Locusts

2014-04-21 Thread Silvia Boosten
I remember in the episode "Bargain Day", when Aunt Bee buys all that meat, it
was a hot day and Opie said, "It's going to be another hot one today Pa, hear
them locusts".

We are in California, and I don't think I have ever seen a locust!  Or a stick
bug.

Bugs

2014-04-21 Thread Jim and Nancy
There were bats in the cave that could got in your hair, not moths.
Moths are very annoying though!

There was one episode in which Opie asked if he could outside and
collect fireflies.

Andy was also trying to swat a fly in the courthouse one day.

I think Aunt BEE should count!!!

Same Old Question

2014-04-21 Thread Steven Mitchell
Hi guys,

Every few years I put this question out there... just to see if I can find
someone that remembers seeing this. When I was a kid... I distinctly
remember seeing a Hunting Safety PSA on our local PBS affiliate that
featured an animated Andy and Barney out hunting ducks (I remember them
being dressed in those winter coats they wore in "Quiet Sam".)

Does anyone remember seeing this?

Bugs

2014-04-21 Thread Paul Mulik
Nice job everybody on naming more kinds of bugs mentioned in Mayberry. I had
forgotten about Darlene Mason's discussion about fireflies. That didn't happen
in Mayberry but it was mentioned aloud so that's good enough. I had also
forgotten Brisco's mentioning a June bug, and the "bugged" cell. Here is an
updated list:

Aphid
Bug Barney feared would get down in his "lair-nix"
Bug in cell (The Tape Recorder)
Bugs Opie served to birds
Centipede
Firebug
Fireflies
Fly
June bug
Moth
Spider

I'm still thinking of nine more that haven't been named yet. In case anyone is
just joining this discussion, the challenge is to name a kind of bug seen or
mentioned in Mayberry.

Hints: one is imaginary (and it bites), one is used for bait, and one is seen
on the street.

Otis was leery of fireflies in one episode because one of them had
knocked him down when he had a snootfull. "Doggone firefly -- knocked
me right down!"

Fireflies

Fireflies were mentioned by Darlene Mason. She put them in a jar when she was
growing up back in Kansas.
