Re: the Oscars

2013-03-05 Thread Gretchen Offord [SGLC]

I, too, was disappointed with this year's Academy Awards show, in that the
producers decided to 'go after' the
younger crowd, thus bringing in a popular (it is believed) comic to host the
show.

And the omission of several persons from the In Memoriam segment was a
travesty, yet those omissions seem
to happen every year.

I
was expecting much of what I heard, and immediately went to the Oscars
website and left a comment about it. It is when we speak up for
things that those in charge can make changes for the better of all.

The Academy Awards have been the classy elegant awards show over its duration,
something I've seen
true in the times I've watched it over the past 45 years. Even when Bob Hope
hosted, though his comments were
often double entendres, it was still classy and elegant.

What is sad
is the presumed preference for off color, grade school, even bathroom humor
thus the promoting such
comedy as entertaining. Entertainment can be clean to be enjoyable.

It would seem that the producers brought in numerous A list award winners,
including Barbra to sing, in order
to compensate for the host's rather inane comments.

Those producers must remember several things: the academy is mostly older folks
not young people, excessive
focus on apparel demeans the elegance of the show, young people can find value
in something that is
different if given the opportunity, and though 'family guy' has a large
following it doesn't represent the majority
of viewers.

Last year's Grammy awards (a show typically off color) did honor Whitney, her
sudden death being a tragedy in
that recovery didn't help her, and her loved ones felt that grief more so as
they wondered if they could have done more
to save her. Perhaps she
was a warning to those in that industry that life is short, treat it kindly or
it will be gone.
(Apparently addiction was a genetic factor for her so her ability to overcome
it was difficult).

The world has changed much, and entertainment is most reflective of it, 'art
imitating life' or 'life imitating art'?
This year as last movies were recognized that were based on actual persons or
events, which is encouraging rather
than movies about fluff. Ron Howard's upcoming movie 'Rush' should be an
excellent one based upon the information
he's released about it via his twitter account.

Don Knotts remembered on the Oscars

2007-02-26 Thread Hinesley Tim
I don't watch much of the Oscars but was lucky to catch the clips of the
actors, directors, etc. who had passed in the past year. Don Knotts was
in the clip. As much as I miss him I feel VERY lucky to have the DVD's
to watch. He was the best.

The Oscars and Our Deputy

2006-03-06 Thread Hinesley, Tim
The question was asked...

Did I miss it? During the Academy Awards program I watched all the names
of the fine talents that left us this past year, and I didn't see Dennis
Weaver, Darren McGavin or Don Knotts.

The website for the Oscars memorialized all actors and actresses who
died in 2005. Our beloved deputy will be recognized next year.
