Pets names.....and Barney in the army
First, to those folks who wrote in with all those TAGS names for their pets - thanks for sharing that - especially Ben from West Virginia. Really clever and fun to read. As far as Barney being a WWII veteran - I'm pretty sure during "Quiet Sam" in Season 1, they talked about serving in the Army during the Korean War - which definitely would fit the timeline for graduating in 1945. I've named many pets and other animals for TAGS characters over the years. I don't think it's odd (People sure are odd)it's Therapetic. Possibly a Compelsion Complex (Listen, you find Compelsion nuts all over). I dunno... Newton the cat (Newton Monroe) Jubal the beagle (Jubal Foster...Jbal...Jubal) Leonard the Rooster (Leonard Blush..he's always crowing) Jack the Black Lab (Black Jack Pershing, allegedly rode in Barney's sidecar across the Marne River during the battle of Chateau-Thierryin WWI, driven by Corporal Nate Jackson A.E.F.) Currently I have 2 male cat brothers Rafe (Rafe Hollister) and Ernie (Ernest T Bass) I also have names for wildlife and neighbors pets I see regularly around my mountain Hoadie the Racoon (Hoadie Snitch, seems like he's always trying to get away with something...very sneaky about getting into the trash and birdfeeders) Lucius, the Husky Dog (General Lucius Pyle, potentially related to Gomer; if one Pyle can make it, another'n can) A little wren lives in my wren house named Birdie Blush (Gomers fishing buddy) Virgil the Racoon, clumsy and he's always getting into some kinda fix. Got stuck in the gutter elbow last Halloween trying to get to the birdfeeders (Cousin Virgil) Lucy the doe deer (Lucy Matthews) Juanita the doe deer (Juanita Beasley) Lily the doe deer (Lilly Becker, Quiet Sam Becker's wife) Fletch the Bear (Fletch Roberts/Dillbeck) Hogette the big sow Bear who visits with her cubs regularly (Hogette Winslow) Nat the Goat (Uncle Nat, uncle to Otis) A friends goat with an outstanding beard Grovely the squirrel, loves jumping off the roof onto the birdfeeders (Grovely Barch, spirit of the air) Idelle the doe deer (Idelle Bushy, Dud Wash's former sweetheart; and he ain't lost it all for her yet!) I was trying to figure in my head if that’s a little nutty or it’s kinda cute. Then it dawned on me our puppy is named Lucy. But we named her Lucy because our loved pet Lulu had passed and we wanted to have part of her name in the puppy’s name. Just the same it is a Mayberry character name. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had a show pig I named Thelma Lou. I was only casually familiar with the show back then and probably could not have identified OUR Thelma Lou in a police lineup, but I thought the name was so hickish--a far cry (little did I realize) from the very lady-like Thelma Lou as portrayed by Betty Lynn. On the topic of Opie's pets: in "The Rumor," Opie mentions his pet lizard (explaining that he put it out, so that can't be why Aunt Bee is upset). Presumably this is the same lizard as is mentioned in "The New Housekeeper." pets and un-seen scenes
Also Mr Frisby gave his Rooster Beau to Opie. I'll bet Andy made Opie give it back to him, along with the mustache cup. There are some un-seen scenes that are so hilarious hearing about, I wonder if they'd be as fun to watch. However, I'd be willing to see Otis punching Floyd in the nose. Lamar Tuttle punching Otis, Goober punching Gilley, and for sure whoever punched Betty Ann. Come to think of it, somehow we never did get to see actually fists flying - just the sound of a smack and Barney and Andy's shocked expressions! Kirk, Opie had a dog named Gulliver and a bird named Dickey in the first episode, "The New Housekeeper". You see the bird in that episode but the only mention of Gulliver is when Opie is saying his prayers. H. makes ya wonder where those two pets went and ran off to. We know he loves dogs on the episode of Dogs, dogs, dogs and he had taken care of winkin,(or was it lincoln) blinkin', and nod, as well as, his imaginary horse Blackey. I wonder what kind of humorous additive that would have made to the show. Maybe it would have just been a big additional cost when it comes to training, feeding and caring for the pet. Just a curious thought because Goober had a dog on one episode and we all remember Blue and Sigh Hutchin's Jimmy. Any thoughts? Don't forget his bird, Dickie, seen only in the first episode. In that same episode, he also mentions a dog (Gulliver), a lizard (Oscar), and a white mouse. My son and his fiancé called me a month ago and we so excited. They said "Dad, we've got something to tell you". As usual, I expected something bad. But the went on to tell me they rescued a small cat, and have named it Floyd, in honor of our cat shaving barber! Hey All With all this talk about pets being named after characters on the show, I thought I would add that even I have no pets named after any of them, I did name my daughter Taylor because of the Taylor's. Everybody thought I was crazy, but I couldn't help it. I tried to name her after some of the ladies on the show but her daddy wanted her middle name to be Angel, and none of the ladies names fit, so Taylor Angel she became. Merry CHRISTmas to all here. I had an orange tabby cat, Opie. He joined my household when he was six weeks old, and he was euthanized last year on October 29, left me after 19 1/2 years. I don't have any pets named after a Mayberry character, but I do have a niece I nicknamed Otis. When Becky (her real name :) was first learning to walk, I jokingly said that she walked crooked just like Otis from the Andy Griffith Show did. She is nearly 18 years old now and I still call her Otis. I work part time at our local school so when I see my niece there, I make sure to call her Becky. Our chapter has cats named Malcolm and Sarah and a chow-chow mix named Sam; we used to have a bassett hound named Otis and a duck named Hazel, but they died. I have 4 dogs and 5 cats, but I am ashamed to admit none named after Mayberry characters. (I should have named my poodle mix Ernest T.
