 2008 you can choose not to delete Office
2004, so this leaves you with both. Not really a solution, but at least a
bit of a work around. Then you can run things with Macros into Excel 2004
and everything else into Excel/Office 2008. That way you don't lose it.
A bit of a shame they did that, but that's what I've set up for clients that
need both. Seems to be the only way to do it at the moment.

Hope that helps a little.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Looks good,

I just left a comment - then, cos I'm not sure how many members would go
check them out, I thought I'd post it! ..

One thing to shout about (and not in a good way!) is that in the new version
of Excel they have done away with macros.

I have several spreadsheets where I use macros - so if I were to update
these macros would stop working.

I have a LOT of time invested in various Excel spreadsheets that I use
constantly - so I cannot contemplate either updating Excel or changing to
Numbers (it doesn't handle Excel macros either).

The problem for me goes deeper than that - MS don't support Office/Excel
2004 for Leopard - so even though my new iMac came with a Leopard upgrade
disc, I'm still running Tiger - at the moment I'm up to my eyeballs in
accounts spreadsheets and I can't afford to find out the hard way any
incompatabilities between Excel 2004 & Leopard.

Bit of a bummer really :(

Cheers
