Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story
Thanks for the link to the Paul Harvey Rest of the Story about Mt. Airy. I had not heard that one. When I listen to the Rest of the Story programs, it's always fun to try to figure out who the subject is before the end of the program--the Mt. Airy story would have been one we would have all guessed after about the first 20 seconds or so. I'm the one who made the original request, and I was thinking of the essay he did during a Saturday Noon program back in the 1990's called Finding the Way Back to Mayberry. Several were kind enough (behind the eyes) to e-mail me the transcript to that piece--I 'preciate it! I'll ask again if anybody has the audio of that program--I'm guessing it probably doesn't exist, other than in the ABC archives. Anybody have any idea if you can request copies of a program from the network? Keith in Nebraska ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Strongbow
Do you remember the guy that played the leader of the bowling team that played against the Mayberry team? Is he the same guy that played Tom Strongbow, the Indian? Floyd
Are there any trained noticers out there would know the answer to this one.In the first season episode Stranger In Town, Floyd is played by someone other than Howard McNear. I was wondering why that gentleman played Floyd for just that one episode. Somehow Mayberry wouldn't have been the same without Howard McNear playing the role. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
T-shirt for Gomer?
I surfed across an online ad for a t-shirt company and the model was wearing a shirt that might be good for Gomer... The only thing we have to fear is fear itself (and in smaller print) and spiders Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Beevee
the hierachy of Irish names: Beevee would be the original family name. His son would be Mac Beevee (mac being son). The Scots keep the MAC, but the Irish shorten it to Mc and his son would be O'Beevee (grandson or descendant of Beevee). Don't tell Earnest T., but Bass is originally an Englisher name. Happy belated St Patrick's Day Ed O'Dwyer http://sodabread.info Thanks, Ed, for that interesting post on Irish accents and names. I'm always interested in that kind of thing. I believe the Swedish or Norwegians add son to the end of their names as in Johnson meaning son of John. We (you others) should all compile a list of our (your) knowledge and have a section on Mayberry.com entitled Odd Facts Known by Few, or Trivial Trivialities. Or maybe even Philosophical Meanderings. Members could post interesting tie-ins to the show just as Ed did with Mr. McBeevee. Any Germans out there that know where Stonemetz came from? Maybe Barney could ask old Hugo Hopfleisch. He may have been on the wrong side, but he was a heck of a good soldier. Kept the back of his boots nice and shiny. Floyd's hair
Floyd gave himself a touch-up to cover the gray. One never knows when Madelyn Grayson might come to visit. Wretch, deceitful wretch! TV Land is showing the first season of Andy this weekend and I got to noticing that Floyd's hair had a lot more gray in it during the first few shows he was in. The first show he was ever in was Mayberry Goes Hollywood where his name was given as COLBY. His hair is much grayer in this episode than the episode where he is meeting his pen pal. Brenda J. Unresolved Epilogues
One of my favorites is the epilogue to Dogs, Dogs, DogsBarney and Andy are sitting in the courthouse relaxed after finding homes for all 11 dogs. Then a man named Clint Biggers shows up looking for the Dogs as the owner. Andy and Barney then (presumably) have to go out and get back all 11 dogs although it is not shown. Rule #2
I can't tell you how sorry I am for violating Rule #2 last week and creating a big mulage. I always forget that Rule. It was not my intention to besmerch Aunt Bee or her charactor. As was pointed out there are very many episodes where she was fantastic. My favorite Aunt Bee episode is Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee. Some of the all time great TAGS lines come from that episode. If she hadn't been a good hearted person, Andy never would have asked her to help him raise Opie. So like Rule #2 says, I will make every effort to be more positive. It was much warmer in Virginia today. Warmer and more painful Harry in SAlem, VA ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
epilogues
Some very astute observations about the nature of unresolved epilogues and the suspension of disbelief they entail. I think my favorite of these is at the end of The loaded goat when Andy leads the goat over the hill while Barney plays that soothing harmonica solo! It leaves a somewhat poignant feeling that even though the ending is not literally spelled out, that somehow everything will turn out alright. Eric Swolgaard But that's not the epilogue, that is merely the end of act two. In the epilogue, Andy and Barney are back at the courthouse, and one of them calls the blasting engineer to say they may commence their blasting, adding that Jimmy should be safe, since he is safely secured in a field away from town. Then they go into the back room, and Mayor Stoner and Hudge enter, and a moment later they hear a distant BOOM! They jump to the conclusion that Andy, Barney, and Jimmy have all perished, and the mayor solemnly begins a eulogy to the brave heroes, not realizing that they are standing right behind him, listening to every word! Since a lot of folks have chimed in lately regarding the choir robes episode, hasn't anyone noticed that the whole situation with the building leaning to one side could never have happened in the first place? We know from this very episode that the church has a BASEMENT, and there's no way a trickle of water down the side of such a building could cause it to lean to one side. A plain old wooden shack with no foundation, maybe, but not a substantial structure with a basement underneath it. Two Tom's (Baker and Strongbow)
I want to mention a word of thanks to Tom Baker, wonderful job on the radio clip. I love everything Mayberry related and thoroughly enjoyed it.
