The Mayberry Gossip Club Project
Friends, I'm trying to start a new project which will be a community wide effort for Mayberry fans. I've set up a Wiki (you don't have to know what that means to join in) where we can all work together to build an online knowledge base of every piece of Mayberry information we know. I'd love to see an online Episode guide with EVERYTHING in there. Trivia, characters, mistakes, and anything else that we can think of. If you're interested, please drop by and start helping here at the beginning of this project. It should be loads of fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. I'm really hoping that WBMUTBB members will step up and help to make this a wonderful project. I need your help to do this because it's way to big for one but with 1500 membersour club could make this happen. Barney's feelings for Thelma Lou
>>>Remember the class reunion? He acted all sad and lonely when he found out >>>Thelma Lou had married until another girl showed him some interest, and then he perked up real quick. This was probably done to end the show on a happy note, but it sure left me feeling like Barney's love for Thel was not all that deep, and maybe that was the real reason why he had not asked her to marry him in the first place. And you can't really blame him for not marrying her if his love wasn't deep enough no matter how WE felt about it. How did you feel? Based on his actions, DID Barney love Thelma Lou enough to marry her years earlier?<<< Lydia, I haven't seen that episode in a long time (looking forward to the season six set coming out so that I can view it again), but I'll put in my two cents' worth anyway. (Seems like I've been putting in my two cents a lot lately. If I keep it up, pretty soon I'll have put in enough to give Olive a sizeable tip! She has those kids to feed, you know.) Well, I'll agree that Barney's reaction to the interest of another woman was probably used to end the episode in an upbeat way. However, with all due respect to you, Lydia, I don't think that it indicated that Barney's love for Thelma Lou was in some way lacking. Rather, I believe he was allowing himself this diversion to mask the pain he was feeling (reminds me of that old Smokey Robinson song "Tears of a Clown"). There is too much evidence that points to Barney's feelings for Thelma Lou being the real thing: 1. Barney dated Thelma Lou on a steady basis for several years. 2. Barney told Thelma Lou that she was the only girl for him, the only girl he loved. 3. When Andy pressed Barney about when he and Thelma Lou would marry, Barney never nixed the idea that he would marry her. He just wasn't ready to take the big step yet. 4. Remember how easily Barney fell into the conversation about the furniture when he and Thelma Lou were walking home from the movie? It was obvious that, in his mind, Barney was planning on making a home with Thelma Lou in the future. It was only when he realized what he was saying that he backed off and qualified the situation with words like "someday" and "if." 5. And the clincher--Barney didn't marry anyone else. Though he dated other women, no one took the place of Thelma Lou. The obstacle in Barney and Thelma Lou's relationship was not that Barney's feelings didn't run deep enough for Thelma Lou, but that Barney had a fear of commitment that he hadn't yet overcome. That's my take on it, anyway! I'll be interested to read what others think. Peanutbutter
Swallowing a spoonful of peanutbutter is VERY dangerous. Please do NOT attempt to do so. If you are unsure of my advise, please contact your local Health Department, Ems, Fire Department, Emegenct Room, and Pediatritians Office. I am sure they will all agree with barn... Peanut Butter and Lost Loves
I loved that story about banning peanut butter in jail. Perhaps they could just throw some peanuts in the cell and the prisoners could just jump up and down on them and make their own. Some of you have expressed my sentiments regarding Barney perking up after finding out about Thelma Lou's marriage and then meeting the adoring Nettie Albright (I think that was her name - the one who looks better as a blonde). I think the idea of his seeming to get over Thelma Lou so quickly was addressed in one of the many books published about the show. It might even go all the way back to Dr. Richard Kelly's book in the early 80's. He stated how inappropriate it seems that Barney could so quickly get over someone with whom he had such a close and long-standing relationship. And especially when he just got finished saying to Andy, "She was the only girl I ever loved". When I originally saw the episode, I was so relieved