WALLACE FORD
Tuesday morning I was watching Turner Classic Movies. They had a movie from 1932 on called "Beast of The City".It was an OK gangster movie, but one of the main players was Wallace Ford. I almost did not recognize him because he was so young. It was only his 4th movie. He had over 100 more appearances in the movies and television before 1964 when he played Roger Hanover on TAGS.His role as Roger Hanover was his next to last role.He played in "Patch of Blue" in 1965, and died the next year. Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man.1932 was the year before my Mama was born. Curious (non-Ford cars)
>>>As we all know, TAGS used Ford automobiles in the show, but now and then, we see a Chevy in town. Tonight while watching "The Merchant of Mayberry", near the end of the show, when Ben complains to Andy about a Stevens truck in town, when they show Ben, you see a '59 Chevy turning the corner behind him. They turn the shot back to Andy and Barney, then when they go back to Ben, that same '59 Chevy is coming up the same street. Then in the next shot of Ben, it looks like that same car is backing into a driveway in the background. Curious, curious.<<< Ron, good observation. Recently I was listening to Allan's podcast (well, three or four of them) where he played the interview Neil Brower did with Bruce Bilson at last year's Mayberry Days. As I recall, when Bruce was talking about using extras, he said they sometimes had an extra to use his or her own vehicle for a scene, and I think they received extra pay for that. This would explain the presence of non-Ford vehicles on the set. What I don't understand is why Howard Sprague drove a Chevy Impala instead of a Ford. Matlock's Ford
Hi Allan: Just thinking while waiting for lunch!! (Maybe Tuna sandwiches!!) I travel around a good bit as a consultant and I have spotted a gray four door Ford exactly like the one that Andy drove on Matlock. It sets rotting away in a lot and probably could be had for a reasonable price. It occurred to me that the folks at the Andy museum might want to obtain this vehicle, clean it up and put it on display there in Mt. Airy somewhere. Just a thought. It is probably not a unique car, but seems to be an exact replica (year, model, color, etc.) of the car used in the Matlock TV series. I don't think much would have to be done to it, although my guess is it is not in running condition. It just caught my eye as a fan of both Matlock and TAGS... My purpose for writing is to ask you to forward this e-mail to the powers that be at the Andy Griffith Museum, etc. Or send me an e-mail and I will send the note. If anyone is interested, I can take a picture and e-mail it along with checking on the condition of the car, if it is for sale, etc. The car is in Gladewater, Texas, in East Texas, about 120 miles east of Dallas. ***Did anyone notice who owned this car? Maybe Nellie or Mr. Schwump was the owner. The reason I noticed it so much is that quite a few of my friends in the 60's owned Ford Falcons because they were dependable, economical cars.*** Ah, something I always wondered myself. And we finally got our answer during the color years: I think it was the episode where Goober's girl, Flora, is working the pumps, but I believe it's none other than Jud (Burt Mustin) who owns that car. He's in line behind the wheel, waiting to fill up his economical little car. Which, now that I think of it, makes his appearance in the gas line even funnier since the good gas mileage meant he probably didn't need to fill up that often, and probably didn't need to be in line for gas that badly. Wallace Ford Burt Mustin Joe Hamilton and More
ill reveal tomorrow the name of the show buisness legend who did a cameo in Casablanca. ONce the name gets out, check out your dvd players some day and freeeze the scene. you tell me what you see. Ill bet my last dollar Warner Bros put him up to it. This is on par with who is Mr/Schawamp? i love a good mystery.but sadly we may never know the answer to both. And maybe thats for the best. Wallace Ford i can tell you was heartbroken Hollywood didnt come knocking to his door like they should had by time he passed on in 1966 espescially after his role in Patch of Blue.1965. ONe of his finest performances was on of all things an episode of one of my favorite tv series Father Knows Best. ITs one of the most fondly remembered episodes of that acclaimed seriee. You hear that Elinor Donahue? from 1954 the Christmas show with Wallace as Nick, mistaken as Santa Claus when the Andersons are stranded up in the woods in a wintry cabin. What a memorable episide. The series famous for its brilliant music ,its score scene for scene that still holds up today. Imagine a comedy series remembered for its musical score. The entire episodes not just the opening credits.ANd look at the TAGS players who guested on that show. Catch Wallace in Freaks 1932 . very talented man. Did i read Gritton Joe asking me if i knew Burt when he had happier times?Of course. In 1970-71 at 88 he was in grand health long before taking ill. BUt he stayed in harness til the very end. I have scores of letters of happier days before illness set in. He didnt become an actor til he was 65 His wife had just died when i came into his life. Old as he was he kept on writing til nearly the end then his niece told me the rest. What a chatterer too. he loved it when people remembered him. ANd he had plenty to say. He told me they retook several times the tomatoe scene in that classic episode with Barney and him and Hal Smith cracking up in between each take. Someone said Joe Hamilton and Murray Hamilton look and sound alike?YOu know the saying. no two people see the same thing. I only speak for myself. No way do they look or sound alike. Outside of same last name i cant see a blessed thing they had in common. Yes there is. THey were superb performers. Murray performed til cancer set in and robbed us of him. JAws