I didn't get to go to Mayberry Days this year and was wondering who won the trivia contest. I entered it the last two years, but couldn't hold a candle to the lady in the red dress. Don ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Ask the Historian
Ask the Historian--Tom Thanks for the tale about Allan Hale. It's interesting you said that he liked to be known for more than just Skipper. We have heard that from some of the stars of our favorite show as well. That , in fact, if I remember right is why some of them did not like to attend the TAGS-related events in the early going. Allan is such a big personality with such a presence..I wonder: Did he have a soft-spoken side? If so what was it like? As For Reta Shaw..who did Reta resemble most? ..Elenora Poultice more that Big Maude?? It seems like the stars of that day put a lot of their self-esteem in whether they had a recurring role on a show or not-which is such a shame, because some of them appeared on so many different shows that they were so memorable. For instance..Allan Melvin would always be Alvin Melvin (our favorite Guest star) , I think, whether he was Sgt Hacker or Sam the Butcher or not. Mayberry Hawthorne Village on the Edge of Forever
I have an excellent alternative for using the Mayberry Hawthorne Village buildings. Buy some 'Star Trek' (Original Series) MEGO action figures from the 1970s and make believe Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are energizing down to Mayberry like they did in 'City On the Edge of Forever' and 'Miri.' I can Vouch
"I had heard that Andy Griffith went to see Frances Bavier when shedeclined in health, but she wouldn't let him in. Can anyone vouch forthis? I had read she and Andy had their 'issues' on the show, but itseems like Frances had bigger 'issues' in her life. Sad tale." I can vouch for the truthfulness of this story but it was Ron Howard and his family. I have a friend who grew up in Siler City and his parents and sister still live there. Some years back when his sister was coming out of church on a Sunday at lunch she was approached by a man she readily recognized as Ron Howard. He was looking for "Aunt Bee's" house. My friend's sister let them follow her in the car to the house and she stayed while he tried to get her to the door. She was present until they left and reports that this story is true. Everyone in town reports that she was quite a recluse. I went to school with a fellow who was her UPS man. He went to her home numerous times but never saw her...someone else always came to the door. I enjoy visiting her grave when I go through Siler City. There is always a jar of pickles sitting on her stone. RMJ _ Get more out of the Web. >... Alan Hale...appreciated it when people complimented him on other roles be it stage film or tv than just the obvious such as Gilligans Island... -- Tom, much thanks for the first-hand insights. One of my favorite Alan Hale roles was in "Thunder in Carolina" which had to do with early NASCAR/stock car racing. As a Carolina boy myself, I appreciate that ol' Jeff Pruitt had some of the same ties. I always wondered if they couldn't have made that car go even faster with Goober's help. RE: Investments
>Seeing the stock market plunged over 700 points, I am looking for new investments. Does anyone have a nickel with a buffalo pointing the wrong way that you would like to unload. I couldn't give you any $100 but I might go $75. Or how about a good 1954 Ford that was only driven to church on Sundays? Better yet, is anyone making a record of local musicians where I can buy stock? I want to diversify. I might even be able to come up with $100 to go in on a search for a buried treasure. I do have an extra $400 if anyone wants a partner to open up a Chinese restaurant. All good solid investments. -- Ken, just remember: If you're not a plunger, you'll get killed. Centennial Reply
TAGS fans, Just a note about Andy's appearance in "Centennial". David Jansen did a great job of narrating the miniseries, but if they had followed the book a little closer it should have been Andy's character narrating. Maybe they thought that would have made things sound "folksy" or something, but I always wished they would have done an alternate version with Andy doing the narration. I was watching "Return to Mayberry" yesterday and, having recently finished season one of "Matlock" I kept thinking of Andy as Ben Matlock rather than Andy Taylor, especially early on before I got sucked into the movie more. If I were to vote for a favorite Andy line not from TAGS, it would probably be from "Rustler's Rhapsody" (where he plays one of the bad-guys). Andy's character is trying to recruit the other bad-guys into joining him and says something like, "It may not turn into a range war, exactly, but there'll be a lot of killing. I promise you a LOT of killing." It's just so funny coming from Andy. Sam www.tuttles.net ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Aunt Bee
"Was this the reason Siler City was mentioned so often on TAGS? Ok she retired there but what about her origins? Did she live there before or during TAGS to give reference to the city or is it a coincidence?" I went to Siler City a few years ago and being the curious person that I am I spoke with a lot of people about Aunt Bee. I became good friends with several people there that I still stay in touch with. I spoke to the funeral director, the high sheriff, the cemetery keepers, to mention a few. While not all had nice things to say, Aunt Bee will always be a "darling person" in my heart. If anyone would like to read everything I wrote during my visit, just send me an email...several of you have already, but it was a very interesting visit. I took pictures of her house and her grave and the neighbor across the street gave me several keepsakes from her house that she had obtained after her death.
