Awhile back I posted a message in response to Joe's concern about being depressed once he came to the end of season five, knowing that it was the end of Barney as a regular character. Well, Joe, I'm going to have to follow my own advice because I finished my season five set a couple days ago and admit that my spirits flagged a bit afterward. But it's so nice to know that I have the whole first five seasons sitting there on the shelf and that at any time I can pop in a DVD and enjoy Barney all over again!
I was disappointed to realize that Barney does not appear in the last two episodes. I can understand their reasoning in not including him in the last show, since they were introducing Jerry Van Dyke's character, but to leave Barney out of those episodes when they knew this was Don's last season with the show just doesn't seem right somehow. I have always wondered why they didn't write a special episode explaining Barney's departure from Mayberry. I think the end of season five would be easier to take if there were some sort of farewell to Barney and a tying up of loose ends. I'm not sure why, but those last two shows of season five seem to have a different feel to them--more like the color episodes than the B&W's. It's not just that Barney doesn't appear. I can't quite put my finger on it, but when I viewed them, I felt like I was already into season six. Anyone else have that reaction?
