iPhoto dosn't like you fiddling around in the iPhoto folder in the 
pictures folder.
Make a duplicate of the iPhoto folder in the pictures folder and store 
it some place else.
Trash the iPhoto folder, not the duplicate
trash the iPhoto preferences
home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
also delete iPhoto cache found in home/Library/caches/iPhoto cache
start iPhoto and reimport your photos from the duplicate iPhoto folder.

this should work
in future, export/copy/print/mail photos only from within the iPhoto 
application.

Sometimes iPhoto refuses to import some JPEGs. There's a utility 
called PhotoFixer that may help in some cases, otherwise you might 
need to open them in GraphicConverter and re-save them and see if 
that works.


And your photos are still there, it's just that iPhoto has lost track of them.
