2010-06-25 Thread Mike Haviland
This may be hard for some, not for the King or Pat but here goes. I want to
know In what episode did Barney litter the street?  I hope Fred Plummer was not
looking. Mike  "TheScamp"

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 11, Issue 181

2010-06-25 Thread jdean46

Hey, Mayberry friends. This morning I spent some time with my mother-in-law,
and
he's a wonderful person,(bless her heart.) She makes the best pickles you've
ver put in your mouth.

I would like to try those pickles, being a pickle nut myself. My late aunt had
a pickle recipe that was so fantastic I sent it off in the mail and it was
included in a cookbook published nationally. I keep a jar of 'em in the frig
all the time. I won't post it here, but I will send it to anybody who wants it.
I call them "Sweet Garlic Dills." My wife says they are so good you would slap
a possum across the jaw just to get at a jar of them.

Tobbaco

2010-06-25 Thread DAVID QUINN

In the episode with Jeff Pruitt he says his neighbor Bertha can pick more
tobbaco than him. As far as I know that is the only time growing tobbaco was
spoken of in TAGS. Quite a few barns were shown on the show, the Flint barn,
the Frisby barn, the Jubal Foster barn, the Tate Fletcher barn, and the barn
that Eddie Brooke hides in. In every one of these barns we see hay but no
tobbaco. And in all of the times we see someone driving in the country, no one
passes a tobbaco field. That is strange since North Carolina plants more acres
in tobbaco than any other state in the union. Strange.

Orville Hendricks - Trying to sell my butter and eggs. Me and Martha do not
raise tobbaco, we have all our land in chicken feed.

Earning Money as a Kid

2010-06-25 Thread Ken Anderson
I just finished watching the two episodes where Opie worked at the drugstore
and the grocery store. They sure brought back memories of how I got money
when I was a kid. I would be very interested in hearing how the rest of you
got money when you were a kid. Like Opie my friends and I would find pop
bottles and redeem them for two cents each. We would go to the town dump
and hunt around until we found some. Another source of money was cutting
out coupons in magazines for grocery items. Our small town grocer would
give us cash for the coupons. Of course back then there weren't many
coupons used and they were usually for very small amounts, but we could get
some extra dimes and quarters doing this. Then we also had Kool Aid stands
on hot summer days. Of course I tried selling numerous items like greeting
cards and flower seeds, but like Opie and his Miracle Salve, that usually
was a disaster. When I got a little older I sold the Sunday newspapers on
the steps of our drug store on fall days when the druggist and his wife
would go to Packer games. When I hit 13 I began my five year stint as a
pinsetter in our local bowling alley where we were paid ten cents a game and
we had to set two lanes at a time. I could actually earn as much as five or
six dollars a week doing this. However, my best source of money was a
parking lot outside the dance hall just down the street from where I lived.
There were wedding dances there just about every Saturday night so early
Sunday morning I would sneak out to the parking lot and walk up and down it
until I covered every square foot. It never failed that I would usually
find a few dollars in change each Sunday morning. I even found an
occasional dollar bill and one time had the great good fortune of finding a
ten dollar bill.

Now I would imagine many of you must have had some interesting and creative
ways to make money as a kid. It would be great reading all about them.

RE: weather

2010-06-25 Thread Good, Don
<... We're having some dry, hot weather here in NC. Two weeks with no
rain and above 90 degree temps. I've learned that everybody complains
about the weather but nobody does anything about it. Did Calvin Coolidge
say that? Well, just what did Calvin Coolidge say? Oh yeah, "I do not
choose to run." Yep, he said that.

I believe Calvin Coolidge also said, "Ninety-two."

RE: pickles

2010-06-25 Thread Good, Don
<...When done, there's not a pickle in heaven that can hold a candle to
hers. I hope she'll enter them in the county fair next year...

You might want to encourage her to enter the shirt-washing contest too.
But watch out. Like Clara with pickles, Aunt Lucy is pretty stiff
competition.