to have Barney out of the dumps before the show wrapped up that I didn't think much about it. But as we recall, when Barney sees Thel at the reunion he says, "Sorry about not writing to you after I left" or something to that effect. I mean, really! How could you just leave and not "send for her" or at least write and try to come to some kind of conclusion about your relationship. But then, that's TV. And as wonderful as that television show was, it was after all a television show. Subject: Barney loses Thelma Lou at the high school reunion To: WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I watched that episode this week, and as much as I like TAGS, I've always disliked that episode, not for the fact that Thelma Lou married (frankly Barney deserved it for abandoning her). But rather for Barney abruptly getting over his grief because a woman he barely knew (Nettie) came on to him. It's shallow writing and it makes it seem as Thelma Lou and all those years together meant nothing to Barney. Doug Gibson Ogden, UT Yes sir, you have beat the game chapter I recognize that there are some huge TAGS fans in this area. Additionally, I also am a huge TAGS fans. So much so that when my children were still in their cribs (they are now 17 and about to enter college) I would play TAGS episodes recorded on cassette tapes instead of lullabies. I also remember from the forum rules that we are to keep things positive and discuss the better things regarding TAGS. However... First, let me say that I believe TAGS is the absolute best Television has to offer. Yet with that said, there is one TAGS episode that I will probably not be watching again. I happened to watch the above mentioned episode just last night on a local cable access channel and was very disappointed in the story line. I even knew what was going to happen and it still aggravated me. I will never understand why this episode was written as it was. The former gentleman's remarks are absolutely correct. The look on Barney's face at the very moment Thelma Lou introduces her husband is without a doubt one of the lowest moments of any TAGS scenes. When I need an uplifting moment, I turn to TAGS. This particular episode is not very uplifting. It is way to true to life. I'll be stickin' to my beloved B&W episodes. Enjoy the forum... In addition to what you said, remember that Andy was warning Barney not to take Juanita to Morelli's because everybody goes out there (and therefore they might be seen together). I hope I'm not violating a number rule when I say this: The episode where Thelma Lou comes back married (interestingly to the foreman of a wrecking crew) is the one I absolutely will NOT watch. It came on the other day and I quickly changing the channel as I explained my position to my darling person. The episode wasn't fair to Barney. Yes, ol' Barn and Thel loved each other deeply, but their relationship was cheapened with Thelma Lou having married (though who could blame her) and even more when Barney rebounded to Nettie Albright (who had a certain resemblance to Flora). There are some things I just won't abide. Black & white vs color
When I see the color TAGS shows, even with Barney, it makes me wonder. If the first five seasons had been in color would they be as endearing and classic as they are in black and white? I have a compelsion to turn off the color on my TV to get "the feel" of the black and white shows. I do watch the color shows and enjoy many of them. However, I prefer black and white. I just can't imagine watching "The Pickle Story" or "Man in a Hurry" in color. I wonder what causes that? Re: Barney loses Thelma Lou at the high school reunion
I can't help it - I am partial to Nettie. Alberta Walker who played Nettie went on to play Flora Malherbe who was Goober's girlfriend in the color episodes. If Barn hadn't had a little chemistry with Nettie, then Goober might have never had Flora as a girlfriend! But I have to agree, it was a rather shallow flip flop for Barney Flora http://www.geocities.com/barbieintn/Alberta_Nelson_as_Flora.html > > Subject: Barney loses Thelma Lou at the high school reunion > > I watched that episode this week, and as much as I like TAGS, I've > always disliked that episode, not for the fact that Thelma Lou married > (frankly Barney deserved it for abandoning her). Mayberry Sighting
I was watching the movie "The Wild One"with Marlon Brando and saw good old Ben Weaver. Two of the motorcycle gang members were Alvy Moore (Hank Kimball on green acres) and Jerry Paris (The Dick Van Dyke show). Here's a bit of trivia about that movie...Brando & most of the rest of the gang were riding Triumphs, not Harleys.
