Indonesia will never forget the heroic deeds of the Cuban doctors
. Raúl attends ceremony for the decoration of the medical brigade

BY ARNALDO MUSA-Granma daily staff writer-

"WE have witnessed their professional ability, dedication and their great
affection for other human beings. Their heroic deeds will never be forgotten,"
affirmed Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono upon decorating the
medical brigade that recently lent assistance to the earthquake victims of that
sister nation, in a ceremony headed by Raúl Castro Ruz, first vice president of
the Council of State and Ministers.

The presentation of the Satya Lencana Kabaktian Sosial decoration-for having
provided exceptional services to Indonesian society-to the 135 members of the
brigade, as well as to doctors Yorgel Sorial Acosta and Arelys Felicia Dorta
Delgado and nurses Tomasa Caussse Rabat and Alicia Maya González, was
symbolically presented by the president to by Luis Orlando Olivero Serrano,
chief of the group.

Yudhoyono recalled that the Cuban medical personnel were among the first to
arrive in the country just after the disaster occurred, to help complete
strangers, and he added: "They linked up with the Indonesian medical brigade,
bringing hope and tranquility and snatching many lives from the jaws of death."

In a period of just three months 773 major and 2,436 minor operations were
performed, as well as 34 births attended with zero infant mortality. Nearly
10,000 tetanus immunizations were given and two field hospitals were donated to
the Indonesian government.

The Indonesian president stated that this is an example of the close friendship
that exists between the two nations. He conveyed the gratitude of the
Yogyakarta people of Central Java and of the entire archipelago, and said that
the medals given are reminders that on the other side of the world there will
always be people who remember them with gratitude and affection.

The ceremony was attended by Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque and the Health
Minister Dr. José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, who stressed in his address that
Indonesia and Cuba have further strengthened their bonds of friendship and that
an act such as this proves that it is possible to bring together peoples who
are geographically so distant
