Cousins
That was an excellent trivia question that "Orville" posed the other day, about naming the TAGS character who was Opie's cousin. One definition of a cousin is a person who is the child of your uncle or aunt, and as was pointed out, once Helen married Andy her siblings became Opie's aunts and/or uncles, and therefore their children would be Opie's cousins. Now here's another trivia question. In three early episodes, Andy and Barney are said to be cousins. Assuming that they are first cousins, which of Andy's parents is the sibling of which of Barney's parents? There are various clues in various episodes. Re: Mayberry scene
Paul, you are not alone! I've always been moved by that scene, too. Barney gets outside and realizes that Andy has always been loyal to him, so he decided to be loyal back. (Kinda like "now he digs you, so you be nice and dig him back!") Another classic scene is in "Andy on Trial" when Barney delivers his monologue blaming himself for the mess Andy was in, and tells everyone what a great sheriff Andy is...that "he's not only a sheriff, but a friend." I just love those episodes! And of course, the ones where Barney gets himself in a pickle, then becomes SO indignant! That is why TAGS is such a great show. No other series can present all these elements, and still be so entertaining! Off my soapbox now... Lying
There has been a lot of news the last few days about politicians lying all over the place. They should be ashamed. That got me to thinking about all the regulars on TAGS who lied. 1. Andy lied to everyone about Lee Drake. 2. Aunt Bea lied to everyone about Orville Hendricks. 3. Emmitt lied to Martha about going bowling. 4. Howard lied to Andy about his Little Brother. 5. Floyd lied to Madylin Grayson about almost everything. But I could not remember any time where Helen or Thelma Lou lied much. Maybe someone else can remember. Orville Hendricks - Peddling Butter and Eggs. Let me tell you, it was awful the way that Beatrice Taylor lied on me. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Names
Hey, Mayberry friends. My name's not mentioned in Mayberry but I've come pretty darn close. My daughter's first name is Joanna as in Joanna Moore (Nurse Peggy.) My son's first name is Michael. Seems like I remember a Mr. or Mrs. McMichaels, just not sure about this one (someone correct me). My granddaughter's middle name is Olivia. Awful close to Oliver, one of Barney's middle names. I know technically, these don't qualify. I just love to talk about my kids and grandkids. I just happen to have these pictures in my wallet...LOL! While reading about Joanna Moore I found that her and Ryan O'Neal's daughter Tatum's middle name is Beatrice. Curious, curious. Larry in Lincolnton "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Did Calvin Coolidge say that? ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Mayberry Scene Moved Me
I know this may be out of the blue, but I rewatched "The Cow Thief" recently and there's one scene in there that absolutely gives me warm, happy goosebumps! When Andy is picking up the cow impressions on the floor, Barney comes back in and explains why he returned: because another mayor of the town thought Sheriff Taylor had another hairbrained idea - that of hiring Barney as his deputy. In my opinion, that's evidence (no pun intended) of what the show is all about loyalty and believing in your friends. Cost of Items in 1961
The following is taken from my small hometown newspaper from May 4, 1961. It gives us a good idea as to food and home prices during the Mayberry era: Ground Beef 39 cents a pound. Bacon 39 cents a pound. Lettuce 10 cents for a crisp solid head sugar 25 pounds for $2.69 Catsup 29 cents Carrots 10 cents a bunch Household Brooms eighty three cents while supplies last Here is a list of homes for sale in that same paper: Modern house with 8 acres of land $6750 Very nice older 8 bedroom home close to school $8700 Older 2 apartment house in city limits $12,000 However, in 1961 I was a pinsetter in our bowling alley setting two lanes at a time and I was paid 10 cents per line. My mother was working as a waitress making 35 cents an hour and my brother was working in a factory earning $1.25/hour. "Everything is AOK in Mayberry." So how about Miss Crump's ruler from when she smacked Ernest T. on the hand and forever became his "mother figure"? Maybe also, Otis's vase. "I've come to fill my vase". Susan Blank Miss Crump (many years later) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
RE: The Oval Window and Curtains
Debbie, Yes, I've noticed that window! It sure does seem to meander about town quite a bit. Did it appear in "Barney and the Choir"? Another thing that seemed to appear quite a bit was interior curtains that separated rooms. That was more of the style back then, but it seems that Thelma Lou's curtains appeared in several other stories as well. Joanna Moore/Nurse Peggy & r/l
To the person who "axed" R/L means Real Life. I was stating that in spite of Nurse Peggys real life problems (Google Joanna Moore) I still liked Nurse Peggy best of all Andy's "girls". My name Marie Marshall isn't in Mayberry tho Marshal Dillon is, I think, mentioned once. As for a time capsule, I'd add a copy of the Diner's menu. One hundred years from now nobody'll believe the Vienna Sausage in tomato gravy with a side of succotash costs so little! My fave one show wonder is Regis. He's holding a sign "Down with the gold standard" as the gold truck is about to pass through town. I love hearing Gomer roam thru the crowd yelling "Regis! Regis!" But then again there is Floyd's Lonely Hearts gal. I just enjoy seeing Floyd staring in the mirror calling himself "A miserable, deceitful wretch." The Oval Window
Has anybody else noticed the oval window that appears in so many different episodes? Either Mayberry had a proliferation of these windows or they moved the wall with the window and used it all over town. I can think of two instances right off the bat: The Williams' home in Barney Fife, Realtor Helen Crump's school room in The Education of Ernest T.
