Having A Ball
An ellipseoid? An oblate spheroid? Wow, Orville, your education was worth every penny. Nobody mentioned miniature golf. This was in the episode where Goober took out cousin Gloria. Keith got SKEE BALL, which is what I was hinting out when I said someone played it out of town with a relative, and also MINIATURE GOLF, which most folks would agree is distinctly different from regular old golf. I had forgotten about the miniature golf reference. Sorry Ken, but ogling girls with one's eyeballs is not exactly a game. If I counted that I'd have to count every game that required eyesight. And I've never heard of the sport of cannon shooting, but you may be on the right track. Lastly, Malcolm Merriweather never mentions the sport of cricket in any episode. There is, however, still one more game in that family (it involves bases) that hasn't been mentioned. Paul Mulik ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Good catch Ken, SOFTBALL is another one I was thinking of. I hadn't thought of the carnival game, but you're right it was probably a variation of the knock the milk bottles over game; however no one mentions the game, so I had not counted it. Regarding footballs, the official rules of the NFL call a football a ball, and that's good enough for me. I never specified that the balls had to be spherical, after all. I'm thinking of still three more games or sports mentioned on TAGS which require a ball. Here are some more hints: one is a sport that men (and less often, women) have participated in for centuries, right up to the present day. Two hundred years ago a ball was always required for this sport, but nowadays few participants in this sport use balls. That may not be very helpful but I don't want to just give away the answer. More hints: one is sort of a variation of baseball (not cricket) and one was played by a Mayberryite with a relative, out of town. I remember golf, tennis, basketball, football, baseball and polo. Polo sticks out in my mind the most because I love the tune that Aunt Bee and Clara sing! Sandy ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Excellent work so far. In case anybody is a day or two behind, the challenge is to name a game or sport mentioned on TAGS that requires a ball. Note that I said mentioned, not seen. So far the following correct answers have been given. I'll give episode titles for the sake of completeness: GOLF (The Clubmen, Opie Steps up in Class, Bargain Day (golf ball Gomer finds in the freezer)) BASEBALL (many episodes, starting in the very first episode, The New Housekeeper) FOOTBALL (Opie's Piano Lesson, Andy and Opie's Pal, Goober Goes to an Auto Show et al) TENNIS (The New Housekeeper, Helen the Authoress, Opie's Steps up in Class, etc.) BASKETBALL (Opie and the Carnival et al) BOWLING (Howard the Bowler, Goober and the Art of Love et al) PING PONG / TABLE TENNIS (The Inspector) POOL (The Church Benefactors) (...and the losers buy the beer!) POLO (Helen the Authoress, A Singer in Town) VOLLEYBALL (Class Reunion) Margaret mentioned the pinball machine at the Tip Top Cafe (seen in Barney Mends a Broken Heart) and while nobody in any episode as far as I can remember says the word pinball, she gets honorable mention because in a previous quiz I challenged everyone to identify where a pinball machine can be seen, and nobody got it until now. Larry mentioned the SHOT PUT and I hadn't considered that one, but it's definitely a type of ball; however I can't think of an episode that mentions it — somebody help me out with this one. I suppose MARBLES could also be considered balls but I can't at this moment think of which episode they might have been mentioned in either. BTW we don't know what sport the Mayberry Bears played, or even if they were a sports team at all. They're mentioned only once, when Andy checks the newspaper to see how the Mayberry Bears made out. We are never told the name of Mayberry Union High's sports teams, but the yearbook is called the Cutlass, which suggests that the high school team is probably called the Pirates or the Buccaneers or something along those lines, and it is extremely unlikely that Mayberry had more than one high school. I'm thinking of four more that haven't been named yet. Keep those buckets on your heads. Here's a hint: one is a game that is similar to bowling.
