Encouraging our members

2007-08-04 Thread Janet Anderson
>>>Maybe people that aren't that familar
with the show shouldn't be on this sight.<<<

Debbie, I hope we won't discourage folks from being part of our little corner
of Mayberry just because they are not as familiar with the show as some of us
are. Obviously, the fellow who took offense at Paul's post now realizes that
he made a wrong assumption, since so many people have clarified what Paul was
actually doing. We have to realize that some of our members are newer fans of
the show who have only recently "discovered" TAGS for themselves and may not
have seen nearly all of the episodes, let alone seen each one multiple times as
many of us have. Let's instead encourage them in their love for this great,
classic show! As they watch TAGS more and continue to read the digest, they
will learn more, and their enjoyment of the show will surely grow.

Remember, the quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain
from heaven. You're not talkin' to a jerk, ya know!

Safety in a small town

2007-08-04 Thread Ruth Stanley
I lived in the town of Freemont Ohio in the 1930s, which at that time was
fairly small & Mayberry like & was a safe place for kids. Mama had grown up in
the big city of Cleveland, so she gave my sister & I what she thought of as
safety rules, one of which was never to get into a car with strangers as well
as never talk to them.
One day as my sister & I & our neighbor Jimmy were walking home, a car stopped
& a lady asked us if we would like a ride home. Jimmy accepted but my sister &
I refused & we were worried that we would never see Jimmy again. Unknown to us,
was that the lady was a friend of moms & recognized my sister &,I but she
wasn't someone we knew. She laughingly told my mom she had trained us well,
when she related it to her. I'm sure little Leon's mom & dad knew he was safe
anywhere he wandered in town, because most folks knew everybody, & knew when
there was someone new in town as in the episode Stranger in Town.

Offended GI

Let's hope the offended GI has gotten the message by now RE: Marine Corps. We
in Mayberry don't offend and we don't take offense. If you can't take the
comments posted here in the spirit of a 50s and 60s laidback lifestyle, then
maybe another web site would be more appropriate for you.

Lockin Up ??? Naw !

2007-08-04 Thread MrsRShipman

Honestly, around here folks seldom lock their doors and I have never seen
anyone use those security button alarm lock things on their vehicle hereabouts.
Just yesterday I was in town an our local grocery store and left my car with
the windows rolled down and stuff inside. No worries. Most all of us here
are like that.
Security systems salesmen would starve out here :)
and when I ran out of gas on the way out, I didn't need AAA. :)
We help each other here in our real Mayberry.
In fact the more I think of it, our sheriff is very similar to Andy...
except he is happily married for a long while now.
He is the one to do the grilling at our fourth of July get together in the
town square. We even have a real town square ! lol, I tend to take it for
granted sometimes but we got something VERY special here. I almost don't want
to
tell others so as to keep it this way.

Support for our troops

2007-08-04 Thread jlj9675
I have an idea to support the troops too. Let's each of us donate what we
can to TAGSRWC in the name of our troops so Jim can send a set (or more) of
the DVDs to the USO that serves our Iraqi forces. I will match whatever is
collected and cover the postage to send these. I can't think of any better
viewing material for our boys (and girls) in uniform!

Being married to a Marine Sergeant and mom to a Marine Corporal currently in
Iraq ...
I shall add my 2 cents...
Gomer was sooo proud of being in the USMC.. he loved every minute of it.
He loved his Sergeant and aimed to please him.
He understood Semper Fi and honor in the Corps.
and I don't recall Gomer ever getting angry.

Marine "Corpse" / Gomer

2007-08-04 Thread IrishMafia32799
I don't think Mr. Mulik thought he was "trying to be funny" in the least
when he called the Marine Corps the "Marine Corpse". What he WAS doing in fact
was referring to and quoting a TAGS episode titled "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." when
Gomer was either drafted (or decide to join because he was soon to be
drafted) into the "United States Marine Corpes". (THAT is the way Gomer
pronounced
it in that episode), as a matter of fact, Andy himself pronounced that way
too (seemingly due to his shock at Gomer actually joining the "Marine
Corps").
I assume the writer of that episode Aaron Ruben was indeed trying to be
funny when he decided to have Gomer AND Andy pronounce it that way, or was it
an
ad lib by Andy Griffith and Jim Nabors? (either way it succeeded in being
funny), and they did not intend a single ounce of disrespect or a "slur", nor
did Mr. Mulik. This was episode number 127, from season 4, and first aired on
May 18, 1964.

Project Mayberry

2007-08-04 Thread Ken Anderson
I hope I am not violating a rule with this idea.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I am donating six of my books to the
troops in Iraq. My books cost me approximately $7.00 each to print. If any
of you would like to buy a book to donate to the troops I will let you have
one for $8.00. ( selling price is $14.95) The $1.00 will be used for
packing the books and gas for delivering them. I would put your name and
address with "Donated by" on the inside cover so you will be sent a thank
you. ( The newspaper article said to do that). I will deliver them to the
pick up spot and they will ship them free. All you would need to do is
email me your name and address and you could send the money later. I would
need to get the books to the pick up site within the next few days.

Mayberry in Iraq

2007-08-04 Thread Ken Anderson
There was an article in our morning paper today asking for book donations to
be sent to our troops in Iraq. They especially wanted local authors to
donate books. I took six of my "Mayberry Reflection" books and donated
them. We have discussed many times on the Digest as to what we should do
with our old VHS tapes of TAGS. I had already given all mine away,
otherwise I would have donated them to be shipped along with the books.
Maybe that is something those of you who have old tapes could look into
doing. Not sure if they would take them, but it sure would be worth
checking out. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the "Spirit of Mayberry" could
find its way into that troubled part of the world. I am sure it would bring
some very enjoyable moments to our troops. Several years ago a friend of
mine went to the middle east on a missionary trip and he borrowed a number
of my TAGS videos to take along to use as teaching tools with the children.
They were not allowed to do any religious teaching so he thought TAGS would
work great. When he came back and returned the tapes he said the children
just loved them.

Paul

2007-08-04 Thread Debbie Caruso

Dear Paul,
I'm sorry that someone misunderstood your comment about the military. I did
not misunderstand it at all because I am a fan of TAGS...Anyone that is
truely a fan would have gotten exactly what you were doing. My son -n-law is
military and has been in Iraq but not for one minute did I think that you
were doing anything but quoting Gomer. Maybe people that aren't that familar
with the show shouldn't be on this sight.
