Opie told to take bath
Ken, About Opie being told to take a bath: It just so happens that last night I watched "A wife for Andy" Opie comes in all dirty and beat up from a fight he had at school. He tells Andy he will have to go talk to Miss Crump because she wanted to see all the boys mothers who were in the fight. That leads to Barney saying his "How long are you gonna try to be both father and mother to that boy" line. Anyway, Opie is all dirty and Andy tells him to go home and find that rag he likes so much and get cleaned up. I think it is reasonable to take this as Andy telling Opie to go home and take a bath. Barn and Thel in Arkansas Ps. My mom also grew up without an indoor bathroom and thus without daily baths. (this was in the late 60's and early 70's so a lot of kids at her school had bathrooms but they were poor and in the country and were a little behind in getting one) Anyway she was elected the homecoming queen of her school. I always thought it was neat that the girl with no bathroom was homecoming queen. She was a wonderful lady and everyone knew it. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
warm fuzzy moments
Dewey, Two warm fuzzy moments come to mind right off. The first one was mentioned recently. In the episode about the cow thief : When Barney after first leaving Andy comes back in and says that there was another time when they said Andy had a crazy idea, hiring him as his deputy. So Barn stood by his side when everyone else doubted him. The second one is in Mr. McBeevee. When Barney says to Andy : You don't really believe in this Mr. McBeevee do you? Andy says "No, but I believe in Opie." That line always gives me goose bumps. Barn and Thel in Arkansas ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Darling Boy made our day
Hello fellow citizens of Mayberry, My wife and I spent Memorial Day weekend in Branson. We are huge bluegrass fans. (apparently the only bluegrass fans in the 20's age bracket, based on the audiences we sat in, but I was born older I guess) Silver Dollar City was having its bluegrass festival, so we spent three days listening to good pickin'. The highlight of our trip was when we realized that the mandolin player in the group we were watching was none other than Dean Webb, Dean Darling to all of us here! As many of you know, he plays in a group called Missouri Boatride now. I know many of you have met people who were on the show, but this was our first time and let me tell you, it was Big! That's the word for it alright. It was surreal to talk with someone that is so often on our TV and that was there with Andy and Barn when our beloved show was being filmed. We talked with him about why the Darling boys never talked, about the Darling cabin set, and other things. He was very courteous and we took our picture with him. He is still playing some great music at 74. We feel just that much closer to mayberry now that we had the privilege of meeting someone who was a part of it. tornadoes and girlfriends
First, we are so thankful Paul and his family are safe. This spring we had to take cover only once for a storm and it was a scary time. We didn't suffer any damage but we felt helpless huddled down in our bathroom not knowing what was going to happen. I hope this season of storms is over now. Our favorite girlfriend of Andy's is Peggy. I think Ellie is awkward and Helen is jealous but Peggy is great. I could listen to her talk for hours. Too bad she wasn't on the show very long. There was also the Pizza Pie girl. I don't remember her name but she was curious to me. Peggy wins it hands down. Andy acting curious
So my husband and I have been watching through the Andy Griffith seasons (as usual) and we noticed something curious. When Andy took Peggy to that fancy restaurant, he "passed" on the escargot. However, when he was in Hollywood and went out with Darlene Mason, she asked him if he'd ever had escargot. He told her no but he'd "try anything once." So, he won't eat escargot with Peggy but he will with Darlene Mason? curious, curious Thel in Arkansas ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Lum and Abner, Pine Ridge
Alan had mentioned Pine Ridge here and on his podcast. I live in Arkansas which is where Lum and Abner - both the characters of the show and the men who played them where from. I enjoy listening to Lum and Abner, not quite as much as I like watching Andy of course. I work on a computer and listen to the show as I work. It is a great show to listen to on roadtrips too! Todays Pine Ridge Arkansas used to be Waters Arkansas. After the show made the town famous, Waters Arkansas changed it's name to Pine Ridge which was a fictitious name that Lum and Abner had used instead of the towns real name. The show was based on the town and people of Waters Arkansas. Chester Lauck's (Lum's) father owned a general store in Waters like the one depicted in the show. There is now a museum about the Lum and Abner show in Pine Ridge Arkansas. Pine Ridge Arkansas is East of Mena between Mena and Oden. Thelma Lou and Barney
We were thinking the other day of how many times someone tried to "steal" Thelma Lou from Barney. We thought of threeGomer, Opie, and that farmer we can't remember the name of. Thelma Lou in Little House on the Prairie
We were watching Little House on the Prairie the other night and noticed Thelma Lou in the "If I Should Wake Before I Die" episode. She was in the end of the episode and played the daughter of an elderly woman who faked her death in order to see her family again. It was neat to see her! Of course, we like her best in Barney's hip pocket. Barn & Thel in Arkansas (Timothy & Lindsey) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Andy actors on Bonanza
Frequently on the WBMUTBB digest, people write in about characters from Andy showing up on other TV shows. But I think this is probably a record, or at least ties for one. Last night my wife and I watched a Bonanza episode titled "The Trail Gang." On this episode of Bonanza, there are THREE actors who also appeared on Andy. Henry Wheeler - Who handyman who sprayed the Taylor's roses and with alterior motives tried to woo Aunt Bee (Edgar Buchanan) -Plays the cook on this bonanza episode Uncle Ollie - Andy's uncle who talks big about chasing outlaws with Andy until Andy calls his bluff and he piles the family in the car and leaves town (James Westerfield) -Plays sheriff Logan Fred Walker- Ellie Walker's Uncle and the drug store owner in the early days of Andy (Harry Antrim) -Plays Judge Armbruster I thought it was pretty neat that so many Andy characters were in one episode of Bonanza. I doubt there is another single episode of another show that has more than three Andy characters. Someone may know of one? It is always fun when a character from the greatest show of all shows up somewhere else to take you back to Mayberry:) Timothy and Lindsey in Arkansas. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
andy's smoking
Watched "Bookie Barber" episode last night and got me thinking. In this episode Andy is seen smoking for 2 seconds, taking a drag as he exits courthouse and then throwing the cigarette on the ground. In about 13 episodes we see Andy smoking briefly. Out of 8 seasons, that is a low number of episodes. I wonder why the producers decided to show Andy smoking in these few episodes? If he smoked all the time I would say it was part of the character, but it is so infrequent that it makes me wonder why it was put in. Seems that Andy's character would have either been a big smoker or not at all. Is there a purpose behind the producers choosing to show this occasionally?
