Mt. Airy
To Brian who plans to go to Mt. Airy. Make sure you take time for all the shops downtown. Each have some neat things. Some are even little museums. The visitor center also has some things on Andy. I think his Matlock jacket is on display there but someone else might be able to confirm. If you like country singer Donna Fargo there is a museum for her also. Make sure you take a Squad Car tour of the city. It is a must. It can be found at Wally's. Next door you can go in and get some photos of a mock jail that looks just like the show set. You will think Barney will come busting in the door at any time. It is just up from downtown. Just ask anyone or call the squad car people for more info. I always like to stop in Mt. Airy on my way down south. If you get lucky you might see a bluegrass jam at the movie theater. Of course visit the barber shop and even get a haircut or some gossip. Plenty to do in town. The pork chop sandwich is the best. Also a visit to Pilot Mountain State Park might be fun too. Old Cure for Drunkenness
We have all seen the outlandish concoction that both Andy and Warren made for Otis to help with his hangover. I am currently reading a book written in 1804 by Jane Austen. In it there is an actual recipe entitled "Remedies for Drunkenness". It is taken from the Still Room Book of Tess Arnold, Penfolds Hall, Derbyshire England 1802-1806. I wonder how this would have set with Otis. A still room, by the way, was a special room that the gentry had in there homes. It was where spirits, preserves, and other drinks and jams were prepared. Take 11/42 oz gentian root, 1 drachm valerian root, 2 drachms best rhubarb root, 3 drachms bitter orange peel, 11/42 oz cardamom seeds, and 1 drachm cinnamon bark. Bruise all together in a mortar, then steep in 1 11/42 pints boiling water, and cover tightly. Let stand until cold. Then strain, bottle, and cork securely. Keep in a dark place. Two tablespoonfuls may be taken every hour before meals. Another cure is to compel the patient to drink nothing but strong spirits for a week. He is sure to be thoroughly disgusted. Now I don't know about you, but I have a feeling good old Otis would definitely chose the latter treatment. The first one would probably give Aunt Bee's kerosene cucumbers a good run for her money. Personally I will stick with my Coke Zero. Mr. Schwamp siting #23
I found a NEW Mr. Schwamp siting, #23. This time he is seen wearing a hat. Does anyone recall any other time he was seen wearing a hat? Anyway, I'll give you a hint that siting #23 is in the 5th season. Can anyone name the scene or episode? 1971 calls to 3 Mayberry Co-stars
An interesting human side to 3 Mayberry celebrities.how can I forget Sept 3 1971. And 51. 00 phonebill calling long distance Conn to Calif 13 character actors from radio film and tv.I compiled 1000 autograph lettes photos but I'm greedy.in those days character actors had their names in the directories.letters and photos weren't enough.among those listed for anyone to call wa 3 co stars of our favorite show. Anita Corsaut. Burt Mustin and Frances Bavier in Raleigh NC .all 3 had a 20 minute call each and it gave me great insight how human and kind and appreciative they were.in short and I had by the way recorded it on my wollensak taperecorder.Anita told me she loved Andy Griffith calling him a pro gracious and on time.she loved her 5 yrs on it.she laughed in embarrassement when I dare ask her about her role in The Blob. 1958 with Steve Mcqueen. Tom you know I was ashamed being. In that film I had to leave the country.I still can't live it down.oh Anita was such a grateful I took time to call and talk about her career. Burt Mustin in his 90s the years we wrote and spoke by phone was floored anyone knew his name but he told me how he didn't get into show buisness until he was in his 60s.he liked his bit part in Desperate :Hours 1955 with Bogart and March and the retakes he did over unlocking a door for Fredrick March.he loved his role on Andy Griffith calling him a pro and asked me the name of the episode where Barney tossed a tomatoe at him as deputy sheriff and Otis and was it Floyd ?sorry I forgot the name of the episode but Burt said the crew cracked up reshooting the scene .Otis got hit with the tomatoe.we kept in touch til he died at 94 in 1977.he admitted with pride people will always know him as Gus the fireman on Leave it to Beaver.lastly.Frances Bavier was every inch in real life what she was as Aunt Bea.she just completed her role on Mayberry RFD and whlle she had strong views on her relationship with the cast she said the Pickle Story was her favorite.she enjoyed her years on the show but my goodness the minute you called her you knew you were talking to Aunt Bea. O my 3rd call to her she said Excuse me Tom.give me a moment.I have a housefull of cats and its time to feed them but they're all over the house.was I impressed.she was so real. And the genuine article.she was Aunt Bea trust me.it was my good friend radio tv announcer Harry von Zell who tipped me off how to call her.and she was right there folks in the white pages.that's just 3 examples of chatting by phone with celebrities.what an experience but my mother wasn't happy with the next month phone bill. $51.00 that's it folks .Tom Kessel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

A challenge
As mr.schwamps No. One fan for 35 years ... [EMAIL PROTECTED]<<< Now there Mr. Kssl, I believe I, among others, would have to challenge you on that there number one Schwamp fan thing. Who eats all the peaches around here anyway I mean who do you think spent hours and hours identifying all those appearances of Mr. Schwamp listed on that web page??? Any published materials in books list only about 10 appearances, but yours truly took that count up into the 20's with the help of a few friends. Why just go to the archives and see who has written the most about him on this Digest...I think that I am probably in the top 2 or 3 there also. Who founded the Schwamp Fan Club and Hair Loss support group?? (me) Who has theories on his occupation (funeral director) his addiction (party's and root beer) and where his name came from...all The Untrained Voice. So just be careful there calling yourself number one. Lets just say that you and me and a couple other folks are in the top Five! But number oneI'd have to tug that hair piece away from you, my friend...I'd have to out-nod and out-smile you, and out-quiet you. Re: Visit to Mt. Airy
This is my first post on the WBMUTBB, so I hope this works and it goes through correctly. Anyway, I'm getting married on August 2nd and then my new husband and I will be heading to Mt. Airy in September for our Honeymoon. We've never been to Mayberry Days and are very much looking forward to it. We will head to Mt. Airy a few days before and also stay at the Andy Griffith Homeplace (it'll be on the Tuesday before Mayberry Days). I read that the house is decorated like the 1930s and 1940s. That is really cool because I love to study those times in history. I also think that some of the TAGS episode resemble things and storylines from the Depression-Era (such as Opie's Hobo Friend, Goodbye, Dolly, Andy Forecloses, etc.) I did hear an interview once with Andy from 1996 on YouTube and he said that they were really showing the 1930s (especially in the early years). But they couldn't totally recreate the decade due to the budget. I thought that was interesting. Oh, one more thing...I love the Citizen's Arrest story with the 11 year old girl. Every time my fiance, Lyle, does a U-turn, I say, "Citizen's Arrest! Citizen's Arrest!" This is getting long, so I'll end it here. -Kristi "In the best of times, our days are numbered anyway. And so it would be a crime against nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that we would put off doing those things for which we were intended for in the first place, the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to hit a ball and to bounce a baby" --Alistaire Cooke ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Don Knotts Hometown Celebration in Morgantown, West Virginia
Anyone who will be able to attend the 'Don Knotts Hometown Celebration', (in addition to taking in the various events on High Street in Morgantown, WV), don't forget Cooper's Rock State Park (just off I-68). In his autobiography, Don (who had a near death experience on the rocks) incorrectly mentioned that Cooper's Rock was located in Pennsylvania. The scenic overlook above the Monongahela River contains graffiti dating back to the 1920s etched in stones. Check it out. I noticed in the TV listings tonight that "Picnic" is showing on one of the movie channels like AMC or TCM - can't remember which. Anyway, it looks like Helen was right.
