Mayberry's Fourth of July Celebration

2011-07-03 Thread Ken Anderson
Well Folks it is Independence Day weekend in Mayberry and the town is all ready
to celebrate. The parade is about ready to proceed down Main Street. Leading
the way of course will be the Mayberry Band playing Stars and Stripes. They
will be followed by the Mayberry squad car driven by Deputy Sheriff Barney
Fife. Next comes Miss Mayberry riding in an open convertible wearing a stars
and stripes bathing suit with lit sparklers in her hair. Following Miss
Mayberry comes Ernest T. Bass who reaches into his pouch and starts throwing
rock candy to the kids along the parade route. Only fitting, the Darling
Family follows in their truck with the boys singing Dooley. A short distance
behind the Darlings comes old Regis carrying a sign protesting the gold
standard. Now no parade would be complete without the politicians, so next
comes Mayberry's own fat little mayor, Mayor Pike along with his daughter
Juanita. Orville Monroe comes next with his shiny black hearse loaded up with
all the old dead batteries he has collected around town. Walker's drugstore
comes next with Miss Ellie riding in a convertible with a big container of ice
cream in one hand and a bottle of root beer in the other. She is of course is
"The Root Beer Float". The woman's church group is next riding on a hay wagon
pulled by Jeff Pruitt on his tractor. Aunt Bea is at the piano singing "Toot
Toot Tootsie Goodbye" while the other ladies are singing along and banging on
dishpans. Old Hutch and Jimmy the Goat are following the church ladies and
they are followed by Otis Campbell riding a cow. Right behind Otis comes
Skippy and Daphne in their sporty old convertible. Goober is next with his old
truck and in the back are a bunch of Mayberry kids all who have their bare feet
sticking up in the air. On the door is a sign that says "Goober's Toe Truck".
The final entry in the parade comes into view and it is Floyd Lawson and Mr.
Foley sitting in rocking chairs shaking hands. A sign on their vehicle says
"Mayberry, the Friendly Town".

Oh what a sight it was to behold. The parade lasted over 15 minutes. But the
day has just begun in Mayberry. After the parade everyone will be heading to
the town picnic. At three o'clock Mayor Pike will make a speech and Goober and
Gomer will be shooting off the old cannon. After dark the day's events will
conclude with a gigantic fireworks display out at Meyer's Lake. Barney is in
charge of the fireworks. I have a feeling that is when the excitement will
really begin.

Ken's Parade

2011-07-03 Thread dewey lamb

Ken,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your Mayberry/July 4 post.In my opinion,this is by
far your best
digest contribution. You are quite the wordsmith.I caught myself scrambling to
catch a piece of
candy from Ernest T,watching Charlene & her kin aboard their truck, listening to
the little fat mayor
ramble on as he waved to the crowd.Lest I forget Aunt Bee pumping out her
rendition of Toot
Toot Tootsie...yeah,she was probably gassed.

Through your description, one could see, hear, and feel the excitement as the
parade made it's
way down Main Street.Wonderful literary piece

I wish each and everyone a fun and safe July 4.

Cell Door Keys

2011-07-03 Thread Richmond Lucille
I noticed the other day that when Andy returned from Raleigh and had left
Barney in charge of the office, Barney had arrested practically everybody in
town and when they went to let the folks out of the two cells, there were
miraculously, two key rings.  In every other episode I recall there was only
one key ring, locking people in by mistake or whatever.  Where did the extra
key ring come from?  Hmmm.  Mysteries of Mayberry!!

Independence Day in Mayberry

2011-07-03 Thread Marie
Now, honestly, I thought I'd heard everything. I mean some people just can't
sing. I should know I'm one of 'em. But I don't try singing in public unless
there's a crowd and I can try blending in.

But, today, at the picnic, just before Rev Tucker blessed the food and we sat
down to eat I had the privilege of hearing Juanita Pike sing "God Bless
America". Whoo-eee was that a long song. Let's just say she's no Kate Smith.
Thankfully, the good reverend had a short prayer & we all sat down to eat.

Aunt Bee your baked beans were delicious as was Thelma Lou's potato salad, &
Helen Crump's cole slaw . Andy, you and the Regal Order of the Golden Door to
Good Fellowship. did a great job on the bbq burgers and hot dogs.

No idea who made the Applesauce cake but it was delicious. Clara Edwards, I so
enjoyed your homemade pickles on my hamburger.

I was able to get one of the homemade burger buns made by Mrs. Wiley, Mrs. Rev.
Foley, & Emma Watson and they were delicious.

I understand special thanks go out to Foley's Market & Norman's Groceteria who
donated the ground beef & wiener dogs that the lodge bros. bbq'ed.

Thanks going out as well to Orville Monroe who donated a TV set that was given
as a door prize & ol Ben Weaver who donated some stuff, too. I didn't win but
it was fun anyhow.

Great time was had by all & I look forward to the next great Mayberry day
