Re: Going to preaching
>>>So, perhaps this is what Andy meant by "going to preaching." Maybe in his >>>boyhood they went to church every Sunday but didn't have preaching every >>>Sunday. Any thoughts?<<< Paul, that's interesting. I hadn't ever thought about it that way. I just always assumed it was a regional expression. Aunt Bee, It's been my observation that in the color episodes, Andy himself, has a bit of anger management issues. So I guess Andy and Helen were truly made for each other!! Thanks, Karen Pearson a.k.a My Darling Person ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Preaching
I grew up in a small town, Tunkhannock Pennsylvania we walked to the Church for services and the children went to Sunday School at 10:00 and the adults went to Preaching at 11:00 of course you could go to both but if you were only going to the 11:00 service you said you were going to Preaching as opposed to Sunday School. Preaching
Regarding Paul's comments about "preaching". In Opie's Newspaper episode when Andy went looking for the gossip newspaper at Reverend Tucker's, Andy called the Reverend "Preacher" three times. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
sharing
I must share a personal moment recently. When I received the latest Bullet, I felt compelled to go shopping at Weaver's. Well, with all the new items available, I had a spree. When the big box arrived, it was like having another Christmas, as Opie said that time he went shopping at the sporting goods store after finding Parnell's purse with $50 in it. Everything is so cute and well-made; I've had compliments already on the shirts, makeup bag and tote bag with Barn's face on it. I love promoting Mayberry and seeing the fine responses when I'm questioned. Aunt Bee of Orlando ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
preachin'
We sometimes referred to church service as going to preaching. And some churches we attended over the years, being in the military, had a minister who had a full-time job in another field so was not available every day to attend to the needs of the congregants. Others had a full-time clergyman who visited the flock and counselled, conducted ceremonies, etc. on a nearly daily basis. He was furnished a house and automobile thru the tithing of the congregation. Every church was different except those actually on the base, where a chaplain has only that one job but it's a big one, depending on how many GIs on that base and how many chaplains on duty at any particular time. Those who answer the call of God to minister are truly to be admired and cherished IMHO. Aunt Bee of Orlando ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Howard The Bowler
Being an avid bowler myself I noticed something when Howard steps up to bowl. I have seen the episode many times and saw it again today. He walks to the foul line and then takes four steps back to establish his starting point. When he steps out to roll the ball he only takes two steps. Has anyone else noticed this? Re: Helen Crump is not a grump
> When she was first introduced to the show she was rather a humble, lady-like > woman. The brief introduction to Helen was in the classroom where she discovered the boys were taking their direction from Opie who was taking his direction from Andy with regards to the history of this country, and dates and stuff. While she may have been quite meek in the classroom, you can't say she was "rather humble" or "lady-like" as she really did give the devil to Andy in the court room, even causing Barney to take a step back as she stormed out. And Andy's only comment was "See that foot? How can that great big foot, all of it, fit in my mouth?" I won't comment on the rest of her appearances as we all have different feelings on whether she was lady-like or a witch..and we know very well, that only shows with some controversy are going to keep watcher's attention. If every character was as sweet as we wish them all to be, there's not much of a story line to create. She was quite lady-like in the reunion movie and that's the Helen I'll remember. Regarding the fact that she should have been upfront with Andy about her undercover work in college, she had no idea he was doing a background check on her at the time. However, as fast as rumors spread in Mayberry I'm surprised the school board was able to keep all that information under their hats for long, with those wagging tongues of theirs. RE: Going to preaching
I always found it a bit odd that Andy referred to church services as "preaching." For example, in Sermon for Today, when Aunt Bee is talking to Clara on the phone, Andy asks her, "I'm goin' to preachin'. You comin'?" Maybe this is a Southern expression. I've never heard it outside of TAGS --- Growing up in NC in the 60s, we occasionally referred to church as "preaching" so I never thought much about it. It doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't an every Sunday thing. Don "dry as dust" Good ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Preaching
Paul Mulik, I'm from a little bit further south than Mt. Airy and I've been going to preaching all my life. Matter of fact, I went yesterday. It comes from the fact there were 2 elements to a Sunday morning service. First, you had Sunday School followed by preaching. dan --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
