It's trivia time for all you trained noticers in training. Can anyone describe a scene where Andy is seen wearing his uniform, but his badge is missing? Re: In Defense of Aunt Bee
My wife and I have discussed this type of thing at length. If one of us were to become famous, where would we draw the line at getting angry? No one wants photographers at their front door all the time, but does a fan asking for an autograph politely really intrude if you are in a public place? Surely if you go in public you expect to be looked at if you are famous. If you can't drive your car out of the parking lot that is different. We met Brad Paisley at a hotel, we were in the pool, he was in the weight room with some people, we knocked on the glass and someone opened it and we asked for an autograph. He graciously said 'no problem' after his workout. We respected his wishes and he came through. We had no intention of demanding anything, acted polite and he did the same. We met George Lindsay and even got to sit at his table and eat supper with him just by chance. I tried my best not to stare or imitate him (very hard) and he turned out to be a great guy. He signed a copy of his book and answered every question I had, once I got past being starstruck. He broke the ice by asking for the salt. I think that is how most celebrities would like you to react, after all they must be glad to have fans. Put yourself in their place, wouldn't you take the time if you had the time to do so? The other side could be true also. If you act rude, obnoxious or pushy, you may not get good results. I think alot of the celebrities who complain about their pictures being taken are in on the whole thing. If you get a chance, stop by Charlie Daniels store in Nashville he is as nice a guy as you could meet, but he did try to eat my chicken wings to go from Hardrock. Maybe I have just been lucky with celebrities so far. I had a chance to read a website about how difficult Aunt Bee was to work with at times. I believe strongly that Francis Bavier truly loved the art of acting, but sometimes some people, including the fans, may have aggravated her. I surely could understand her getting upset when a stranger would just come up to her and ask, Where is Sherrif Taylor or Where is Deputy Fife? Sometimes, I wonder how did she 'really' feel about the fans making such a fuss over TAGS after all those years, and I also wonder how did she really feel when people make icons out of people and when people waste so much money and energy in preserving things but aren't too concerned about the sad things that are happening today in places such as Africa, Indonesia, and elsewhere. Would she really be happy with all of this? This also reminds me of the recent comment that was made by the lady who played Charlene Darling because, after all those years, she says she was still getting fan mail. She commented, It's just ridiculous! Just something for all of us to think about, not to fuss about. Weekend in Mayberry
From: Kim [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: The streets and bazaars of Mayberry To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have often wondered what I would do if I were to be given one hour of time in Mayberry. Ken I've wondered something similar, only mine would have to be a weekend in Mayberry. Here's my itinerary: Friday night - check into the Hotel and after telling Jason who I was and were I came from, I'd catch the movie at the theater. Saturday - get up early and head to the diner for a nice big breakfast, making sure to leave an extra quarter for Olive. Shop at Weavers as well as the other stores of Mayberry, pausing for lunch at the soda fountain, then a tour of the courthouse. Spend the afternoon at the beauty parlor chatting with the ladies. Get dressed up for supper at Morelli's, where I'd see the gypsy playing his violin for Barney and Thelma Lou. Head to Mrs Wiley's for the dance, cookies, punch and nice conversations with Mr Schwump and Ramona. Sunday - attend Church with the Taylors, who've invited me for the noon meal at their house. Afterward, walk to the fillin station for a bottle of pop then to the lake for an afternoon of fishing. Early evening relax on the Taylor's porch before heading home with the sack of sandwiches Aunt Bee made for me. Sweet lady also packed some of her home made pickles, but I'd learn to love em. Anyone else have a Mayberry vacation schedule? Kim - Wylie, TX Kim, Your weekend sounds fun, although I would have to go to Floyds for a haircut when you went to the beauty parlor. I also fear that I would be too tired for fishing on Sunday after Aunt Bea's Sunday Dinner. Although I would like a ride in the squad car so I could run the sireeen! And we would have to go to Thel's for cashew fudge at some point. Hi folks
