In my previous post, I indicated that the character of Barney obviously wasn't a smoker due to his inability to smoke a cigarette without coughing and wheezing (to comic effect). I did ask whether anyone knew if Don Knotts was a smoker in real life, as this would be the only logical explanation for the persistent bulge in Barney's shirt pocket, but no one has answered that question. So, does anyone know if Don was, indeed, a smoker? I only ask out of sheer curiosity. His smoking status either way would not affect my high admiration for the man!
