Lydia
I believe that Thelma Lou commented that Lydia worked in Mt Pilot - not lived there. When Goober was dating her and bringing her candy, wasn't her house - site of their half hour date - in Mayberry? Opies' Bike Riding
Opie must be a slow bike rider at only 2 miles per hour on average. It must be those tires that are just covered with patches. King of Mayberry, your first name must be Gilley. Speed, speed, speed. Favorite Expressions
Does anyone have a favorite Mayberry expression that you consistantly use around home? I have several. I say make a big moulage about it a lot. Also, when I hear of other people's troubles and problems, I say just like Otis says-Oh, what a mess I've made of my life. Or, discussing the weather,Yeah, I was out there in it. Mollycoddling is another. When my husband eats too much, I say glutton, glutton, GlutTON. When something breaks, Call the man! There is one for every occasion. expressions and Don Knotts' appearances
There are so many expressions I employ from the show that I've lost track. Most of my family and friends realize this after all these years but if they look the least bit confused, I just say That's a Mayberryism! As for Don Knotts' appearances or lack thereof, he was once quoted as saying that it just wore him out so that he had to request to be out now and then to just recuperate. I believe he gave almost as much as Andy in perfecting the episodes but perhaps didn't have Ange's strength. God bless both of them! Barney-less episodes
Exactly WHY was Barney not in some episodes? Did Don Knotts' contract specify that he only be required to do a certain number of episodes per season? That was Don's own idea. He asked to be written out of a few episodes per season, to give him some much-needed time off to rest and relax. My favorite Barney-less BW episodes are The Darlings are Coming and The Bed Jacket. Mayberry Expressions
My sister and I always use Barn's expression from Sermon for Today. Whenever we don't want to do a task, chore, go to work etc. we say Get down there with them spiders and__ ( whatever the task is that we are procrastinating about). No matter how many times we say it, it still makes us laugh! Peggy I've heard just about enough about them spider bites! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Two of our favorite Mayberry expressions are Call the Man!! and That was well put Aunt Bee, well put!! We use the call the man phrase when something is in need of repairing and when one of makes a good point (seems like it doesn't matter what the subject is) we say that was well put. When talking about stories getting passed around, we also like to use the phrase (forgive my spelling on these) Winken'll tell Blinken, Blinken'll tell Nod, Nod'll tell Barney and Barney'll tell you!! Our 12 year old daughter has gotten quite good at using these phrases. Ah, the joys of life in Mayberry!! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Lydia Croosswaite--lived in Mayberry WORKED in Mt. Pilot.
I also remember Thelma Lou saying that Lydia was from Mt. Pilot, and that was why they didn't see her often. She may have moved to Mayberry later on because Goober said she had bad tires in the girl for Goober episode. ?Silvia, Laura Lee Hobbs' coworker I don't know how to spell Crosthwaite but Lydia works in Mt. Pilot. That's why we don't get to see too much of her. She's originally from Greensboro, not the island of Lydia in Greece. Karen Actually Sylvia, Karen is right..Thelma Lou says Lydia works over in Mt. Pilot. That's why we don't get to see her that often. I did watch the DVD, Barney mends a Broken heart. So, that would be easy to get confused. When I brought up that Lydia lived in Mayberry..I was thinking more of the episode where she was Goober's Girlfriend. I knew that she was a local girl in that one. No wonder she needed new tires thought..all that commuting to Mt. Pilot to work. Of course before that, she was Juanita Pike and before that..oh wait, I'm getting too deep here. Did Don Knotts' contract specify that he only be required to do a certain number of episodes per season? Or maybe was it an opportunity to give other characters more screen time? Or was he really on vacation with his mother? A peek at his IMDB listing shows Don also made appearances on The Steve Allen Show and The Red Skelton Show during this period, and popped up in two movies (Move Over, Darling and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World) and starred in a third (The Incredible Mr. Limpet). So it's possibly just some unforeseen scheduling issues related to those. BTW I was surprised to find he actually guest starred on The Joey Bishop Show at one point...as Barney Fife! Mayberry sayings
Brenda, my circle of friends and I often use Mayberryism's in our daily conversations. Someone will say something about themselves and end it with, my mother was the same way. To which someone always replies, I remember that about your mother'. Or as we're ending a phone call we'll add, say hey to the wife. We use so many that they have become second nature to us now. We always talk about making a mulage out of something or giving an interloper the Big Freeze. We use so many that I can't name them all here. I will close with a story that occured just this last fall. A large group of us were meeting at my house for a four vehicle caravan to Blacksburg to see our beloved Va. Tech Hokies (lead by Coach Frank Beamer, who was born in Mt. Airy) take on the dreaded Virginia Cavaliers. There were going to be six riding in my SUV and as we were preparing to leave, my fried Tom, who in his teens and early 20's had been a tire salesman, mentioned that one of my back tires needed air. When someone else asked how Tom had noticed this, I said, When it comes to tires, Tom is a giant. People come from miles around just to hear him talk about tires. We laughed about this one for the rest of the day and into the night. Mayberry never leaves us. Oh, by the way, the Hokies won of course.
