Fond Memories

2015-07-11 Thread Harry Brewbaker
Ken, Even though I grew up in the 60's, I have many of the same fond memories
of childhood summers. There seemed to be no where you couldn't go on your
bicycle. Sometime if I didn't want her coming along, I'd have to put my dog in
the basement because she followed me everywhere. She saw us play a lot of
baseball. Like you we never had A/C so it didn't matter how hot it was
outside, we never stayed inside. We played baseball, swam and did almost the
same things here in Virginia that you did in Wisconsin. I guess by the 60's
inflation had set in and we would collect 5 pop bottles for 10 cents to go to
the local store and get a 16oz Double Cola and a 5-pack of baseball cards. We
always got the Double Cola because the Cokes and Dr. Peppers only came in 10oz
bottles. We were thrifty shoppers back then. If the baseball cards were of
players that you had many multiples of, they'd go in the bike spokes to make a
motor sound going down the road.

I think kids today are missing out on a lot by doing nothing but playing video
games and surfing the internet. I read an article several years ago about arm
injuries to current baseball pitchers. A theory was mentioned that there are
more arm and shoulder injuries to current players because they spent too much
time indoors as kids instead of being out playing baseball all the time like we
did. Their arms had not been trained to withstand the rigors of constantly
throwing a ball.

Well, that's my two cents as an old curmudgeon. I miss the good old days.
But, as a recently passed friend of mine once said, one of these days, THESE
will be the good old days.