was his best remembered role but catch him in that classic episode from Twilight Zone, One For the Angels. The last thing id do is boast about myself but in case, im happy to. Joe mentioned Dick Ryan. I think its safe to say this actor was otherwise so forgotton by 1967 when he did a 5 second scene. it was a godsend. im glad i caught up to him but sad im most likely bthe only fan out there anywhere who picked up on that episode, spotted him and sent off a fan letter. there were literally hundreds and hundreds of character actors ( all died by 2008) back in the 30s and 40s in Dicks heyday. he was one of many reliable standbys. a jack of all trades. this was his livlihood performing as supporting player in films. He was like so many others, type casted which is fine but by the 50s Hollywood was changing. .He wasnt seen as much in films no fault of his own but now in television but never as top rated character-supporting actor. He was a reliable thesbian . But his parts grew much smaller til finally we last see him in such an insignicant scene from Dont Miss a Good Bet..But leave it to Andy Griffith to spot him and others to do a bit part. Its vital. its music to their vears to be wanted.Oh i forgot on Wallace Ford. His line Boy. no not really. his character Roger was bluffing and threatening Andy Taylor looking down to him , belittling this kid. He knows Andys onto him . Liston to the sharp edge of BOY and better yet I just might have a hand in those penunias yet. ANDY with the accent on ANDY shows the powerful scene . TAGS was chartering new waters by 1964 exploring with success new avenues.I want to close this out. Gritton Joe just e mailed me. Finally then Ill shut up.. Im sorry Im too lazy to look this up and the name escapes me but Ken and Joe and masny of you know the name. In 1974 Frances Bavier told me one more performer not a regular from the show that she said was very dear to her. he would sit between takes laugh up a storm tell stories snd jokes and break everybody up. when she told me (She forgot his name) i got her point. his character role was anything but that of a Cut Up.In Barney Holds a Summit. this episode in my opinon only is the best ever post Don Knotts guest episode and a gem all by itself (Look at the power of that dramatic scene of Andy almost screaming his head off at Barney back home handing him the phone) and the splendid actor playing the head of the Russian Delegation (remember him saying PICKLES) he died just a year or so ago i read in one of my movie magazines. Everyone on the set simply adored him FRances told me. He was the opposite of his grim character. Time to close shop. God Bless from Col.Tim and I. Tom Kessel
Wallace Ford
Mr. Kessel, you mentioned Wallace Ford as being in Aunt Bee's Romance. My favorite movie is Harvey with Jimmy Stewart. I believe the taxi driver in one of the scenes near the end was played by Wallace Ford. (They got no faith in me or my buggy.) Anyway, I never would have gotten the connection. Is it the same Wallace Ford? It's like Mrs. Poultice and Big Maude. I just can't seem to see the same actor/actress in these two roles. To me that's a sign of being remarkably talented. If a character actor is not readily recognized from one role to another, then they must be putting on the personality of the particular character they are playing. Which, I guess would mean that they would not be typecast, or whatever the term is. I'll have to go back and watch Harvey and Aunt Bee's Romance again. It will be a pleasant chore. This time I will watch Wallace Ford carefully and see if I can see him in the other role. I hope I am not incredibly dense to not recognize the actors in other roles. I am just so taken up with what I'm watching that I don't notice the details. I was really disappointed when someone on this digest pointed out that the scenery as seen through the courthouse door was painted. In my mind, Mayberry was exactly as it was presented to be and it's hard to think about it being filmed in different settings and sequences. It amazes me that Andy and Barney can be talking outside the courthouse, then walk in the door still talking without a missed beat. (I'm assuming that the outside shots and inside shots were filmed in different places and sequences.) The continuity amazes me. Anyway, I put the details out of my mind and just enjoy being in Mayberry. I try not to notice the painted scenes or cardboard squad car. I'm happy that a lot of you know the intricate details of putting together a television show and all about the 40 acres and I have learned a lot. But I just want to enjoy the end product. However, keep the information and discussions coming. It's all very interesting. Kind behind the eyes PS Was calling Andy boy an insult? I just might have a hand in those petunias yet, boy. It seems he put a little emphasis on the word boy. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

This episode originally aired on September 27, 1965. The Ford Mustang made its debut off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on March 9, 1964 and was first seen by many at the World's Fair in New York on April 17, 1964. (Incidentally, 'The Return of Malcolm Merriweather' first aired on April 20, 1964). All three networks showed the Mustang on April 19, 1964. RE: GLENN FORD-THERE IS A TAGS Connection
To reply to all the Glenn Ford posts, yes there really was a movie titled, G-Men. It was made in 1935. Glenn Ford was not in the movie, James Cagney was the lead actor. However, there is a Mayberry connection and maybe this had something to do with why the writers of that script mentioned it. Mary Treen who appeared in three TAGS episodes had a bit part in G-Men. Mary, who passed away in 1989 was in, - Those Gossipin' Men (1961) as Clara Lindsey - Ellie for Council (1960) as Sam's Wife - The New Housekeeper (1960) as Rose Mary also went on to appear in one episode of Gomer Pyle and once in Happy Days.
