Pickles???

2011-01-05 Thread Bob James

Harriett: When I was young I can remember being given salt tablets at
summertime football practice or during other times when I would be sweating a
lot to replace the salt that I was sweating out. It's not done as much now as
it is suggested to replace salt and minerals that you lose through heavy
sweating by ingesting sport drinks. The CDC says that salt tablets can still be
given but that it should be done under medical supervision. It's really not
necessary to use them now with the other possibilities available. I'll bet the
pickles were given as a source for salt replacement in the hot Florida
environment. Bob

pickle juice

2011-01-05 Thread Rebecca Spears
Yes, strange, but true- this past summer when it was s hot here in GA,
coaches at the high  and middle school were giving dehydrated players pickle
juice to keep them from throwing up.  So there really is something to that
story. I thought they were nuts too, but then when I heard it during that game-
I remembered the summer story.  This should probably be published in Learn in a
Month.

Mr. Schwump

I'm not being ornery but I vote that the gentlemen pictured from Return to
Mayberry in front of Andy near the end is not our beloved quiet man. The
face shape does not match and his hair looks natural. Poor Mr. Schwump, lost
into obscurity!

Re: oldest TV dad...guess who?

2011-01-05 Thread Dixonhayes
An end-of-year retrospective of celebrities who passed on in 2010 led me to
do a check on who's the oldest surviving TV mom and TV dad. I define it
as they first appeared on their respective shows the longest time ago. And
I could yet be proven wrong, but this is what I've found so far:

The oldest TV dad: none other than Sheriff Taylor himself, Andy Griffith,
whose show premiered in October 1960. He gained the honor last year,
unfortunately, when John Forsythe ("Bachelor Father") passed away. Not far
behind is Dick Van Dyke ("The Dick Van Dyke Show," 1961).

The oldest TV mom: Marjorie Lord, Kathy Williams from "Make Room for
Daddy"/"The Danny Thomas Show," whose first appearance was April 4, 1957.
When
the show had its fifth season premiere (October 7, 1957) she was already
married to Danny. Marjorie narrowly edges out the two surviving Lassie
mothers, Cloris Leachman and June Lockhart. And of course, TAGS was spun off
from "The Danny Thomas Show."

The oldest surviving TV couple: Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.

Lucille, Barney and Thelma Lou got married in the 1986 reunion TV-movie,
"Return to Mayberry," which is available on the special TAGS 50th anniversary
DVD that just came out. They were never married on the series, in fact
the last we heard on the series is that Thelma Lou came back to a class
reunion with a new husband, breaking Barney's heart. (The movie made it clear
that marriage was very shortlived.)
