The History of Cucumbers in North Carolina

2010-05-25 Thread Ken Anderson
As most of you know I have a number of compellsions - one being pickles. One
of my most favorite TAGS episodes is of course "The Pickle Story". Since
Barney once said he could always get a job as a brine tester at the pickle
factory I decided to research the growing of cucumbers in North Carolina. Here
is what I learned. The cucumber is believed to be native to India. It was
first brought to North Carolina in the mid 1500's. They were most likely
brought to North America by the Spaniards who then taught Native Americans how
to grow European vegetables. ( chances are the Battle of Mayberry occurred
right at the peak of the cucumber growing season so that is why so few Indians
were in the battle). (It is also too bad Aunt Bee didn't wasn't around at that
time. After the infamous battle, they could have smoked one of her pickles
rather than peace pipes.) Cucumbers are grown all across the state but they do
prefer the well drained soils of the Coastal region of North Carolina. They
grow best in full sun with moderate amounts of rain.

There you have it folks. Everything you ever wanted to know about cucumbers in
North Carolina. Not only is Allan's wonderful Digest a place of fun,
foolishness, and great debates, it is also a place where one can come to
improve one's mind and gain new knowledge. And it doesn't cost a dime, unlike
Barney's Learn a Month Magazine.

Mayberry Businesses

2010-05-25 Thread DAVID QUINN

One business in Mayberry that has not been mentioned is Ted's Pet Shop. In
one show (I forget which), Andy is talking to Thelma Lou on the street in front
of Ted's Pet Shop. Ted's Pet Shop also has the distinction of being the only
chain store in Mayberry, because when Andy goes to Mount Pilot to visit
Barney's Judo teacher, he parks the car in front of Ted's Pet Shop there in
Mount Pilot. Funny thing, both stores look exactly alike in the front. I
guess that is the way it is with chain stores.

Orville Hendricks - Still peddling my butter and eggs. I was a little hurt no
one mentioned that world famous buisness in Mayberry - Orville Hendricks Butter
and Eggs. How soon they forget.

I thought that it was neat that two of the Darling songs really existed. Are
there any others? I always thought they were funny titles put to regular songs.

Re: film editing

2010-05-25 Thread daltonarick
When the show is in the editing room, the editor will look for sounds or
dialogue that are inaudible, such as sweeping or fudge mumbling. In this case of
Barney eating fudge, I don;t know if it was redubbed or not.

Hallelujah Trail

2010-05-25 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. My Dad is 80, lives alone, and loves the Western Movie
Channel. I walked in this morning and he was watching The Hallelujah Trail with
Burt Lancaster. In less than 15 minutes I saw several TAGS actors. Hope Summers
(Clara Edwards) playing a piano; Dub Taylor (preacher, postmaster); Noam
Pitlick (Goobers friend at the car show); and a little old lady as an extra
just as she was in "Those Gossip'n Men". There may have been more if I'd
watched more.

It may have been mentioned, but the Mayberry Diner. Also the newspaper, I

Talking while eating fudge

2010-05-25 Thread hyperauntjan1

I'm not sure about talking and eating fudge, but I do know that if you go way
out on Highway 6 on a motorcycle with your mouth open, it's impossible to
pronounce a word that starts with the letter S.

Finger Prints

2010-05-25 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends, Recently I went to work for the US Census Bureau, and on
your first day you're fingerprinted. Imagine that, and having a pretty girl
hold your hand the whole time. She wore the prettiest purfume, too. I'm glad my
wife didn't see that. I wonder if they use a fingerprint set like Barney wished
for. It sure looked similar.

Thanks, Kim

2010-05-25 Thread Tom Lawrence

Thanks, Kim. I agree on every point.I love "Andy" and the classic comedy. As a
small town/farm kid, I recognize the show's characters as versions of people I
knew/know. Don Knotts was an artist, TV's greatest comic actor. Ever.I grow
weary of the constant and unwanted religious injections as well. My dad was a
church elder and deacon and I grew up around The Bible and our church. But I
don't beat people over the head with it. Faith should be a personal thing. When
people talk loudly about God, family and country, I clutch my wallet a bit
tighter around them. That's one reason I adore "Andy." Laughter is a welcome
gift.Hope this gets in ...tom, who also lived in Lost Wages, Nevada

Silent Fudge...Revisited

2010-05-25 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
Here's one that maybe a "trained noticer" might know. I was watching "Barney
and Thelma Lou, Pt!" (you might need a hanky to dry off after all
of them 'f's) last night, and in the scene where Barn and Andy check doors
together, sharing a bag of store-bought fudge, Barney's mouth seems to be full
of fudge, yet he is clearly enunciating all of the words. That made me wonder
if location filming was done "mute," that is, without recording the sound?
I've read that The Avengers (British show contemporary to TAGS) was filmed this
way during the b/w episodes, although American techniques may have been
different at the time, due to differing technologies, etc.

Maybe the sound could've been dubbed in later just for this particular scene
and others like it.

Has anyone read or heard about this? Paw, it's been praying on my mind.

Over and Under,

Clyde "Barn"
