On the episode Bargain Day Foley has a sign in his door advertising Picnics 29 cents. ?Any idea what that would mean? On the episode Bargain Day Foley has a sign in his door advertising Picnics 29 cents. ?Any idea what that would mean? Sam, that would refer to picnic hams, which are actually made from shoulder meat. So I'm assuming the sign really means Picnic hams, 29 cents per pound. I think they are normally cheaper than a true ham, which comes from the back of the hog. Picnics 29 cents. They are cuts of pork. There's Roast Picnic, Butt Picnic, etc. It's not used much anymore but in its day they were a favorite selling point in meat markets. Sam, when a grocery store advertises Picnics, at 29 cents a pound, they are speaking of Picnic Hams. The whole time I was growing up I was never sure why they were called Picnic Hams, because we sure never went on any picnic when we ate them.But I guess some people did.Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man.You could have some of that picnic ham with some of my eggs for breakfast tomorrow morning. Every time they show the front of the grocery store there is a sign for Picnics and gives their price. What is a picnic? Paul answered this one first, but I found something of interest at http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-picnic-ham.htm where it said a picnic ham was a major component of a Boiled Dinner. Looks Foley's Market is the source for at least one of ingredients when the Fire Department has a Boiled Dinner and cribbage. I'm not real sure but I think picnic is a way some ham is cured.
