WBMUTBB Silent Auction at Mayberry Days
We're coming up on the one month countdown to the 25th Mayberry Days festival. Our chapter's annual service project is the WBMUTBB Silent Auction. This will be our 15th auction! All of the proceeds benefit the Surry Arts Council's efforts to host Mayberry Days. The Silent Auction is held on Saturday of the festival in front of the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have always been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't find in the stores. All donations are tax deductible. There are three ways to help - donating an item, donating your time, and bidding on auction items. If you do not feel creative, you can help prepare for and during the auction. It is only a couple hours and gives you a chance to visit with people and help out others - just like Mayberry! Bidding is from 10 a.m. to Noon. Remember you must be present at Noon to pay for your item and take home your treasures. If you have something to donate, would like to help, have a question, or just want more information, please send me an email (hey2goo...@yahoo.com). It is most helpful to let me know in advance of any item your plan to donate so bid sheets can be made beforehand. Thanks to everyone who has helped in the previous 14 years. I have to disagree with that political cartoon. It's important that we teach our children to NOT be afraid of the police but to cooperate with them under all circumstances. If a law enforcement officer abuses his power, you wait till after the incident to report it, you do not argue or fight with them. Favorite Quotes
There are two quotes that I really enjoy and that still make me smile. The quotes are from the episode, Opie the Birdman. Opie had nursed the birds Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod until they were ready to fly on their own. Andy and Opie determine that it is time to release the birds from their cage. Opie tells Andy towards the end of the episode, The cage sure looks empty Pa. Andy then replies, But don't the trees look nice and full. Those two lines still make me smile today. When Andy and Barney were looking at their school annual, it is revealed that Andy's name is actually Andrew Jackson Taylor. Andrew is a biblical name, being one of Jesus' disciples.There are several lesser alumni of TAGS that have biblical names, such as Ben (Benjamin) Weaver and Jubal Foster.However I could only think of one other main character on TAGS with a biblical name, can you think of who it is? Hint:This name is a name that you would not think would appear in the bible at first glance.Also feel free to think of any more of the lesser alumni that might have had biblical names. Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. The name Orville does not appear in the bible, but Martha's name does. However Martha never appeared on TAGS, she was only mentioned. Are you thinking of Johnny Paul Jason, Opie's best friend? Paul is certainly a Biblical name! I'm not sure Asa was a main character, but Asa was a King of Judah. John Masters, the choir director, also may not be a major character, but John was a major Biblical character! I also think of Emmett's wife, Martha! All the discussion about Biblical names in Mayberry brings to mind something else regarding the Bible that the men folk of Mayberry would really frown upon. I also doubt if Reverend Tucker would dare give a sermon about it. The bible very explicitly talks about how the men folk should help out with the cooking. In fact an entire book of the Bible talks about how the husbands and fathers in families should make the coffee.
