Money in the 1960's

2010-02-12 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List
Some examples of money in the 60's: In 1962 when I was a sophomore in high
school I set pins in a bowling alley. We were paid 10 cents for each game
we set pins for. I would set pins for league bowling and doing two lanes at
a time for two and half hours I could make $2.40 a night. Ice cream cones,
cokes, candy bars, and packages of gum were a nickel. Malts were 30 cents.
My mother was working as a waitress and got 65 cents an hour. When I
worked in a small grocery store canned vegetables were ten cans for a dollar
and hamburger was 29 cents a pound. There was a milk machine in the back of
our study hall in the high school. Small glass bottles of white milk cost a
penny while chocolate milk was two cents. When I graduated from high
school I went to work in a wood working factory operating a router and I
started out at $1.25 an hour. At that time my mother was renting a three
bedroom house for $35 a month. I started teaching in 1967 and was paid
$4200 a year and I received an extra $75 a year for coaching junior high
basketball.

The mayor's gone red

2010-02-12 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List
I've been watching 31 Days Of Oscar on TCM and noticing many of our TAGS family
members. Today, while watching "Pickup on South Street", Parley Baer plays an
uncredited communist from a spy ring living in NYC...he looks quite
sinisterfilm noir at it's best..Willis Bouchey (Mr. O'Malley) plays the
lead detective who is trying to stop the reds from sending microfilm with some
very important calculations about how to make an atomic bomb into the wrong
hands. Can anyone think of another time that one of the TAGS cast played a
very sinister or notorious character in a movie or TV show? I can't imagine
that Willis ever played a villain, we all know..."the bigger they are, the
nicer they are!"

*** WBMUTBB HQ NOTICE: Mr. Kessel and changes to the Digest ***

2010-02-12 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List

Friends,

One of our current WBMUTBB members is forwarding the Digest to Mr.
Kessel each day. Normally, I would not consider this to be an issue but
Tom has been sending...unkind e-mails to members of the Digest because
of his ability to read our daily digest.

First and sadly, I would like to ask members not to forward to Tom.
Whomever is doing so is helping Tom be able to send personal e-mails to
our members which they DO NOT want to receive.

Second and also sadly, I am going to attempt to hide everyones e-mail
address so that we can no longer see who the individual e-mails are
From. I'm not certain how this will work as we have never had a
situation that required me to do this and it will be somewhat harder for
our members to contact one another outside of the Digest itself.

Third and not something I want to do at all, should Tom e-mail ANY of
our members and behave in a way that causes them to contact me I will
post the details of what has happened (not here on the Digest) so that
hopefully those attempting to be kind to him will understand why I have
had to take the very distasteful action of removing Tom from the Digest
in the first place. If you are one of those sending our Digest to those
that are not members, please stop.

Thank those of you who have expressed your trust that I have done what
had to be done. It means a lot to me. I ask that all our members lift
Tom up in your prayers. I don't have ill-will toward him and I hope he
finds joy.

I am more sorry than I can express for this situation. I most certainly
hate to air any of this on the Digest but I have a responsibility to all
of you to keep those at bay that cause moulages among our wonderful
Mayberry community.

FIRST EPISODE

2010-02-12 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List

I am relatively new to this messed up bulletin board, but remember, Barney was
green when he first started.

In the opening of episode one, have you guys noticed that Andy is about to
pronounce the soon to be Pine's as "Man and Wi..." only to find out that,
after being interrupted by Opie, they haven't even gotten the ring ready or
said the "I do's" yet?

Juanita and Sarah

2010-02-12 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List
When Sarah's name comes up, I picture the small-town operator portrayed by
Cissy Spacek in the film "Raggedy Man." She was stationed there by the phone
company after her hubby was killed in WWII and was also on duty nearly 24/7.
The switchboard was in the foyer of the little house if I remember right.

As for Juanita, that name was popular for a time in non-hispanic families, I
believe due to some flamboyant films in the 40s. I figure she was a slightly
built young woman with a big heart, a bit naive about men and a hard worker.
She probably thought nothing of dating Barney inbetween his relationship
with Thelma Lou as she didn't take life too seriously. Would that more of
us could be like that!

Has anyone noticed how the writers changed Barney's personality in relation
to romance? One minute he's Mr. Bashful and then the next he often acts
like a real lothario; I like him in the middle of these extremes, like most
men are.

