Emmitt says Judy, Judy, Judy
I was watching Season 1 of Mayberry RFD and in an episode, Emmitt, convinced he has the age appeal of Cary Grant, looks in the mirror and say ... Judy, Judy, Judy! Judy, Judy, Judy
Hi Folks, I was reading my AAA magazine and the headline Judy, Judy, Judy, caught my attention. Actually, it was an article about a festival to Judy Garland on June 8th 9th in her birthplace in Minnesota (the name of the town is escaping me now). Anyway, hardly a day goes by when I don't find a bit of Mayberry in it somewhere. And speaking of Mayberry, I'm leaving Wednesday Ohio on and flying to Florida to see my folks and my sister. I am driving back with my parents around June 17th. We are taking a trip through Mt. Airy, N.C. on the way back. I can't wait ... I can taste the pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch now. It's only my second visit and 12 years since I've been there last time. But my dad loves the show as much as I do and I'm looking forward to sharing it with him. I had my photo album out this week and had fun looking at the photos of Mayberry Days and remembering the good time I had there with my friends in 1995. However, my parents don't have the internet and I will have very little access to check my email account except when visiting my sister and she lives 100 miles from them so I am going to temporarily unsubscribe from this list. I hope you all have a wonderful summer and I'll write about my trip when I get back and resubscribe. Cathy a.k.a. Judy Judy Judy lets talk
Has anyone noticed just when Andy lost his southern accent? It seems to me that when it left, so did the soft spoken, gentle sheriff. Andy, in the early black and whites, used to find ways to build Barney up, especially when he had messed things up. When the accent left the show, so did compassion and patience - even Barney's began to change. At the end of Barney's presence on the show, Andg and Barn argued often. Do you think that the writers for the show thought that this change was more desirable to the viewing audience? I believe that the writers for the first shows were not the same ones that wrote for the later ones. Too bad. I wonder if this had anything to do with Don Knotts leaving the show. JudyJudyJudy Its always nice to get a new person in the neighborhood that we can educate/discuss some of the basics that over the years I think we've come to consensus on. Here we go. 1) Andy lost his southern accent after season 1, a deliberate change by the producers since it was evident that he could play the straight role with the comedic genius of Don Knotts, Howard McNear (Floyd) and others to play off of. 2) If you think compassion and patience left...well, that's just like your vote, its your business, but I'm voting 'that is not accurate' Mayberry stayed a compassionate place, and if Andy lost his patience occasionally, that was just part of the script for that particular episode--the actor in the man. 3) There was no writer decision to make Andy and Barney argue more. That is a generalization that some perhaps perceive, buts its how inaccurate rumors get started here in Mayberry. (Did you hear that Barney Fife Shot himself??) 4) Don Knotts left after 5 season because Andy planned on ending the show. Don signed a multiple-movie deal, and then the Network convinced Andy to come back for another season (tuned out to be 3). No hard feelings, no shift in stories, just business. 5) There were 30 some different writers, and yes the last seasons were not as memorable as the early years but, in my opinion, it had nothing to do with arguing, or patience or losing accents.
