Matlock

On Matlock this morning one of the characters was called a kleptomaniac.
When Ben was told this, he said, "I once knew a fellow who pronounced it
klepterminnerac.

Gee, I wonder who that fellow was.

It is great to see so many Mayberry folks on Matlock this week. But
surely, one is missing. I think they should have had Ernest T. Bass make
an appearance. He could have thrown one of his bestest rocks through the
courthouse window whilst Ben was at a trial.

Mayberry Meets Matlock

2016-02-26 Thread Allan Newsome
Gary and Dan were talking about Matlock and Mayberry. I did a podcast
episode about two years ago about some of connections between the two.

Mayberry fan, Brian Saul, was kind enough to help me get some clips from
Matlock that fans of The Andy Griffith Show are sure to love.

First up, did you know that Ben Matlock once knew a fellow that
mispronounced kleptomaniacs by saying "kleptominerac?" That's right! On
the Matlock episode "The Good Boy" that's exactly what we hear.

Next, I'm sure you remember when Barney was showing Andy all he knew about
Judo in TAGS episode "Barney's Uniform." Well, Don Knotts' character Les
Calhoun demonstrated his karate skills to Ben Matlock in the episode "The
Fighter."

Oh...and there's so much more. Sit back and enjoy this trip as Mayberry
meets Matlock.

Not only lines but a whole segment. This is where Ben's neighbor (Don
Knotts) tries to show him a karate move. It's the same one from TAGS where
Barney tried it on Andy. Turned out the same on Matlock. Don's line:
"Wanna let me up Benj".

2014-06-04 Thread Victor Friskey
Ten things I've learned from watching Matlock every day.

1. An investigator can get hired on any job regardless of experience
2. You can break into any house or building with a credit card
3. When two people get into an argument one of them will die
4. It takes several attempts to start a car, but only if the driver is being
chased
5. an investigator can watch a shady deal go down from 30 feet just by sitting
in his car
6. No matter how many miles or how many turns a suspect makes in his car he
will never
    notice he is being followed
7. Several bullets can be shot into a speeding car but it only takes one to
blow up a helicopter
8. no matter how busy a bar room is there is always an empty stool right in
front of the bartender
9. a man will show no pain when getting slugged several times but will wince
when someone tries to clean the wound
10. When using a computer a person can type at lightning speed and never need
to hit the space bar

Vic - I'm impressed by your ability to watch all the Matlock episodes! I too
was bothered by the "formula" scripts and gave up watching after seeing the
same thing again and again and will admit I have watched very few Matlock
episodes completely. This bring a couple things to mind...

I enjoy the TAGS color eps, but will also admit, not as much as the B&W. Mainly
because I felt the quality and creativity of the writers was not at the caliber
of the Seasons 1-5 writers (e.g. Harvey Bullock and Everett Greenbaum). You had
essentially the same characters and the same actors portraying them*, but the
material they had to work just was not as funny to me.

I think these early writers also became "rising stars", as Don Knotts was when
he signed the movie deal with Universal. I can't blame them for moving up, but
have always wondered if they had kept writing in seasons 6-8 whether they would
have been able to create the same classic episodes or characters (Ernest T,
Malcom Merriweather, The Darlings, Dave Browne) as the first five seasons.

*I always credit Paul Mulick (and agree) with the idea (could be a theory) that
material was written for Barney Fife/Don Knotts in Season 6 ended up with
Warren Ferguson/Jack Burns. I feel they were both capable actors (and at least
one can spell capable) but to me, it boiled down the writers. Had they created
original material for Jack Burns, who knows what might have happened? It would
have been impossible to create the same on-screen chemistry that Andy/Barney
had because Andy/Don were such good friends, but trying to replicate success
using different people is nearly impossible. Especially when you are going more
by the heart (Season 1-5) and less by the book.

Too many "what if's". I'm just glad to have TAGS, along with the friends I've
made because of it.

