Man in a Hurry
>>>But there is one troubling aspect of the show, and I'm not talking about how the man walking into to town, right up to the Taylors coming out of church and addresses Sheriff Taylor by name.. >>> We didn't see it happen, but I figure Mr. Tucker approached someone outside the church and explained his predicament. Most any Mayberryian would have responded with something like, "Sheriff Taylor will help you, that's him over there by the police car." Now if I could just figure out why Andy drove to church in the first place, when his house is just a hundred feet away. --Paul Mulik ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Re: Felling bad for Gomer
Gomer did not take any money for working on the business man's Lincoln Continental because Gomer considered it a privaledge to work on such a fine car which was unseen in a little town of Mayberry, NC. The man had a change of heart and said it was not running right just so Gomer would take it back to the shop and He could stay a little while longer to slow down and relax in Mayberry and soke up some of the local hospitality and small town way of life that ALL of us miss and want to go back to. You-all know that Gomer never let anything bother him. He would get over it just like that and move on to something else. I think we all could learn a leason from Gomer's good natured atitude. Lot of Lifes Leasons in that there show. As a matter of fact. I had the opportunity to go to Mt. Airy, (Mayberry) this past Saturday and enjoy one of those scrumpchously delicious porkchop sammiches. Gomer says Hi. Motorbike cop, Fife. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Mayberry Days Parade Help
Hello Everyone, My niece and I are planning on being in the parade at Mayberry Days this year. I was wondering if you all could give us some suggestions, as far as portraying an "off screen" character from the show such as Sarah, Ernest T Bass cousin, etc. Thanks for all your help / suggestions. Zman Goober says he can't do William Holden cause he talks like everyone else. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Party line in Mayberry
>>>However, as one who grew up with a party line system, I have often wondered how the people in Mayberry can answer their phones so quickly. When on a party system each home would be given a specific ring. Our ring when I was a kid was two longs and a short. So you always had to listen carefully to make sure it was ringing your home.<<< Ken, I'm in my late forties, and when I was a kid, we still had a party line. (Being out in the country, we were probably later getting a private line than city folks.) However, I'm sure that our phone had a regular ring and that we didn't hear other people's calls. The only time we knew someone else was on the line was when we picked up the phone to make a call and heard other people talking. So I figure it was that way in Mayberry, too. My mom, however, told us that when she was young, each household on the line had a distinct ring. Foster Brooks/Hal Smith
>>>If Hal Smith had not been chosen for the part of Otis, who do you think would have been a good choice for the part? My vote would have been for Foster Brooks.<<< Foster Brooks was certainly good at imitating a drunk. But I can't imagine anyone else making a satisfactory Otis. Hal Smith was incredibly funny, but he also brought warmth, sincerity, and a certain ingenuousness to the role that endeared him to viewers. These qualities made him seem, in a way, more like a naughty boy than a drunken man and, thus, made his role as the town drunk more palatable. They are also why Barney described Otis as a "nice man" and was moved to tears to think of what it would be like if Otis died. Man in a Hurry
>>>Anyone else ever bothered by that aspect of "Man In A Hurry"? Believe me, I love the episode and rank it at or near the top.just curious about that little part of it.<<< I agree that it's easy to feel sorry for poor Gomer in that scene. But I think the point of having Mr. Tucker use the car as his excuse to stay the night is that he was too proud to admit his change of heart. In other words, it revealed something about his character--he was used to being the big shot who was always right (in his own mind, anyway!) and didn't know how to be humble. Andy understood that and went along with it. I think Andy realized that if Mr. Tucker's pride were hurt, he might not stay after all. I always assumed that Andy took Gomer aside later and explained things to him. Our post office
I love hearing about y'all's towns... encouraging! A plate of cookies at your post office mmm I smile thinking about our post lady gal, Wilma The post office is a one woman little building. She is very knowledgeable and helps me a lot when shipping packages or whatever postal needs I may have. She also helps keep us informed of the latest news. She keeps a dish of candy for the younguns and many times we go in and there will be a greeting card settin' out on the counter (to be given to an area resident) for anyone to sign.. be it get well, happy birthday, condolences or congratulations. The other thing about that post office is that, even though they now have a computer there ...there is still no running water and they have an outhouse out back. ;) We sometimes leave baked goodies for our postman in our rural mail box and he leaves us a Thank You note. He always sends us a Christmas card. One winter when the roads had not yet been plowed, he got out of his vehicle and walked in hip deep snow a good long ways, just to deliver us our mail. Hey y'all they are gonna be making sorghum at the Warsaw Heritage days In October. C'mon over :-) See ya in church ! Man in A Hurry did insult Goober
bothers me, also. I never did like that part of the episode. besides, we all know that only an episode or 2 later Gomer will be the best Mechanic in Mayberry, even Wally had to admit such. > We all know the terrific episode "Man In A Hurry".Many of us, rank it as > the number one episode to capture the essence of TAGS. Mayberrians Imperfections
To L. Gillum, Thanks for the well worded comments about Mayberrians, especially where you said that all Mayberrians have human imperfections. One of mine is that I just real picky. I know we have had a little conflict lately over Gomer's pronunciation, but if you're going to sing the Marine Hymn Mayberry style, it's not the Halls of "Montezuma" but the Halls of "Montezumer". Now I mean no offense to any of our armed forces past and present. I have many relatives and friends who are currently enlisted and retired veterans and have the highest esteem for all of them. But if you're singing with a bucket on your head, you've just got to put the "er" in there. - Fussy? Opinionated? Impossible to please? Perfect. Stoner/Pike Debate Continues
Response to Paul Ryans biased post: Folks are still saying the only reason that bypass was constructed was to run the highway past Mayor Stoners brother-in-laws gas station! Furthermore, I recall the time Mayor Stoner met the Governor. Oh my! Definitely NOT Mayberrys finest moment. So remember if you want a Mayor who conducts business up a tree with a bear underneath, vote for Stoner. Save our fat little Mayor Pike. Hes true Mayberry. ringtones
Please forgive me for bringing up the subject of ringtones again, but I am in need of some help. A few years ago I was able to put in the TAGS theme on my phone by manually punching in the tones. I just bought a new phone, and I didn't save those instructions for doing it manually. Is it still possible to do it that way, rather than downloading from some company that wants my phone number? Any help or reference to a website would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, and lotsa luck to you and yours. Mayberry for our Troops
Thanks again to all of you who donated a book to our troops. I have 35 packed and ready to ship. I was told this morning that I could have until Friday morning, so if anyone still wants to donate a Mayberry Reflections book to our troops for cost at $8.00 just email and I will put your name on one. I was thinking about Sarah again and the Mayberry phone service. It was said that Barney has a three party line as would most of the people in Mayberry. However, as one who grew up with a party line system, I have often wondered how the people in Mayberry can answer their phones so quickly. When on a party system each home would be given a specific ring. Our ring when I was a kid was two longs and a short. So you always had to listen carefully to make sure it was ringing your home. If it rang two longs that went to our neighbors. Of course we then knew they had a phone call, which meant we could listen in. That was a favorite past time for a lot of us kids back then. If you picked up the receiver just right the people talking would not know you were listening. We picked up a lot of interesting gossip that way.