The Warner Archive (Warner Home Video's online manufactured-on-demand DVD-R

MISTER ROBERTS, it is not as good as the original, but as sequel's go, it's
worthy and fun.

PULVER has George Lindsey in a good cast that includes Robert Walker Jr., Burl
Ives, Walter Matthau, Jack Nicholson ("Opie Finds a Baby," "Aunt Bee the
Juror"), Larry Hagman, James Coco, Peter Marshall, Kay Medford and Tommy Sands.

Yes, in one of the early episodes Barney is very shy about walking a lady to
preachin'. Remember? but I don't remember her name. She is the actress that
also plays a house - hunter when Andy is going to sell his house, with Dabbs
Greer as the husband. Must say though, I kind of liked the bashful Barney but
he gets a little ridiculous later on.

Hi all,

Regarding the question below about money's value:

Current data is only available till 2008. In 2008, $50.00 from 1963
is worth

$351.57 using the Consumer Price Index
$281.55 using the GDP deflator
$419.74 using the value of consumer bundle
$392.25 using the unskilled wage
$726.53 using the nominal GDP per capita
$1,168.78 using the relative share of GDP

See for the nifty calculator that let me do this:

Goober says hey.

Does anyone know a close ratio of money from the 1960's to the
present. I noticed in some episode's Opie is thrilled to get a
nickel. In other episodes, like when he finds $50, Andy gives him
$10 which you would think would be like a $1000 ...Just curious

A couple nights ago I saw a few minutes of the old classic from 1947 - "I
Remember Mama" and one of the ladies looked mighty familiar. I wasn't sure
because of the way she was dressed, but when she walked that distinctive
walk, I knew for a fact it was our own Hubcaps Lesch!!
What a great actress and what a thrill to have had her on the show before
she became Grandma Walton! Wish she could have been in a lot more episodes!

Money & Mayberry Connection

According to http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm

$10.00 in 1960 had about the same buying power as $73.45 in 2010.

Annual inflation over this period was about 4.07%.

I go to this website frequently when watching TAGS.

The 1980's movie, UHF, with Wierd Al has a Mayberry Connection: Sue Ane
Langdon played Weird Al's aunt in the movie. I've seen it many times before,
but never made the connection til the other day when I saw the credits.

You picked an interesting week to ask that one: snow all over the south
including 3-4 inches here in Alabama! (So if it can snow like that here I'm
sure it wouldn't be unheard of in the Carolinas (which did get hit this week
too).

A Google search shows that not only does North Carolina occasionally
experience snow (36 inches in one day in 1983, in fact) but the state even has
a
few ski resorts in the mountains. So snow, more than a little dusting,
certainly wouldn't have been out of the question but perhaps hard to duplicate
on location in California.

sinister Mayberry Alums

2010-02-13 Thread Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board Mailing List
Andrea, the most sinister roles I can remember were played by Andy Griffith
himself. In 1972 Andy appeared as a con man in an episode of Hawaii-Five-O.
In the 1974 made for TV movie "Savages" he played a rich lawyer hunting a young
man who witnesses a shooting to eliminate him. In the 1986 TV movie "Under the
Influence" he layed a raging alcoholic you terrified a town and his own
family. One of his most famous roles was one of his first, as Lonesome Rhodes
in the 1957 movie "A Face in the Crowd". Lonesome can best be described and a
power hungry megalomaniac. It's a great movie and showed the true talent of
Andy Griffith as an actor.

Now, on the lighter side, like Ken I too remember when you could get many
things for a penny or a nickel. Mint Juleps and Mary Janes were two for a
penny at the corner market. A nickle could get you a one scoop ice cream cone
at the nearby High's Ice Cream store (I liked butter brickle). If we were ever
were lucky enough to find a dime we would go to the store and get a Double Cola
and a pack of baseball cards (5 in a pack). Double Cola was a soft drink
locally produced in my hometown of Roanoke Virginia. It wasn't that great but
at the time it was the only soft drink that came in 16 oz. bottles, while most
others were only in 10oz bottles, although Royal Crown did come in a 12oz size.
Too bad the Double Cola people never got a recipe for Boysenberry Smash.

Harry in Salem, VA

P.S. Did you ever pour your salted peanuts down into the full cola bottle??
It was gd!