Matlock vs. TAGS

2013-11-03 Thread Victor Friskey
I guess I've seen every Matlock episode more than once. some three or four
times. But it's
obvious the writers for that show couldn't hold a candle to the TAGS writers.
Almost every
has the same plot...Two people get into an argument, one of tem is found dead,
the other
is found with the murder weapon. Matlock doesn't want to take the case, but
then he does.
An investigation follows by Matlock, one of his daughters and his investigator.
there is a bit
comedy, and music. Matlock likes hotdogs instead of leg of lamb or roast beef.
then there is
court room scene and more investigating, about 40 minutes into the show matlock
unwittingly
uncovers the smoking gun. more court room scenes and maybe a recess. The last
10 minutes
you know who ever is on the witness stand is going to be the killer. I enjoy
seeing the tags
actors and actresses and especially Helen Crump as a judge. But if it weren't
for Andy Griffith
in the starring role I'm not so sure that show would have been nearly as
successful...Even though
the episodes were written in "cookie cutter' fashion I'll keep watching. It's
on 10 times Monday thru
Friday and four times on the weekend...

Andy Griffith/Matlock

2010-08-09 Thread SHARON SMITH

In watching Matlock since it started airing on Hallmark, it made me curious
about how actors would come and go from that show with no explanation regarding
their character. I looked around on the internet and it appears that Andy
Griffith usually didn't get along with his co-workers. He has always seemed to
me to distance himself from all the reunion specials and various honors paid to
The Andy Griffith Show. I always wondered how he could have told Don Knotts he
was ending the show and then D.K. made other plans, then A.G. changed his mind
- what about his supposed friendship with D.K. I've wondered before why he
doesn't seem to get along with most people and wondered if anyone had any input
into that. No disrespect is intended here. I am honestly curious and don't
know much about him. Only that I love The Andy Griffith Show as well as
Matlock.

Three's Company was not after Matlock. Three's Company ended in 1984 and

Bob,

I will venture a guess and say that Don Knotts wore the hat to cover up his
balding head. I do remember when he was on Three's Company, which was after
Matlock, he wore a toupee.

Andy on Matlock

2009-03-19 Thread m white

TAGS fans,

I'm enjoying watching the second season of Matlock. It's fun to catch the
little TAGS phrases and the occasional TAGS guest star, but the more I watch
Ben Matlock the less he seems like Andy Taylor. I guess that's the actor of
the man!

Matlock season 2

2009-02-16 Thread m white
TAGS fans,

I used part of my tax refund to purchase Matlock, season 2. As we were
watching the first episode, one of my sons said, "I know that's the same guy
that plays Andy Taylor, but I can't even think of them as being the same
person."

To which, of course, I replied, "That's the actor of the man." I have to
admit, that I feel the same way. Although, there was one moment where Ben
grimaced at something and, for just a moment, he looked just like Andy Taylor
again to me. I don't normally think of AT as being a particularly grimacing
fellow, so I'm not sure why that one moment reminded me more of Andy than
others, but it did.

Matlock/TAGS

2007-06-22 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)

Harvey Bullock, our recently departed TAGS writer of classic episodes
such a Opie the Birdman and The Haunted House also played (acted) as a
Judge on Matlock. You'll have to look up his picture to recognize him,
of course, since he did not appear on camera on our favorite show.

Alrlene Golonka, who played Millie (Howard's girlfriend last season)
also appeared on Matlock.

Neal Bentley tried to get on, but you know how high-priced lawyers like
Ben feel about slimy slip-and-fall ambulance-chasing lawyers like Neal.

Thanks Paul; I figured you'd have the answer I was looking for; now I need

Matlock, seems to me that Everett Greenbaum once portrayed a judge around
the same time he was doing auto ads for TV; can't recall the maker though.

I remember Betty Lynn (Lovely Thelma Lou) playing one of Ben's secretaries
early on in the series and Jack Dodson (Howard Sprague) playing one of Ben's
clients accused of killing the leader of a cult that had brain washed his son.
I wish they could have had an episode with Mr Shwump sitting in the jury box.
