Saudi Women Are Safe Drivers, Says Bahrain's Traffic Chief
                  P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News

JEDDAH, 4 April 2006 - Although there is a standing ban on
women driving in the Kingdom, hundreds of Saudi women drive legally in
neighboring countries.

Col. Hassan Al-Sameem, director general of traffic in
Bahrain, said he was happy with Saudi women drivers. They obey the rules and
have not involved so far in any traffic violations.

"Despite the presence of a large number of Saudi women
drivers in Bahrain, not a single case of traffic violation has been registered
against them," Al-Riyadh Arabic daily quoted Sameem as saying.

Bahrain's traffic department has issued driving licenses to
1,107 Saudi women, Sameem confirmed. He said Saudi women have displayed
exceptional control and concentration while driving.

However, he pointed out that Saudi men had caused 38
accidents, two of them fatal, in the last five months.

The report has once again brought into focus the issue of
women driving in Saudi Arabia. Muhammad Al-Zulfa, a member of the Shoura
Council, called for the government's intervention after the consultative body
refused to debate his proposal to lift the ban on women driving.

"I hope the Kingdom's leadership will look into the matter
because the government is best placed to settle this issue in the interest of
society," he said.

In an interview with the US television channel ABC News last
year, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah said Saudi women would be
permitted to drive someday. However, he had said that he would not lift the ban
against the will of his people.

Crown Prince Sultan has also emphasized the government's
readiness to open the way for women driving with the consent of their families.
A draft law recently approved by the Shoura Council does not specifically
stipulate a ban on women's driving.

Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani has said that
there was nothing in the Saudi law that forbids women from applying for a
driving license.
