color episodes and ads for Mr. Schwump

2010-09-29 Thread jlj9675
My all-time favorite episode is a colour one; "Only a Rose," in which Clara
gives up her blue ribbon to Aunt Bee; a greater sacrifice in the name of
friendship and fairness you'd be hard to find! As for ads in USA Today
in hopes of finding Mr. Schwump, I would be afraid of wasting money if none
of his kinfolk read this publication; I only read it when I travel and it's
free in the hotel.

NC Geography

2010-09-29 Thread Maurine Taylor
The short answer is "Yes."  The writers dealt with an unrealistic geography of
NC.   But I wonder if they did so to make sure to mention special places.
"Toast" and "Star," which each actually had town limit signs back to back were
mentioned.  Manteo, Siler City, even the relative size of "Mt. Pilot" and its
relationship to "Mayberry" didn't fit the map.  And wasn't Fancy Gap placed in
NC rather than over the line in Virginia?  Imagine my surprise when I moved to
NC and found out where stuff really was!  You don't suppose they were just
messin' with my head.

(if i am reading it right)...a full page national ad, B&W, during the week
is just shy of $120,000 :-)  however if you spend $8,000,000 or more (yes
that's
8 MILLION)  you can get a 26% discount!  now if you would want a separate
section (insert), 2 pages is only $40,000 + about a $100 for depending on
regional or national.   there are a lot  cheaper rates, but i can't quite
figure
out exactly what they apply to...

2010-09-29 Thread Linda Stewart
Ref Topic #3 WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 11, Issue 281

I enjoy many of the color episodes - The spaghetti story is hilarious. My
favorite is the last episode, A Girl for Goober, Mayberry's "E-Harmony"
episode. I think it was touching that Goober is portrayed as someone besides a
"dip stick". Even though he and his match were as different as night and day,
they formed a friendship. Goober said he was "looking for a nice person and
you sure are that" (maybe not accurately quoted but close enough).A tip:
Turn the color off on the color episodes. It makes a huge psychological
difference and it's therapedic.

2010-09-29 Thread info
While I am not as fond of the color shows, I do like some. Howard the
Comedian, Dinner at Eight. But, someone mentioned the lawyer in the bathing
suit show and not liking it. I don't mind watching it because of the terrible
sunburn that Andy got and then he has to explain it to everyone. Including
Helen. Helen is always so jealous of every woman that Andy talks to. It just
strikes me funny when Andy has such a red face from sitting in the sun.

What Calvin Coolidge said

2010-09-29 Thread Janet Anderson
Hey, I finally found out what Calvin Coolidge said, other than "I choose not to
run." I get a daily e-mail that includes quotes from the founding fathers and
other political leaders through the years. This was in today's e-mail:

"We demand entire freedom of action and then expect the government in some
miraculous way to save us from the consequences of our own acts
Self-government means self-reliance." --President Calvin Coolidge (1873-1933)

I think old Calvin had something there!

Coming to Roanoke

2010-09-29 Thread Harry Brewbaker
Larry,  Are they coming to Roanoke with John Masters for the choir
competition??  Just kidding.  I grew up and work in Roanoke, now live next door
in Salem. Tell her to try and get by the Texas Tavern or Roanoke Weiner Stand
while she's here.  Closest thing we have to the Snappy Lunch.  Roanoke Weiner
Stand is of course, hot dogs.  Texas Tavern has chili, small burgers, hot dogs
and a wonderful sandwich called the Cheesy Western.  Large hamburger bun, small
burger pattie, fried egg, cheese, onions and their special relish.  Might sound
wierd, but it's god!

Tell her to have fun.  Maybe she can get to the top of Mill Mountain and see
the Mill Mountain Star.  There is a webcam on the star at
www.roanokeva.gov/starcam.  But you won't see anything today.  Cloudy and
raining.

I've always been bothered by the misspelled "Ashville" on the train station
schedule in the "Don't Miss a Good Bet" episode.

And, Michael, I'll bite - How far apart are Raleigh and Asheville? I remember
many years ago flying into Raleigh for a seminar in Chapel Hill then taking
some time off for a drive that took me to Asheville. But I have no memory of
the distances involved.
