Re: fish for breakfast

2013-06-11 Thread Dixon Hayes
Fish for breakfast isn't so unusual in a deep woods campout, which is probably
where Gomer got the idea. Apparently he thought Andy typically had fish for
breakfast at home as much as he had eggs, toast or those delicious Post cereals.

Fish For Breakfast

2013-06-09 Thread pdking77

My first mother-in-law was very much a country gal and looked forward to
having 'salt fish' for breakfast. The fish would come packed in large plastic
tubs and were - yup - packed in salt. She said it was only available in months
with an 'r' in it (January, February, March, April, September, etc). It was
fried with eggs and no matter how much you rinsed the fish, they were salty
enough to curl your toes! I could take it only in small amounts and
occasionally, but she and her husband eagerly looked forward to this morning
meal.

Fish For Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

2013-06-09 Thread Chuck Talley
When I was just a boy, my grandfather and dad would take my brother and
me to upper Canada for a week of fishing in the wilderness. It took us
two days to get there driving and two days back so just left five days
of fishing, fishing and more fishing. We would be on the lake at the
crack of dawn, catch our breakfast - fish - build a campfire and eat our
breakfast. Then we would fish for a few hours, build a campfire and eat
our fish for lunch. Then we would fish a few more hours, build a
campfire and eat our fish for supper and fish some more until dark. The
same routine for five days and then bring lots of frozen fish home to
eat for the next several months. Fish for breakfast is gd. I
don't think Andy and Opie ever went on that long a fishing trip,
especially to catch Carp for the museum. The Gollywobbler

The other day I recalled having fish for breakfast. In the northeast lox on
a bagel is a breakfast treat, especially served at a brunch!

Paul, Here's an interesting instance of someone eating fish for breakfast.

Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast'...Jesus came and took the bread
and gave it to them, and so with the fish. John 21:12, 13

Fish for breakfast

2013-06-08 Thread Sundale Preschool
While it is not a common breakfast meal here in the U.S., my British son-in-law
of 14 years, tells me kippers (herring) and eggs is a classic English
breakfast. I Googled “kippers and eggs” and he’s right as rain. Herring is, of
course, an ocean fish-and probably would not have been the kind Andy would
have prepared for breakfast.

Now that I think about it, a pan fried trout and scrambled eggs sounds really
good for breakfast.

Fish for breakfast? Sure! Grew up on a farm in Virginia back in the '40s
and many times we had fish for breakfast. Why not?? It is good, sweet,
nourishing, easily fixed, and if you get fillets there is no leftover to
contend
with!! My mother was especially good at fixing Whiting and I sure would
love to go back about 70 years to have another helping of italong with
her pan of cornbreadBatterbread we had for breakfast almost EVERY day
of the year!! Slice it open, put a slab of real homemade butter in it and
let it melt and soak in, and Yum Yum!!
So fish for breakfast? Sure!! And one last thing...we didn't eat breakfast,
lunch and dinner. That was a northern thang!
Southerners ate Breakfast, Dinner and Supper. So if I say y'all come for
dinner, and you show up at 5PM all the food will have been et a long time
ago!!

Fish grits for breakfast. A southern tradition! At least in my part of the
south. My mama would be more than satisfied to eat leftover fish from the night
before for breakfast.

Don't forget that Gomer once presented Aunt Bee with some freshly-caught trout
right at the breakfast table (much to her dismay). Gomer said something like,
I know how the sheriff likes his fish, so I got up special early to catch him
a mess for breakfast.

I must admit that I have never heard of anyone having fish for breakfast, and
I've been an amateur angler my whole life. I also have never seen anyone wear a
tie while fishing, except for Mayor Stoner.

In the episode Opie's Rival, Andy and Opie are first seen fishing. Then go
ashore to have a fish fry. After that they drive back into town and meet up
with Peggy. Andy makes a comment about Peggy being the the sharpest looking
nurse in Mayberry that morning, stating it was still morning.

I was wondering did Andy and Opie have a fish fry for breakfast? Don't knock
it till you have tried it I guess. :-)

When I first began staying at my wife's home place after we were married I
was pleasantly surprised one morning when we had pan fried fish for
breakfast. There is a small spring fed lake on their land and it is filled
with pan fish. My wife said her father always had fried fish for
breakfast. I have to admit it was very tasty ;especially when it was fried
in a cast iron frying pan like Andy used with Opie.
