If that solves the screen flicker, you can probably change the background
back to what you had originally selected.

Ronni,

sorry I didn't let you (and others) know which suggestion finally fixed
the problem.

I had previously installed that firmware update and there are just a few
icons on the desktop.

I followed your last suggestion of having the desktop Sort by name and
Cleanup by name and all is well.

Cheers,

Kev

Hi Kevin,

Is your iMac a 2011 iMac12,2?
Have you installed all updates, there was a firmware update awhile back.

If you hold the file for a short moment before you drop it, does the screen
flicker?
Do you have a lot of icons on the desktop?

Do you have your desktop 'Sort by' set at 'Name'
View > Show View Options - Sort By:

Hi Kevin

Also check
System Preferences - Accessibility. Under Audio make sure "Flash the screen
when an alert occurs" isn't ticked.
Normally you'd see it more often, but always worth checking that as well.

Since installing 9.2.1 my iMac 333 tray loader. Doesn't want to look at any
CDs, just wants to format them. I have given up trying to sort it. Life is
too short. I now do all my CD work on an external Iomega unit, and my son's
ever reliable Windows PC which has never crashed and copies disks at X52 -
every time.

iMac 333 tray loader.

This machine will not read discs burnt on PC or my eMacthey just
keep spinning. It will however read commercial disks such as music
and programme disks

Also it will not read a 256Mb flash drive and wants to initialize it.

Any ideas for me?

Are you burning CD-R's or CD-RW's? CD-RW's can often only be read by
either other CD-RW drivers or newer CD drives.

You also didn't mention which format the disks are burnt in.

Have fun,

OK !So what format is the Flash now ? MS-DOS ?

The Mac should be able to read that. If it will not I suspect you
have a software

 deficiency .

What OS do u have ?

The Flash drive is as purchasedthe eMac can read anything I put on
it

The iMac is on 9.2. I have had this problem for some time after
burning disks on the eMac. I have tried a different format (9660)
and even installed Joliet Reader to no avail. It is not
constant...sometime it actually reads a homeburnt CD.

I would not be concerned, but I have sold it to friends and they
cannot read homeburnt CDs.

I do not know about your CD problem, although it could be similar to
the Flash drive.

OS9.1 uses MacLink Plus and Mac Easy Open in dealing with foreign file
access.
I guess OS9.2 does the same. Check what you have in the ACTIVE
Extensions System folder.

Just an idea

Bob

When you restart the Mac, are you holding down the "C" key? Otherwise
it will still try to boot off the main drive and not the CDROM.