Hi After working all weekend it is sure nice to see TAGS in my email box. Our milkman... did not have a key the door wasn't locked so he just came on in. See when mom ordered more then a gal of milk he knew us kids couldn't pick it up..so he just carried it in. He also made sure the cups in the fridge were half full so my sister and I could have cereal on saturday am. Sometimes I'd be awake...now mind you I was 4 or 5. he'd ask for some sugar. I may have kissed or hugged him. I do recall replying no, I'm not kissing you today My grandparents dog would meet him in town at thier place and then run a mile to our place to see him out there again. Yes, norman rockwell would have been bored..and in some cases it sounds like Opie lived just down the street. Now I have read about Aunt Bee being a pistol to work with, I believe she may have been hard but she was a stage actress ..who had years of respect and hard work under her belt ( she was 60 or 65 in the tags yrs). How would you feel some kid worked where you did and people were falling all over him or her? Jealous? I know I would be at first. But I may become annoyed with working on stage and being know for only one part. Maybe to her that was an insult? Maybe she felt that way. Maybe she could never fathom that nearly 50 yrs later people would STILL be thinking of her. I would have liked to know her calling her ms. baviar of course. I would not call her Aunt bee..that would be like folks calling me MRS Greeter Miss teacher...ect. Just a thought. Oh yeah i saw Mayor stoner in green acres, the munsters and then again on the Golden Girls.. he sure does get around. 10-4 Erin Mayberry's midwest mocha momma - Luggage? GPS? Comic books? Mayberry intenerary/vacation -
Gee if I only had an hour (or couple of hours) to spend in Mayberry, it would all be spent at Wally's. Drinking pop while sitting on the bench... listening to Gomer spin yarns about this and that to customers sounds pretty good to me! Now if I had a weekend to spend that's another matter altogether. I'd start out my weekend first at Floyd's (naturally) and get the works! Then it's off to Morelli's and from there... who knows? I'd work my way back to town and take it from there. Probably end my vacation with a lemon phosphate from the diner... Whoops! Almost forgot. I'd pick up the latest Keevy Hazelton and Jim Lindsey recordings from Weaver's Dept Store record racks! (Maybe some Bobby Fleet 8-track tapes, too.) Cool!! A. Subject: Meeting Mayberry Cast
Because I was in the music business in the sixties and seventies, I was fortunate enough to meet three members of the Andy Griffith Show cast in person. The first one I met was Jim Nabors. I was B. J. Thomas's bass player at the time, and we were playing in Los Angeles. We were there to play Knot's Berry Farm, The Tonight Show, and Dinah Shore's daytime syndicated show, among other venues. I think we were at the Beverly Hilton, I am not sure, and I got up early one day to get some breakfast. The restaurant was empty except for me and B. J.'s backup singer Rodney Justo, and I looked across the room and there sat Jim Nabors by himself, eating breakfast. He looked very tired. Rodney told me to leave the guy alone, but I couldn't resist. I went to his table and told him I was from Alabama too, and that I had played in his hometown recently. I asked him if he had been back home lately, and he said he hadn't. He was very cordial, but I could tell he was tired. I shook his hand and left him alone. Three or four years later I attended an event in Montgomery, Alabama, a private party associated with a charity drive, and a lot of Nashville stars were there. Over in the corner, by himself, sat Jack Dodson (Howard). As I approached him, he stood up and smiled. We shook hands, and I told him an outright lie. I said I wanted to get his picture for my mother, who was as big an Andy Griffith Show fan as me (she really was). Actually, the picture was for me. He was glad to let me photograph him, and invited me to sit down at his table. I did, but only for a moment. Instead of talking about himself, he directed the conversation towards me, asking about why I was there, and who I was and he asked other things about me. I had things to do, so I left his table, and I have always regretted doing that. Ordinary people aren't that nice, and, especially today, famous people never are. In 1989, Alabama celebrated its introduction as a state, and part of that celebration was a train that traveled all over the state picking up passengers, with the trip ending in Montgomery. At the time, I was the editorial cartoonist for our local newspaper, and my boss was Doug Bradford, editorial page editor. He was from George Lindsey's hometown, and they had been best friends. In fact, George was Doug's best man at his wedding. As we sat sweating on the train in Dothan waiting for the governor to arrive (the air conditioners on train cars didn't work unless the train is in motion) and get on board, George went from car to car, seat to seat, shaking hands with everybody on board. I don't really know about or care too much about the celebrities of today, but I have to think, they aren't much like the the ones of my experience. We are fortunate to have grown up in our own time. Sorry about this post being so long, but these are things I remember that might be interesting to others who grew up in their own Mayberry. I know its not good to try to live in the past, but it can't hurt to go visiting back there when you can.
