Re: Question about Floyd and "Punch in the Nose"
>>>Here's my question in "The case of a punch in the nose" who is the barber >>>coming out of Floyds shop as Barney and Goober are pulling up to the court >>>house?<<< If you look carefully (and I could post a screen shot, but I can't do that on the digest), that man is apparently a customer of Floyd. He is not wearing the barber coat that Floyd wears. Instead, it appears to be a cape he is wearing. We assume he hopped out of the barber chair in the middle of a haircut to check out the excitement in the street. The man himself is a background actor (extra) who can be seen in other episodes. Now, there are instances where someone else (an extra) is playing Floyd in a long shot. I forget which episode this is, but one of the extras, a guy who wears glasses, can be seen briefly through the barber shop window posing as Floyd. This was done so as to avoid the trouble of using the regular actor as "background scenery," since most people would never realize it was someone else anyway. In that episode, the extra was wearing Floyd's barber coat and was standing over someone in the chair. So the situations were different. Hope this explanation helps. Remember the lady who made the cape for Miss Mayberry and ended up wearing it? I can't recall her name but the actress appeared in a simply delightful film I had recorded from TCM recently. It was titled The Next Voice You Hear, starring Nancy Reagan and James Whitmore. The premise was that God Himself spoke on the radio to revitalize the whole world and it was most heartwarming. Our Mayberry alumnus was as lovely and charming as ever and it was wonderful to see her. The film came out in 1950. The Sabbath
I was born and raised in South Carolina and I remember when stores were closed on Sunday. It was called the "Blue Law'. I was told that it was called that because it was written on blue paper. When I was married in 1970 and lived in Lexington, Kentucky they were still in effect. It was hard trying to find something to cook. We found a little store that was open and he charged way more than the other stores would charge. But when you're hungry, you'll pay the price. We were married the day before we got to where we were going to live and I didn't have time to buy groceries. Stores in the town I lived in before I moved to Lexington were open on Sunday and I assumed the stores in Lexington would be open too. Boy, was I wrong!! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 18, Issue 107
Good observation! In the small town where I grew up in West Virginia in the 50s and early 60s, everything was closed EXCEPT the drug store, which opened for a few hours in the afternoon so people could get needed medicines. Perhaps that was what happened in Mayberry as well? In small-town America in the 50's and 60's, I would think that just about every type of store would have been closed on Sunday, "the Sabbath" - especially in the South. I grew up in a northern city, and almost nothing was open on Sundays when I was a kid. I seem to recall at least one other TAGS episode where reference was made to going to a store on Sunday. Just wondering. Joe Suszczynski Grand Island, NY ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
